As we have seen in many other industries, when consumers lack confidence due to some “bad eggs” the government often steps in to impose regulations. The increasing media attention on frequent deck/balcony failures and increased deck code development programs point to and support an inherent lack of consumer and distributor confidence.
As “the independent”, association for the deck and railing industry, NADRA stands as an impartial advocate for our industry, and its consumers. Our reputation and unique position demanded we develop a “Consumer Awareness” program that would allow our industry leaders to help self-regulate our products through standardized testing protocols supported by independent external verification.
The program we have developed (supported by our team of technical advisors) over the last 5 years ensures you, our stakeholders can be directly involved in policing our industry to reduce and remove inferior products while establishing validation for quality decking manufacturers. Additionally, it will finally give all of us an independent tool when interfacing with our consumers to aid in eliminating purchase anxiety and unrealistic consumer expectations that so often create the negative social media backlash, warranty claims, and the legal headaches we all abhor.
NADRA is pleased to introduce the NADRA CPAC (Consumer Product Awareness Charter) program.

NADRA Announces Newly Elected Executive Committee and Board Members

Quakertown, PA., January 10th, 2018 – The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) announced the new Board of Directors, including members to the Executive Committee.
Matt Breyer, Breyer Construction & Landscape, LLC was appointed as NADRA’s President & will serve for two years. Matt is an experienced remodeler and entrepreneur, Breyer has more than 15 years in the industry.
Heath Bowman, Southeastern Underdeck Systems, LLC & Haven, was appointed as NADRA’s Vice President. Heath will also serve for 2 years.
Bruce Verblaauw, C. Verblaauw and Sons, LLC, was elected Treasurer & will also serve two years on the Executive Committee. Kirk Hammond, Lonza, now serves as NADRA’s Immediate Past President and will remain in this position for 2 years.

It’s been 10 years since the first D4S build. Time sure does fly by. One of the goals on NADRA’s strategic plan set for 2018, was to create a new logo for the beloved Deck for a Soldier® program.
The new logo was completed ahead of schedule & we couldn’t wait to share it with you.
The best part? A second logo was created for all NADRA members who make a pledge and support the program. An exclusive “Proud Supporter” logo will be available to current members in the coming weeks. The D4S committee will be organizing this project and sending the logos soon. They will be available in color, black and white.

December 19th, 2017 UPDATE
NADRA’s Deck for a Soldier® build in MN is moving along nicely. Our friends up North could use some cheering on. You can send encouragement by posting comments below. It’s been a cold few weeks and these guys are putting in some serious hours trying to wrap up this deck in time for Christmas.
Pat Noonan from Deck and Basement Co., his team & the crew at Jigsaw Builders installed the framing for the new deck last week. Pat Noonan took the lead in custom bending the decking for the curved front at Pro Deck Supply and Lumberyard. As you read this, the guys are on site installing the Wolf brand decking. Bob Lett, VP of National Sales for Wolf flew in to help with the build along with with Mark Fischer. The crew from Infinite Decks are assisting with the install as well.
DECEMBER 6TH, 2017 UPDATE
The MN D4S project is ready to rumble.
Props need to go out to the Brawlers from Crossroads Remodeling for TCB on the existing dilapidated deck/porch that was there. I brought lunch to give them some afternoon energy and they were raking up the last shards of wood, not quite sure how they did all that in 4 hours.
Craig and Craig (no joke) from GoliathTech got the build started installing their Helical footings with a balmy -2 windchill and snow on the ground. Although with a fresh layer of ice out on the roads I think it took them way longer to drive there than it did to actually set the footings.
It took Mark from Infinite Decks about 2 minutes on the site to sell me on his curves. We decided if we are going to do this thing it lets do it right, big and nice curves. Check out his awesome renderings of the masterpiece we are about to create.
Looks like Santa Claus from the Deck Store in Apple Valley is going to give us an early Christmas present by donating all the green for the project. Thanks Bob-we really appreciate your support!
Framing starts next week with the team from Deck and Basement and Jigsaw Builders-with a projected high of 15 on Tuesday they better be working fast to keep themselves warm…
November 21st, 2017 UPDATE
Just a quick update as this Thanksgiving week winds down. One of the things that we should all be thankful about are the men and women who keep our great country safe. Please be sure to say a Thanksgiving prayer for all of our armed forces both home and abroad.
The Minnesota region has begun it’s Deck for a Soldier® project on a Veterans home. They have torn down the old deck and are getting ready to begin the build once permits are in order. They may still need a pledge of pressure treated lumber for the framing, so if you can help please click on this link or contact myself or Pat Noonan. We are also looking someone to pledge a plaque that would hang on or near this deck to acknowledge the NADRA Deck for a Soldier® program for donating the deck. Again, please click on the provided link or contact one of us.
The Northeastern region is currently drawing up the plans and will get the permit paperwork submitted in the near future. They are hoping to begin their build in January or February. Once this project gets closer we will be looking for pledges for this project as well.

