What’s Next in Outdoor Living?

Top 10 Trends for 2020

WINCHESTER, Va. – The popularity of outdoor living spaces has never been higher, and the appeal of the great outdoors seems to keep getting greater with homeowners across the country investing more time and money into their outdoor spaces. As the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, and leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products, Trex Company keeps a finger on the pulse of this rapidly growing industry. Based on input from internal experts and insights from dealers, contractors and industry insiders, the company has, once again, compiled its annual Outdoor Living Forecast predicting design trends for 2020 and beyond.

“It’s always fascinating to compare the trends reported by our customers with those projected by the industry at large,” notes Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing for Trex Company. “This year, we added insights from two high-profile design and lifestyle experts – Alison Victoria and Evette Rios – to the mix. Their perspectives helped to reinforce our predictions and take our forecast to a whole new level.”

Following are 10 trends that will influence outdoor living as we begin a new decade of design:

1.Mixed Materials

Say so long to matchy, matchy and monochromatic. 2020 is the year to mix it up – both indoors and out. Add visual interest to an outdoor space by juxtaposing materials such as concrete and composite, wicker and aluminum, copper and stone. Integrate nature-inspired materials that maintain cohesion with the natural surroundings, and infuse color and pattern with pillows, cushions, furnishings and decorative accents.

2.Industrial Inspiration

As homeowners increasingly find inspiration for their outdoor spaces in commercial settings, like upscale hotels and restaurants, there is a growing shift toward sleek, contemporary designs and materials, larger expanses of glass, smooth surfaces, and clean lines. Outdoors, this trend is manifesting in more commercially inspired railing styles. Trex Signature® Railing, for instance, features a range of minimalist, yet sturdy, aluminum options, including rod rail, glass panels and mesh inserts – designed to optimize sightlines and deliver a modern, industrial flair.

3.Cladding

Another commercial-to-residential trend is the use of cladding, which is growing in popularity across the country. Functionally, cladding provides a protective rainscreen to a home or outdoor living area, while also improving curb appeal. Modern exteriors with clean lines and simple designs are among those attributes most commonly requested by homebuyers and homeowners with a particular emphasis on wood looks. For those seeking the aesthetics of wood cladding without the hassles of constant upkeep, composite cladding offers a high-performance, low-maintenance alternative.

“Anyone who follows my work knows that I’m all about cladding. I’m also all about the ease and aesthetics of Trex composite boards,” says Victoria, host of HGTV’s ‘Windy City Rehab.’ “I use Trex for all of my cladding applications – and even have it on my own deck at home. It is fresh and distinctive and lends a modern interior aesthetic to an outdoor space.”

4.Outdoor Kitchens

As the foodie phenomenon continues to thrive, homeowners are increasingly making room – both in their budgets and floorplans – for outdoor kitchens. In recent years, outdoor cooking areas have evolved from stand-alone grills to fully appointed spaces with specialty appliances ranging from smokers and side burners to pizza ovens and integrated refrigerated storage. Capturing this trend is the new Trex® Outdoor Kitchens collection. The luxurious lineup features stainless steel cabinetry solutions in color and style options that allow designers and homeowners to create functional spaces that rival interior kitchens – all crafted to withstand and endure exposure to the elements.

5.Vertical Gardens

Among the biggest trends for 2020 is natural greenery. Installing a vertical garden or ‘living wall’ outside your home can give you plenty of extra space for growing your favorite plants while also serving as an attractive, artful addition to your deck. There are numerous plans, tips and tutorials available online for designing and building a vertical garden. For optimal structural support and aesthetics, Trex® Cladding is an ideal choice for these projects, delivering premium aesthetics with all the durability, low-maintenance and eco-friendly benefits of Trex decking.

6.Fire Features

The allure of flickering flames from an outdoor fire are hard to rival or resist, which is why fire features will continue to be ‘hot’ this season. Available in a variety of shapes, sizes and finishes, fire features add warmth, ambience and a touch of drama to any deck or patio. Fire pots, such as those in the new Trex® Outdoor Fire & Water collection, can be positioned almost anywhere to create a cozy gathering spot – or combined in a series to provide an ambient boundary for larger outdoor areas. For even greater visual impact, a fire table can serve as a focal point and elevate the luxury and comfort of an outdoor space. Whether a warm summer evening or a cold winter night, a fire feature can make it feel like it’s a good idea to be outside any time of the year.

