NADRA Rocks Nashville, 2017 Recap

Acclaimed deck builders and industry enthusiasts from around the world traveled to Nashville, TN for the Remodeling show, DeckExpo and JLC Live (RDJ) at the end of last month. NADRA held several events while in Nashville. Below is a recap from each exciting event.

NADRA CPAC Meeting: 10/25/17

NADRA’s Consumer Product Awareness Charter Committee met on Wednesday morning prior to the golf tournament in Nashville. The CPAC Committee works to develop and implement consumer friendly labeling programs for outdoor living products. The committee presented details to a room full of NADRA Manufacturer members regarding its mission and accomplishments over the last 5 years.

The overall intent of this program is to provide the consumer with a simple, straightforward labeling program to assist in their product selection.
A recognized label will accompany easy to understand product performance measurements to educate consumers so they can make more knowledgeable product selections.

This meeting was a great opportunity to discuss CPAC with a large audience of mfrs. Many misconceptions about the CPAC program were addressed. I hope everyone heard how CPAC makes sense and helps everyone improve sales, reduces friction costs and elevates the entire industry. ” says Committee Chair, Andrew Clements

The committee continues to work diligently; taking input from a range of supportive sources to drive the program to completion. You can review the slides on the presentation below from the annual meeting. For more information about CPAC and how you can get involved, please contact NADRA.

This was a great way to introduce our builder members to NADRA’s exhibiting members at the show. We plan to expand on this idea even more next year.

Annual Awards Dinner: 10/26/17

NADRA members and industry friends filled up the second level of Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville in Nashville, TN… Everyone climbed the piano staircase to the second level to be greeted with custom lanyards and a cold Corona or frozen Margarita.

The night was made possible by NADRA member sponsors.

NADRA Platinum Sponsor, Bob Heidenreich – The Deck Store, spoke to the crowd for a moment. He chose a quote from Theodore Roosevelt.

Every man owes a part of his time and money to the business or industry in which he is engaged. No man has a moral right to withhold his support from an organization that is striving to improve conditions within his sphere.” Theodore Roosevelt

Thank you, Bob!

NADRA Members in Minnesota Build Deck for a Soldier®

DECEMBER 6TH, 2017   UPDATE

The MN D4S project is ready to rumble.

Props need to go out to the Brawlers from Crossroads Remodeling for TCB on the existing dilapidated deck/porch that was there.  I brought lunch to give them some afternoon energy and they were raking up the last shards of wood, not quite sure how they did all that in 4 hours.

Craig and Craig (no joke) from GoliathTech got the build started installing their Helical footings with a balmy -2 windchill and snow on the ground.  Although with a fresh layer of ice out on the roads I think it took them way longer to drive there than it did to actually set the footings.

It took Mark from Infinite Decks about 2 minutes on the site to sell me on his curves.  We decided if we are going to do this thing it lets do it right, big and nice curves.  Check out his awesome renderings of the masterpiece we are about to create.

Looks like Santa Claus from the Deck Store in Apple Valley is going to give us an early Christmas present by donating all the green for the project.  Thanks Bob-we really appreciate your support!

Framing starts next week with the team from Deck and Basement and Jigsaw Builders-with a projected high of 15 on Tuesday they better be working fast to keep themselves warm…

November 21st, 2017   UPDATE

Just a quick update as this Thanksgiving week winds down.  One of the things that we should all be thankful about are the men and women who keep our great country safe.  Please be sure to say a Thanksgiving prayer for all of our armed forces both home and abroad.

The Minnesota region has begun it’s Deck for a Soldier® project on a Veterans home.  They have torn down the old deck and are getting ready to begin the build once permits are in order.  They may still need a pledge of pressure treated lumber for the framing, so if you can help please click on this link  or contact myself or Pat Noonan.  We are also looking someone to pledge a plaque that would hang on or near this deck to acknowledge the NADRA Deck for a Soldier® program for donating the deck.  Again, please click on the provided link or contact one of us.

The Northeastern region is currently drawing up the plans and will get the permit paperwork submitted in the near future.  They are hoping to begin their build in January or February.  Once this project gets closer we will be looking for pledges for this project as well.