November 15th, 2017 UPDATE:
NADRA Members begin building a deck for Minnesota Alliance Council for Veterans (MACV)
NADRA members in MN got together to plan this years Deck for a Soldier® build. They chose MACV as their recipient. This worthy organization runs multiple transitional living homes for Veterans in crisis to help them get back on their feet and back into their own independent housing. One of their homes has an old deck that has been condemned by the City of Minneapolis and is literally falling apart.
Pat Noonan, Deck and Basement Company is leading the project with the support of many local members. Pat writes to the crews just this morning:
“Welcome to NADRA and thank you for supporting this worthwhile organization. As a member for 10 years I can attest to the knowledge, friendships and networking I have gained since joining. Great to hear that you may be interested in helping with our D4S project, I have attached information on the recipient and project details. We are planning to demo on Friday and finalize plans early next week once we have existing deck removed. I will send permit plans to you as soon as we have them. Hoping to have permit and be ready for footings the week after Thanksgiving. Thanks for your support, feel free to reach out with any questions.”

Minnesota Deck for a Soldier® Update: Several deck builders are getting ready to get the ball rolling on a Deck for a Soldier® build for the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans at one of their Structured Independent Living Facilities. This is a non-profit organization that helps needy and homeless veterans get back on track. We are currently looking for material and labor pledges for this project. NADRA National Deck for a Soldier Committee Chairman
Reminder to all handrail and guard manufacturers, in June 2017 ICC-ES approved significant revisions to AC273, Acceptance Criteria for Handrails and Guards. NADRA recommends if you have an evaluation or code report for your product in accordance with this acceptance criteria you should contact the agency providing the report on how these changes will affect you.
In addition, due to these changes in AC 273, your Code Committee is interested in your input for discussing possible similar updates to AC174.

Making NADRA top of mind as we head into 2018
As I sit here typing this, I’m looking out my window. Palm trees and Christmas lights. Gosh, I love Florida this time of year. Our short winter consists of a 68 degree high and 48 degree low cold front. My son is on the back deck screaming “GO AWAY COLD FRONT, GO AWAY! Mom, when will it be summer again?” Kid, you wouldn’t last a day up North. (shaking my head.)
For those of you that don’t know me, I’m Heather. My role with NADRA is everything marketing, communications, programs and events. We are a tight-knit group at NADRA Headquarters. Actually, we are family. Most of my family is located in Pennsylvania, just North of the Philadelphia area. I’m the lucky (or smart) one that lives on the West coast of Florida, in the beautiful, small town of Venice