7.Soothing Water

Few outdoor elements elicit the same reaction as a well-placed water feature. The soothing sound of trickling water conjures calm and can set a relaxed tone and atmosphere. It can also act as a charming focal point for a backyard and can tie together an entire landscape. In addition to distinctive fire elements, the new Trex® Outdoor Fire & Water collection features a range of water spillways and water bowls made of premium-grade copper and stainless steel, and expertly engineered to ensure smooth water flow and optimal aesthetics to add beauty and tranquility to any outdoor space.

8.Creative Privacy

Urban outdoor spaces and smaller yards will benefit from big imaginations and clever innovations in 2020. Inspired by home improvement TV and magazines, look for design-savvy, yet space-constrained, homeowners to employ inventive uses of screening, fencing, all-weather curtains, and lattice to maximize area and privacy in creative ways.

9.Bonus Space

If you have a raised deck, there is undoubtedly some open space underneath. While, historically, this space has been used for storage, the design trend for 2020 is to turn it into bonus living space by installing a deck drainage system. Designed to divert water away from a deck, systems such as Trex® RainEscape® create dry space beneath an elevated deck that can be outfitted with everything from furniture and accessories to lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and entertainment components. This deck feature allows homeowners to maximize their space and provides convenient cover from the sun and rain.

10.Year-Round Retreats

As outdoor living continues to gain popularity across all regions, homeowners are becoming more willing to invest in elements that will extend the use of their outdoor spaces past sunset and past the traditional outdoor living season. Deck lighting incorporated into railings, post caps and stairs can increase safety and ambience while also extending the time that homeowners can spend outdoors. Pergolas, patio umbrellas and misters offer respite and refreshment on hot, sunny days. When temperatures drop, heating features, cozy throws and protective screens can provide welcome warmth and allow for use and enjoyment of an outdoor space all year long.

Why Nichigo G-Tape on Decks?

As originally published on Nichigo G-Tape’s website HERE

Water finds a way.

In the construction industry, it is always important to keep that in mind. Water ALWAYS finds a way. This is especially true when it comes to deck building.

All things being equal, wood rot is one of the first places a deck begins to fail. Being exposed to the elements 365 days a year means there are many opportunities for water to find its way into a board and accelerate the degradation.

There are two weak spots in deck lumber: horizontal surfaces and fastener punctures. With the growing composite deck board market, those boards act like a seal trapping water between the composite boards and the wooden joist boards underneath. Punctures drive through treatments exposing the fresh, raw wood underneath.

The weakness is then multiplied on horizontal surfaces WITH fastener punctures. We designed 3040BK to protect decks from this very issue.

To demonstrate just how much protection 3040BK offers, we turned to our R/D lab to run accelerated tests. We drove nails through our 3040BK, sealed off the top, poured dyed water in, and placed collection cups underneath to see what would soak through.

Next, our team ran two tests, high temp and high UV exposure. Both tests ran for the equivalent of 20 years outdoor exposure.

Turns out our collection cups weren’t necessary, as neither test had any failures. All 10 nails in each test were perfectly dry and 3040BK was still holding strong.

Use 3040BK to make water find a different way.

DECKING OUT A CONDO IN THE CITY BY THE BAY: AZEK BUILDING PRODUCTS

DECKING OUT A CONDO IN THE CITY BY THE BAY

It isn’t every day that Steven and Brucie Schneider, of San Rafael, California-based construction company Schneider Construction, are asked to build a deck on TOP of a building. Fortunately, when that does happen, which seems to be a new trend in the San Francisco area and beyond, they are more than up to the task.

Condo Rooftop in San Francisco

And that’s just the challenge the dynamic duo of Steve and Brucie recently faced when they were tasked with solving a condo association’s challenge of expanding a rooftop area that was once the site of a rotting, wooden deck. Keeping that deck failure in mind, they wanted to provide the owners with a low-maintenance and durable option for the new deck. The revamped outdoor space will serve as a common area for condo residents, while providing a gorgeous, bird’s eye view of the San Francisco skyline.