I hope that you all are able to spend quality time with friends and family over the Thanksgiving holiday.  Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Best Wishes,

Bruce Verblaauw – NADRA National Deck for a Soldier® Committee Chair

Day 1: Tear Down:

NADRA Members, Crossroads Remodeling headed to the site for day 1 of the Deck For a Soldier® Transitional Housing project in Minneapolis. Rick and his team has a huge heart for this program.

Thank you NADRA, Pat Noonan and the other contributors for such an honorable program.” – Rick Wooton – Owner, Crossroads Remodeling

 November 15th, 2017 UPDATE:

NADRA Members begin building a deck for Minnesota Alliance Council for Veterans (MACV)
NADRA members in MN got together to plan this years Deck for a Soldier® build. They chose MACV as their recipient. This worthy organization runs multiple transitional living homes for Veterans in crisis to help them get back on their feet and back into their own independent housing.  One of their homes has an old deck that has been condemned by the City of Minneapolis and is literally falling apart.
Pat Noonan, Deck and Basement Company is leading the project with the support of many local members. Pat writes to the crews just this morning:
Welcome to NADRA and thank you for supporting this worthwhile organization. As a member for 10 years I can attest to the knowledge, friendships and networking I have gained since joining.  Great to hear that you may be interested in helping with our D4S project, I have attached information on the recipient and project details.  We are planning to demo on Friday and finalize plans early next week once we have existing deck removed.  I will send permit plans to you as soon as we have them.  Hoping to have permit and be ready for footings the week after Thanksgiving. Thanks for your support, feel free to reach out with any questions.”
Pat

Stay tuned for more updates.

Deck for a Soldier® Build – New Jersey UPDATE

January 24th, 2017 UPDATE & Thank You:

Dear NADRA Members and Supporters,

I am extremely pleased to let everyone know that the Northeast Regions Deck for a Soldier® build went very smoothly and was completed in four days.  The build started on Monday, January 16th, 2017 with a crew from three separate builder member companies. We installed the Trex Elevations steel framing, along with the help from several Trex and distributor representatives.  Tuesday was supposed to be a wash-out of a rainy day, but several of us gathered, installed the stairway platform and cut all of the stair stringers.  Wednesday, we had crews from four builder members and we installed the decking, stairways, some fascia trim and the Andersen sliding door.  We also had representatives from Fortress Railings, Fiberon, and AZEK helping out.  Thursday, we had two crews, plus representatives from Trex, Wolf Home Products, Fortress Railings and Excelsior Lumber, Inc. that helped install the last of the fascia trim and the railings.  We were lucky enough to have spiked the interest of a local newspaper and also the TV station News 12, New Jersey. We also received coverage from The Daily Record, you can read more & see photos / video here.

Our Soldier was extremely thankful and really could not believe that a program like ours exists.  He was overwhelmed when wheeled out on the deck for the first time and was able to look around his neighborhood.  Kyle added: “The Deck for a Soldier® program has been top notch. Really great crew. I couldn’t even imagine something like this existed where people are just giving away decks for people but it does,” Chappell says.

I would like to thank, from the bottom of my heart, everyone involved in this project for their time and materials.  Many gave so freely to this project that it was inspiring to all.  I continuously heard the following words, “Whatever you need for this project, just let us know”.  We certainly could not have gotten this project done without the support of the best team in the decking industry.  NADRA Rocks!!

Respectfully,

Bruce Verblaauw

January 18th, 2017 UPDATE:

Hi NADRA!
Well, everything has fallen into place and we were able to start our Deck for a Soldier® build in Boonton Twsp., NJ on January 16th!  The Township has waived the permit fees except for the DCA fee.  We’ve had a local builder member offer to help out and dig the footing holes on Saturday 1/7/17.
We had a footing inspection on 1/11/17 and we completed the pour right after that along with the bottom of the stairway landing. We have several builders lined up to help out with this build for the four days that we anticipate the build to take, but we can always use more.  If anyone else wishes to help out please go online to fill out a pledge form found  here, or contact Bruce V. at  BruceVerb@njdecksandrailings.com.
Thanks to our awesome manufacturers, distributors and lumberyards, all of the necessary materials have been donated.  Be on the lookout for pictures and more on NADRA’s Facebook pageLike us on Facebook

January 4th, 2017 UPDATE:

We want to start out by wishing everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!!