What inspired you to join NADRA? Such a great group of people and the ability to help support the only group that promotes growth and expansion to our trade!
When did you first get involved with this industry? Summer 2008
What was the first thing you ever built? I started building log homes and timber construction professionally. The first build project I ever took on was a deck build on my own home.
We want to get to know you, please tell us a little about your business: My business is DOCK & DECK. We specialize in marine construction, decks, and outdoor living spaces. I started my company in 2008. We currently do about 20 Decks a year and about 16-24 docks a year. It is a family business that I started and now have both my sons working with me one full time and one part time.
How do you define success? I define success as happiness. If I enjoy what I have and what I do I am very successful. Success is not about how much money you have. It is all about how happy you are day to day.
What advice would you like to share with fellow members that you have learned in your career? Each and everyone of the members bring a unique quality to the table. Share your knowledge and experiences and help the industry continue to grow. The biggest thing we can do as members is help showcase what we do and continue to bring youth into the field. Good quality construction is hard to find so share with others how you made it to this point
If you could ask your fellow industry professionals one question, what might it be? What would you do differently or what was your biggest mistake in business? How did you overcome that?
What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this? I would run a charter fishing boat at a beach/ocean somewhere warm year round.
A little more about Jason: I am a very outdoors kind of guy. I enjoy spending my time outside with my family and friends. I have a pilots license, a motorcycle licenses, a captains (large boats) license, and enjoy all types of car and trucks. If it moves I like to operate it. My family is a huge part of my life and I get to work with them daily. Over the past two years besides running my business I have been the star in a TV show DOCKED OUT on DIY with Scripps Network and continue to work on new shows to share currently. Wife and kids are a part of the show as it focuses on what we do and how we run the business throughout the build process. I reside in Knoxville, TN.

Acclaimed deck builders and industry enthusiasts from around the world traveled to Nashville, TN for the Remodeling show, DeckExpo and JLC Live (RDJ) at the end of last month. NADRA held several events while in Nashville. Below is a recap from each exciting event.
NADRA CPAC Meeting: 10/25/17
NADRA’s Consumer Product Awareness Charter Committee met on Wednesday morning prior to the golf tournament in Nashville. The CPAC Committee works to develop and implement consumer friendly labeling programs for outdoor living products. The committee presented details to a room full of NADRA Manufacturer members regarding its mission and accomplishments over the last 5 years.
The overall intent of this program is to provide the consumer with a simple, straightforward labeling program to assist in their product selection.
A recognized label will accompany easy to understand product performance measurements to educate consumers so they can make more knowledgeable product selections.
“This meeting was a great opportunity to discuss CPAC with a large audience of mfrs. Many misconceptions about the CPAC program were addressed. I hope everyone heard how CPAC makes sense and helps everyone improve sales, reduces friction costs and elevates the entire industry. ” says Committee Chair, Andrew Clements

What inspired you to join NADRA? I have been in the BM industry for many years, mainly as a manufacturers representative. When I opened my business, I knew the value of being a member of NADRA and believe wholeheartedly in the message. I am passionate about the decking industry and try to instill that when meeting with potential customers.
When did you first get involved with this industry? 2001 as a sales rep in a lumberyard
What was the first thing you ever built? The first thing inbuilt was a dog house for my dog – Jordan. I was 14. This was a piece of art.
We want to get to know you, please tell us a little about your business: I started Western Sky Designs in 2015, primarily as a design and consultation company to earn extra income. As I went through the process, I realized my experience with many manufacturers would translate nicely into a full time career. Our specialty is custom decks, rail, and shade structures. We are passionate about building decks correctly and safely. This year we will build about 30 decks. In addition to patio covers and custom
pergolas. We will also complete 5-10 basements per year.
How do you define success? Success to me is personal relationships with my family and my friends. I have spent a lot of time on airplanes and traveling to help companies succeed. But at the end of the day, relationships with the people who I care about the most is the most important.
What advice would you like to share with fellow members that you have learned in your career? We aren’t competing against one another – we are building an industry. Let’s work together and help each other.
If you could ask your fellow industry professionals one question, what might it be? What kind of beer do you drink? Can I get you one?
What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this? I’d probably be selling decking related products!
A little more about Brian: Most importantly, I am a father to my wonderful kids, Colby and Macy. And a best friend to Stacy, Luca and Rocco. I am a die hard Michigan Wolverines Fanatic! GO BLUE! During the winter months, I am a High School and NCAA wrestling official. I travel to several tournaments throughout the country promoting wrestling. I wrestled my entire youth life and this is the way I stay connected. I have a bird dog named Dixie, she is an American Brittany. We love hunting upland game birds in North Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado. I wish I had more time to do that. Lastly, I try to travel as much as possible. The best trip ever was with my best friend, Stacy, to Africa. We went to Botswana for a couple different safari trips, as well as, South Africa. We plan to do more trips in the future.