AZEK Deck on Condo Rooftop in San Francisco

Inspired by its rich color and superior durability, as well as its Class “A” flame spread rating, Steve and Brucie selected AZEK Deck’s Vintage Collection in Mahogany. According to Steve, they have worked with AZEK Deck for several years because of its aesthetic appeal and it’s easy to transport. They also really like it for roof top installations because it’s lightweight, won’t add unnecessary weight to the building and AZEK’s Vintage Collection carries the Class ‘A’ Flame spread rating, which many buildings in California require.

“We specifically chose AZEK Deck for the 10th Street Lofts because we wanted to create this space with materials that are sustainable and low maintenance,” Steve said. “The condo association and homeowners already dealt with a wood deck that needed to be replaced after only seven years. We knew that AZEK products would look beautiful, and are also engineered to last far longer than traditional wood decks. And AZEK Deck’s 30-year fade and stain warranty and limited lifetime warranty are major benefits to the homeowners.”

But first, in order to bring this project to life, the Schneiders had to figure out how to get all of the materials onto the rooftop since the interior elevator access wouldn’t accommodate the long lengths of decking. The solution? Use a heavy duty crane to hoist all the materials from a nearby parking area onto the residential rooftop. This coordination took a herculean effort from the builder, the city and nearby residents to ensure the project got off the ground without a hitch. Pun intended! Everything worked as they planned and they were soon off to the races!

For this project, Schneider’s team also had to develop a unique understructure solution for the decking that would fit the space constraints below the condo’s rooftop access doors. Steve engineered the one-of-a-kind deck support with steel to provide a stable base for the decking and railing.

In the end, the project was completed on time and offers a gorgeous view for residents to enjoy the San Francisco skyline – during the day or into the evening – and everyone is thrilled with the new low maintenance deck. But don’t just take our word for it. Watch the entire project unfold right before your eyes.Completed AZEK Rooftop Deck

NOTE: The Class “A” Flame Spread Index rating is based on results of testing per ASTM E84, recognized by the International Building Code (IBC) as a standard method for testing flame spread.

Story Of A Landscape: Country Club Expands Outdoor Living Area

Just as with homeowners, businesses sometimes feel the need to expand into the great outdoors. When the Blue Bell Country Club started considering such a move, officers found they had an extra club in the bag with Brian Stover.

Stover is not only a member, but he’s also a landscape designer and the owner of FS Landscaping Contractors, Inc., and Tru-Scapes Landscape Lighting in nearby Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

“The general manager asked me to design an outdoor living area for the members to sit outside,” Stover explains. “They were thinking about a fire pit, so, I designed a patio and fire pit using Belgard Products, and then I also integrated a Trex Deck cantilevered out over a pond to view the fountain.”

Photo: FS Landscaping Contractors, Inc., Tru-Scapes Landscape Lighting, Belgard Products

And, he incorporated several different types of lighting because, as Stover says, “The idea was to extend the time when people are done dining or golfing; they wanted to extend the time they’d spend there at night.”

Stover went with quality over quantity with his design. What he describes as “a stone patio walkway” is only about 300 square feet, but it supports a 36-inch gas-supplied fire pit and features both Adirondack chairs and a seating wall made from Belgard’s Belair wall product.

It also carries visitors out to the approximately 120-square-foot Trex deck.

“We had Amazing Decks out of Ambler, Pennsylvania, come in,” Stover says. “They specialize in curving deck railings and deck boards, and we did a custom curved deck where the front-end curves out over the pond.”

Not only is the look attractive, he feels, but because the pond’s embankment falls away at that point, it was the best option to extend the usable area.

However, excavating for the project proved to be its biggest challenge.

“We had to make it ADA- [Americans with Disabilities Act] compliant,” Stover notes. “We were working with a little bit of a hillside, and we needed to cut into that to make it level. There was some challenge to the topography, but being a commercial property we had to make sure we followed ADA.”

Thanks to the seating wall and the deck extension, Stover estimates the addition can easily accommodate 15 people.