We just wanted to let everyone know that we will be starting the Deck for a Soldier® build in Boonton, NJ on January 16th, weather permitting.  This project is located a little way off of Route 287 about 10 minutes north of Morristown, NJ.  This deck will be built using Trex Elevations Steel Framing, so if any of you would like to learn some of the ins and outs of working with this product, please let us know so we can schedule you to volunteer to frame.  Of course we will need help for about 4 days in order to complete this build and help tying up loose end to finish is always needed.  If you have already filled out a labor pledge, please let us know what day(s) that week work best for you or your crew.  We are also hoping to dig and pour the 10 footings required for this deck either late next week or very early the following week so that the concrete has time to cure before we start building.  We would appreciate if we could get a few guys to help dig these footings.  We have some builders but can still use a few more to step up and help out with this build.  If you are interested in helping and have not notified us or completed an online labor pledge, please email us or click on this link We will try to keep a steady flow of help on the project so that we do not have too many workers on any given day.
Thanks to all of our manufacturers, distributors and lumberyards, all of the materials have been accounted for.  The one thing that has not been supplied yet is a Porta-John.
As we hear back from each of you, we will put together a schedule that best fits the needs of the build and will be back in touch with you soon.
Thank you very much for your support and help,
Judy Verblaauw (on behalf of)

December 2016 UPDATE:

With the holidays just around the corner it is the time of year to think about giving in the old fashioned tradition for the holidays, donating to a great local cause and giving back to the community where we make our living.  The NADRA Deck for a Soldier® program is about to kick off it’s Northeastern build on 1/16/17, weather permitting.  We are planning to get a start right after the first of the year and install the footings prior to this build date.  We have almost all of the materials accounted for except for some concrete form tubes, a Porta-John, and some small hardware.  If anyone can help us with these last few things it would be greatly appreciated. Lastly, we can still use a few more builders to step up and help out with the build.  If anyone can donate time to help out on this project please contact us at bruceverb@njdecksandrailings.com.   You can fill out the online form to make your pledge of material, labor or even a monetary pledge for various unexpected expenses right here.

We will start to send out emails in order to figure out who can help on which day in the near future.  This will keep a steady flow to the project and keep from having too many workers on any given day.

Thank you and Happy Holidays to all.

NADRA, Deck For A Hero® Build

November 22nd, 2016 UPDATE:

Well, the Deck for a Hero®  project here in Atlanta is complete and it was by all measures a huge success. The homeowners, Andy and Martha Cook and children, are thrilled. Overall, this was a straightforward build, maximizing square footage for the family and offering a wide stair design with a mid-landing and 90-degree turn, something that was very important to the family.  Along with all the premium products donated for this deck build, we also were able to install an under deck system. Together, they now have almost 800 square feet of new outdoor living space!

I’m honored to have had the opportunity to lead this project and have to say thank you to everyone who was involved. Collectively, everyone who participated gave generously to make this project successful. You folks certainly made it easy and it was a lot more fun than work.

November 16th, 2016 UPDATE:

Day one was yesterday and we demolished the old deck and set the ledger and poured some footings in preparation for today’s (Wednesday) build. Hoping to wrap it up in one day for this deserving family. Things went well. Looking forward to a good day tomorrow with a good head start. I know the family is excited as the kids peered through the windows as we were working. Looking forward to them seeing the final result.

On another note, the city of Peachtree Corners is pretty excited and will have their PR person there and will be taking pictures and publishing something on their community news outlets. Good exposure for NADRA.