Stover’s particularly pleased with the fire pit, and not just because he says working with the Blue Bell team and his own crew enabled them to run just the right amount of gas out to the fire pit to create a great flame.

Photo: FS Landscaping Contractors, Inc., Tru-Scapes Landscape Lighting, Belgard Products

“My team custom-cut the Belair Wall product to veneer the fire pit, and that really makes it sparkle,” he says. “It also has encouraged Belgard to potentially make a fire pit kit out of their Belair wall product.”

And, to make sure it meets the club’s need to retain late visitors, the project is amply lit by Tru-Scapes Landscape Lighting products, including hardscape wall lights as part of the seating wall, up-lighting for nearby trees, path-lighting along the walkway, and Tru-Scape post cap lights on the deck posts.

The project also didn’t stint on the softscape. Where the pond embankment had been disturbed, Stover worked in some boulders, and then planted Purple Verbena to cascade over them. While the newly planted area includes both spring and fall color, he says the greatest emphasis was on summer color because that’s when the country club sees the most visitors.

Photo: FS Landscaping Contractors, Inc., Tru-Scapes Landscape Lighting, Belgard Products

“Summer colors include Black-eyed Susans and the Verbena,” he says. “Some of it was creating balance with focal points. For instance, there’s a Japanese Maple to the left of the patio and a Pink Dogwood to the right. Not only does it create a nice balance with the plant material during the day, but when you’re putting lights on it, you have balance, as well.”

Actual construction of the project took less than three weeks utilizing FS Landscaping crews, but Stover says putting together the team to do the project — and figure out its financing — not only took longer, but was a real learning experience.

Stover explains that originally the country club had a smaller budget worked out for the project.

“When they saw the design, they really wanted it, and so I said, ‘I’d rather build this than the smaller version that fits your budget,’” he says. “I worked out several deals with the team, and I worked out a deal with the country club where I now have a membership there for life. I figured I’d rather go big and work out the other stuff.”

The key, he says, turned out to be a good bit of networking.

“Putting the team together, Blue Bell Country Club and Belgard Pavers, Trex Decking, Amazing Decks, FS Landscaping, Tru-Scapes Landscape Lighting and Froehlich’s Farm & Garden (of Furlong, Pennsylvania, who provided the plants), was just awesome,” Stover says. “I learned that putting a team together and having a success project like this goes a long way.”

And, the project is a success no matter how you look at it. Not only did it win awards from Hardscape North America and the North American Deck and Rail Association, but it’s achieved the country club’s goal of keeping people there into the evenings.

“Over the summer they did a wine-and-cheese event, they did a beer-tasting event and they’ve put live music out on the deck,” Stover says. “It’s definitely become a feature, and the ambiance is fantastic.”

Just receiving compliments from his fellow members and seeing how much they’re enjoying the space is one reason Stover is proud of the project. However, he’s also pleased with how well the job turned out.

“I’m proud of how I integrated so much outdoor living in one small space,” he concludes. “We took a lot of really great outdoor living elements, squeezed them into one small space, and it all flows and works. It all works.”

Trex Unveils Top Trends in Outdoor Living for 2018

Source:www.trex.com

Trex Unveils Top Trends in Outdoor Living for 2018
www.trex.com
Desire for Personalization and Year-Round Enjoyment; Ushers In New Approaches to Design and Materials.

With the popularity of outdoor living expected to hit its highest peak yet this year*, homeowners across the country will be going all-in for the outdoors in 2018.

Once again, Trex Company, the world’s #1 brand of premium decking and railing, has gleaned insights from contractors, homeowners and industry experts to compile its annual outdoor living forecast.

“Among the biggest trends we are seeing is a shift away from seasonality as consumers adopt more of a year-round mindset regarding their outdoor spaces,” said Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex Company.

“Outdoor living is no longer restricted to spring and summer nor reserved for certain parts of the country. Thanks to new high-performance materials and innovative design approaches, homeowners everywhere are transforming their outdoor spaces into multi-seasonal extensions of their homes.”