October 26th, 2016 UPDATE:

NADRA’s Deck for a Soldier® program is proud to announce its’ latest endeavor with an all new Deck for a Hero® build in Georgia! The recipients are a family who had three biological children and adopted two more children. They have just recently adopted five more children who lost their parents and their church was planning to send them to three separate homes. These kind people, who run a non-profit organization to help Orphan and Foster children, could not find it in their heart to allow this to happen. Please help NADRA build a fairly basic deck and stairway which will allow these ten children and parents some additional outdoor space.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Meet the Cook Family

They are a family of ten – 7 adopted and 3 biological.  Andy and Martha are the parents and several years ago Andy left his job of teaching and coaching to head up a Non-Profit Ministry called Promise 686.  He has devoted his life to helping meet the needs of Orphans and Foster children. He and Martha have a God directed heart toward this ministry that they exhibit in their work and at home.  Late last year they adopted 5 beautiful children to add to the 5 they already had.  I’ll let Martha’s sentiments from her family Blog of November 2015 tell you what that was like for them:

Typically when a family like this crosses our path through Promise686, we share with many others and watch it unfold for various people, but this one in particular did not keep going. They are 17(girl), 14 (girl), 12 (boy), 10(boy), and 2(boy). When we learned of them, their mother was dying of cancer, and their community church had a plan in place for these children to go to three different homes. The mother wanted her children to stay together but after looking for a family for them, she knew as she passed away that there were a few families who were willing to take them, but there wasn’t one where it would work to keep them all together daily. As you can imagine, for us having five children already, the story resonated, especially imagining if I died, and then picturing all of our children being split into various homes. We also imagined what it would be like for them to be separated from the 2 year old that they have helped care for the last two years while their mother was so sick. Their mom passed away six weeks ago and the children are being cared for by two great families within their church as of today. The decision was made on Monday for them to all come to our home in two weeks and for the 2 year old to come on Sunday…….

Our next step is to get our home ready for these children. Also, we’ll be figuring out the short term legal details of guardianship along with the long term adoption process. There’s a lot that has to happen with time.

We invite you to partner with us in any way you feel led. We could not say yes to a life altering decision such as this, without knowing we have people like you, layer upon layer behind us. It feels like an army to us where we know that when we are need, you all are right behind us holding us up.

The Cook family has experienced a tremendous blessing throughout the last year and with God’s help they are all beginning a lifetime of becoming a family.  Their needs on a daily basis are many.  But one need that we can help them with is a new Deck.  Their old one is falling apart and needs extensive repair or replacing.  I am hopeful that we as NADRA can come alongside them and offer a Deck for A Hero.

NADRA, Deck for a Soldier® Update – New Jersey

November 16, 2016 Deck for a Soldier® Update:

The New Jersey Deck for a Soldier® build is for a young soldier who served in the Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2007 – 2011 and was in the Inactive Reserve from 2011 – 2015.  A little over a year ago, he was on his way to work one morning as an electrician apprentice on his motorcycle when he was hit by an elderly gentleman.  He was in a coma for 45 days and was left with nerve damage in his eyes and right leg.  He lost part of his left leg.  His mom had to quit her job to help take care of him.  Friends all joined together to donate money to help him buy a house, but it only has a front entrance and no outdoor living space.  We are planning on installing a sliding door in the kitchen and a deck on the rear of the home to give them a second entrance, as well as, a place to enjoy the outdoors.

We have the deck framing, decking and railings. We are still in need of:

  • A door, The framing, insulation and trim necessary for the door install
  • Wood posts to support the deck
  • Misc. hardware,
  • Lighting
  • Porta-potty
  • Lunch
  • Monetary donations for small items

If you feel moved to help with this project, please go to the NADRA website and fill out the online pledge form, it would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the design for this project so far:

October 2016, Deck for a Soldier® Update:

NADRA New Jersey volunteers are still looking for additional material, labor and especially, monetary pledges, for the upcoming Deck For A Soldier® project in New Jersey. We do have quite a few decking material pledges but are still in need of some items like hardware, a sliding door, money for permit fees and builders to help with the labor. This build is for a young soldier who did two tours of duty and was severely hurt in a motorcycle accident after he returned home. We are planning to start this build in mid – late December. We are looking for material and labor donations to help with this project. If you would kindly go to the NADRA website and fill out the online pledge form, it would be greatly appreciated.

NADRA August 2015 Atlanta Chapter Meeting Re-Cap

NADRA Atlanta Chapter Meeting Re-Cap

August 2015

Our guest speaker from Constant Contact showcased the third meeting of 2015 taking place at the Ivy in Buckhead, GA.  There were 27 members and guests in attendance.  The meeting was held on August 18, 2015.