Following are some of the other top trends that will be dominating the outdoor living landscape in 2018:

Minimal Maintenance, Maximum Enjoyment

Just because people are spending more time outdoors doesn’t mean they’re willing to put in extra hours for care and maintenance. In fact, high-maintenance materials, such as wood, are seeing a decrease in demand as people are opting for lower-maintenance offerings that deliver better performance and sustainability.

Wood alternatives, particularly composite decking, are expected to experience above average annual gains in demand through 2020. Analysts predict this segment of the decking industry will grow at a faster rate than traditional wood** – and for good reason.

Unlike wood, high-performance composites, such as Trex, resist fading, staining, scratching and mold – and won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter.

No sanding, staining or painting is required, and food and drink spills wash off easily with just soap and water. Additionally, Trex decking is made from 95 percent recycled material, making it an environmentally friendly choice for eco-conscious consumers.

Comfy Cozy

Among the hottest design influences right now is “hygge” (pronounced hoo-gah) – the Scandinavian term for a feeling of coziness and comfort. This season, outdoor spaces will beckon homeowners and their guests to relax and rejuvenate with hygge-inspired accents, from plush cushions and throws to protective pergolas and cozy warming features.

Trex contractors also have reported an uptick in requests for its RainEscape® deck drainage system by clients looking to add multi-seasonal living space underneath an elevated deck.

Residential Goes Commercial

With the heightened focus on creating “outdoor rooms,” railing is finally getting the attention it deserves as homeowners recognize its role as not only the functional frame of their space but also one of the most visually prominent design elements.

While railing matched to the decking remains perennially popular, an increasing number of homeowners are taking advantage of the complementary decking and railing pairings afforded by new railing materials in modern, metal finishes, as well as sleek designs inspired by commercial architecture.

“Our contractors are seeing more homeowners being inspired by outdoor spaces they find in commercial settings, such as hotels and urban rooftops, and wanting to replicate those looks in their homes,” noted Zambanini.

A prime example of this commercial-to-residential trend is the growing popularity of horizontal railings such as rod rail – a sleek, sturdy look that’s ideal for customers who like the view-optimizing aspects of cable railing, but with a modern, industrial touch.

Hide & Chic

With the increased usage of outdoor living spaces comes higher demand for chic storage options and privacy.

“Nothing can dampen the view of a gorgeous sunset or the enjoyment of an elegant al fresco gathering quite like unsightly plastic storage, trash bins or scattered tools, lawn equipment and toys cluttering the scene,” Zambanini said. “Today’s homeowners are interested in both function and design, with solutions that add ambiance rather than detract from it.”

Adding beauty to any outdoor space, lattice panels are perfect for enhancing privacy and concealing storage areas or unsightly views.

With styles ranging from romantic to deco, lattice panels can easily be integrated into both new and existing outdoor living spaces and applied to structures such as arbors, trellises and gazebos, or used as decorative wainscoting or deck skirting. It’s a clever – and easy – design trick that adds both personal style and functionality to any outdoor living space.

Customized outdoor cabinetry and storage solutions also are available in designs that integrate seamlessly with popular decking finishes. These functional and fashionable components include built-in trash bins and ice chests, as well as sink cabinets and grill bases to hide plumbing and gas hook-ups for a completely finished look.

Fun & Games

Kids are not the only ones who enjoy playing outside! Outdoor play spaces for all ages are on the rise, including everything from swimming pools and embedded sandboxes to regulation cornhole courts, horseshoe pits and dedicated spaces for volleyball, badminton and bocce ball.

Beyond yard games, outdoor entertainment has reached a whole new level thanks to advancements in both equipment and equipment storage. Electronics manufacturers now offer televisions and entertainment systems specifically designed for the outdoors, taking into consideration differences in lighting and outdoor acoustics.

Meanwhile, new storage options include durable wall-mounted television and entertainment centers that beautifully protect pricey electronics from the elements, while concealing all of the unsightly – and potentially unsafe – cords and cables.

Trex Commercial Products Debuts Custom Railing Solutions at IBS

PRESS RELEASE

“From stadiums and large public works to universities and hospitals, no two commercial projects are alike – and their railing systems shouldn’t be either,” noted John Lewis, president and CEO of Trex Commercial Products. “Instead, Trex Commercial Products takes an individualized approach by designing, engineering and manufacturing custom railing solutions tailored to each specific project.”