During the meeting the previous minutes were read and approved along with the anit-trust statement.  Nominations were made for the new board to include Mike Reasons as President, Joey Matthews for Vice-President, Joel Mooneyhan for Secretary and Kevin Waters for treasurer.  Voting for the new board will take place in the October meeting.

James Gunning spoke about the DeckExpo show and provided class, education and social information.  He also discussed NADRA’s main event and the National Deck Competition.  Several members of the Atlanta Chapter plan to attend.

Joey Matthews gave an update on the Deck for A Soldier project and all material and labor donations were finalized during the meeting.  The build, which is set to happen on Oct 1st, should be another great opportunity for us all to serve.

Main sponsors for the meeting was Southeastern Underdecking and iLighting.  Sean Ryan discussed a very detailed presentation on the new products from iLighting and benefits of their system.  Joey Mooneyhan discussed the benefits of using Southeastern Underdecking to keep a space below the deck dry.  They have many products that can help to finish out the normally unused area under the deck.

Demming Bass from Constant Contact gave us a very informative presentations and discussion on how to use Constant Contact to change the way we do our marketing.  His ideas on how to specifically use the service in the decking industry will prove to be helpful for many of our members.  Demming also discussed the partnership with NADRA and how we can save money.

The next meeting will be held at the Ivy Buckhead on Tuesday Oct 20th.

Respectfully Submitted,

James Gunning, Atlanta Chapter President

NADRA NJ January 2015 Meeting Recap

January 14th, 2015

From the President:

On Tuesday night Jan 13th I opened the meeting welcoming everyone back with the hopes that all attendees had a wonderful Holiday and a happy New Year. I was extremely pleased that we had a very healthy turn out for the first meeting of 2015. We had a wonderful blend of attendees.

After we all introduced ourselves I reminded everyone whom our past sponsors had been in late 2014 and that it is our responsibility as a chapter to support the products that sponsor our meetings. Following that reminder our NJ Chapter Secretary, Judy,  followed up on the minutes from our last meeting and the Chapter Treasurer, Gus, reported on our financials. Some of the members had some good questions about our budget and they asked about our intent with the budget. Gus explained the need to cover the costs of some events and that we need to continue to grow our budget so in the future we could potentially look at events or promotional ideas for the chapter. Some of the members suggested we look to invest in some small social media like Facebook. A motion was made to invest in utilizing Facebook to help promote our Chapter. Everyone felt this was a great idea for the Chapter. We all feel the need to continue to make more of a presence. As NADRA some progress has been made but we need to continue to strive forward and grow.

After Gus had updated everyone on the financial aspect of the Chapter I introduced Vinnie C. from Admiral Spacemaker. He was the Sponsor of the meeting. Joining him was a fellow NADRA member, Dave Lombardo from MD. Vinnie launched into his presentation explaining the benefit of Admiral Spacemaker and Dave added to the presentation by discussing some of the installs he had completed over the last few months. All levels of the channel had excellent questions. They seemed excited to see a new concept in the market. Some of the builders had great questions as it related to install techniques, which Dave was happy to answer.

On the heels of Vinnie’s presentation we had our guest speaker Michael Beaudry from NADRA HQ explain to the group all of the tools that NADRA offers. He expressed how pleased he was with our participation with the Deck for a Soldier®  program. On a local level, he suggested we get more involved with Deck Safety Month® . He reminded everyone about the deck certification course and reminded all attendees that NADRA had just completed the deck certification course with a good number of home inspectors. He explained that all of those inspectors will be looking for NADRA deck builders as decks need to be replaced. It was refreshing to be reminded of all the wonderful marketing tools that NADRA really offers and in the future we should always consider adding the NADRA logo to our business cards, letter head, etc. We need to continue to raise awareness wherever we can. For the retailers he made a wonderful suggestion by reminding them they should post the deck safety checklist for homeowners and contractors to see at their locations.