Trex Commercial Products will showcase several of these solutions within the Trex Company booth (#W3440) at this year’s show, including:

  • Tensiline Cable Rail – A popular look at stadiums and other settings where sightlines are paramount, TCP’s Tensiline Cable Rail system is designed and constructed using stainless steel cables and a selection of stainless steel fittings and turnbuckles. The use of stainless steel cable allows for minimal sightline obstruction, while a variety of materials, finishes and colors are available to create the desired look for any project.
  • Gridguard™ Rail – An industrial look that offers strength and security, TCP’s Gridguard™ Perforated Rail and Mesh Rail systems are available in a variety of wire mesh panels and other infill materials, with flexible mounting methods that allow for use in nearly any location. A variety of materials, finishes, colors and infill attachment styles are available to meet specific facility requirements.
  • Line Rail – A sleek, contemporary style that offers the luxurious look of glass infill, the Line series is characterized by the clean, modern rod style standoff and glass mount. Builders can choose between top rail and handrail options, determine top-mount or fascia-mount surface attachment, and specify infill glass material, thickness and orientation for complete customization.
  • Track Rail – A popular interior look, Track Rail with glass infill provides a bright, airy atmosphere to any setting. The beauty lies in its subtlety, as the system is designed and constructed without the use of vertical balusters or posts between glass infill panels for high visibility throughout the space. The Track Rail system can be customized with multiple cladding options and glass types, including tempered, laminated, low iron, fritted, PVB interlayer, SGP interlayer, colored interlayer and patterned interlayer.
  • Dot Rail – The most distinguishable feature of the Dot Rail series is its unobtrusive circular glass mounts attached to TCP’s trapezoidal posts. Both handrail and top rail choices have three distinct rail standoff options creating more design flexibility – a rectangular base plate side mount for a clean mounting solution, a node-style side mount for a minimalistic installation look and an oval side mount base plate for a more linear, compact look.

“The Trex Commercial Products team has supplied railing for some of the largest projects in the country, and this wealth of experience provides us with the ability and expertise to achieve unrivaled customization and customer service,” said James E. Cline, president and CEO of Trex Company. “Through Trex Commercial Products, we aim to expand the relationship with builders and architects across the category. We’re thrilled to make our debut with such a strong line-up of core products that lay the foundation for future innovation within the commercial railing industry.”

TimberTech® by AZEK® Building Products Announces Launch of Three New Decking Colors at 2018 International Builders’ Show

AZEK Building Products Logo

PRESS RELEASE

TimberTech’s Legacy Collection was the first hand-scraped decking in the capped wood composite category, taking a trend seen in interior hardwood flooring, and bringing it to the outdoors.  After completing extensive research over the past year looking at consumer demand and design trends in outdoor living, TimberTech is introducing three new colors to its premium Legacy Collection. The additions include: Sequoia™, Espresso, and Whitewash Cedar™. Dedicated to providing homeowners with authentic, real-wood alternatives, the AZEK Building Products design team recognized an unmet need in the market for more dramatic designs and colors, including white decking, a color that has generated extremely positive initial feedback from customers.

“We are always listening to our contractors and homeowners to learn more about what is missing in the marketplace,” said Patrick Barnds, SVP of AZEK Building Products. “We are now offering our TimberTech capped wood composite decking in an extensive array of 16 colors, from three different collections and price points. Now more than ever, homeowners can find a color and finish that allows them to upgrade their current outdoor space while complementing their home’s existing aesthetic.”

Confident in its quality, TimberTech decking is also announcing a new warranty, upgrading from a 25-year to a 30-year limited warranty, complementing its industry-leading 30-year limited fade and stain warranty. With a superior protective polymer cap on all four sides of the board that eliminates any organic materials, TimberTech capped composites have the strength to battle almost anything Mother Nature brings. TimberTech decking is splinter free and is resistant to rot, mold, mildew and moisture damage.

Also at IBS, TimberTech will be unveiling a new fastening option with its hand-driven version of FUSIONLoc®, an exclusive fastener engineered for strength and precision.