Our committee updates went very well. We discussed the upcoming deck awards and reminded everyone to please register and get projects submitted and by a show of hands I asked who might be supporting the awards by submitting projects. All of the builders agreed to participate and then Judy in turn asked about sponsorship and asked the manufacturers/distributors and dealers to please get their sponsorship forms filled out and turned in. Everyone is excited about the event and it looks to me like we will get some good participation. Gus and Bruce spent some time reviewing our recent Deck for Hope project and how well it went and how much we appreciated many of the manufacturer reps stepping up in addition to our builders. Bruce read off a beautiful email that we got from Jack M.- the project coordinator for Homes for Our Troops. He really appreciates what we are doing in trying to give back. Feeling humbled, I reminded the group how it has made me feel so much gratitude for being part of the NADRA organization. Tina from MRS did a very professional report on some fun events we will look to do based on surveys she had taken months back. As part of the location committee she mentioned we all agreed to keep our meetings at the same place for sake of consistency.

After our committee updates I again thanked all in attendance and again thanked our sponsor and our guest speaker. Overall, an awesome meeting with great content and great participation by all attendees!

Deck for Hope, NADRA NJ

The New Jersey Chapter of NADRA does it again!!!
Last week our members in New Jersey got together to help a young man (18 years old Mike Nichols) who was severely injured during an Ice Hockey game his senior year in high school.

A little about Mike: “Each day he continues to make progress, not only for himself, but for others as he uses his story to raise awareness about spinal cord injuries and as an advocate for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation’s “Big Idea” campaign in support of epidural stimulation research. “I think the more important goal other than being able to walk or skate or do the things I love to do is helping others who are paralyzed, not only those who are paralyzed, but who are handicapped or disabled,” Mike said. “I know firsthand how difficult it is to live this way. I want to make a difference so that one day there is a world without wheelchairs. I hope to god before I die I can see that happen.

About the Build:

This is a special message from your NJ “Deck for a Soldier’ committee members.  We just wanted to let our entire chapter know that the “Deck for Hope” project that a lot of us worked on was a complete success.  This was an easier project including a small deck and a 27′ long ramp to help the recipient gain access to his house.  To the best of our knowledge most of the pressure treated wood materials that we built this deck from were either previously donated or purchased by the family, so we just needed the basic hardware and fasteners.  The project lasted just two and a half days and we must thank a few parties for this quick success.  First there was Jack McNaboe who brought this project to our attention through Jen Sheridan of Phoenix Mfg..  Next we must thank the Monroe Township Football Team for digging the footing holes and then mixing and pouring the concrete in them under the supervision of Jack McNaboe.  The next person who we all must thank was our most crucial person on the front line, the builder who took the lead role on this project, Gustavo delaCruz.  Thank you so much for all of your time and dedication to this project and our NJ Chapter of NADRA.  The next time you see Gustavo, be sure to thank him for everything he did to pull this project together, lead the project while physically working on it as well.  The recipient is an 18 year old boy who was very seriously injured playing ice hockey with his high school team and is now a quadriplegic.  He just completed high school last spring.  He and his parents were so very grateful for our help on this project and expressed it every time we saw them.
Following is a list of Manufacturers who we must thank for their very generous contributions:
  • FastenMaster
  • Simpson Strong-Tie
  • Starborn Industries
Following are the Lumberyards who also made generous contributions:
  • Abbe Lumber
  • Excelsior Lumber
Last but not least are the builders and manufacturer’s reps. who took time out of their busy schedules to help on this build:
  • Gustavo delaCruz – Barrett Outdoors – Team Leader,  Deck for a Soldier Committee Member
  • Bryan Hess – FastenMaster
  • Jeff Mekelburg – FastenMaster
  • Tom O’Rourke – Phoenix Mfg.
  • Pete Miller – Mid State Lumber
  • Dave Ondich – Regal Ideas
  • Bill Lecorchick – Legends Built
  • Lainie Sleppin – LBM Solutions
  • Tim Schlosser – Trex
  • Rick Fennelly – My Deck
  • Jonathan Lascelle – My Deck
  • Jeff Wilkins – CPG, AZEK – TimberTech
  • Alan Bensen – CPG, AZEK – TimberTech
  • Michael Ryan – CPG, AZEK – TimberTech
  • Dan Miles – Miles Decks
  • Kenny Rauber – Parksite
  • Bruce Verblaauw – C. Verblaauw & Sons, LLC, Deck for a Soldier Committee Member
A special Thank you goes out to those individuals who donated several days to this project.  Without your generosity this project would not have been completed so quickly!
