Through this ongoing relationship, NADRA and VisionScape strive to unify the outdoor living community by providing NADRA’s professional, dealer, retailer and manufacturer members highly effective 3D design, presentation, sales and marketing tools.

The heart of this growing partnership lies in VisionScape’s 3D design and visualization software, Virtual Property Architect™, which allows for the creation of lifelike 3D designs and detailed 2D plans that can be saved as interactive, online sales presentations for the consumer.

“When a consumer can experience exactly how a finished project will look and feel right in their own backyard, and in advance of construction, we see more frequent and larger sales”, observes VisionScape Founder and CEO John Porco. “We have partnered with NADRA to equip the industry with the tools it needs to provide consumers this experience and increase the number of outdoor living projects completed each year.”

VisionScape 3D designs are created from an ever-expanding 3D catalogue of actual products and brands from throughout the industry. The designs can be shared online with vivid screenshots, walkthrough videos, images and the 2D plan to create an immersive customer experience.

“The exciting products and technologies available today in decking, railing, fencing, landscaping, patio pavers, pool and spa as well as landscape lighting, now have the ability to come alive with a simple point and click,” explains NADRA Executive Vice President Michael Beaudry. “This partnership not only enables our members to provide a superior customer experience, it also unifies each segment of the outdoor living industry.”

“NADRA is extremely excited about the partnership with VisionScape”, says Bill Ross, NADRA President “VisionScape is a robust, best-in-class software, with a super quick learning curve, that allows builders to visualize the entire backyard environment for the consumer so that the builder’s creative vision can be seen in its fullness. Participating NADRA members can expect a differentiating competitive advantage, realize a significant increase in sales closing rates and gain access to new streams of revenue.”

NADRA Atlanta Chapter Meeting Re-Cap

NADRA Atlanta Chapter Meeting Re-Cap

February 2013

We opened up the New Year with our initial meeting held at the Ivey in Buckhead last Tuesday February 19th.  It was a great turnout; we had 40 attendees and it was a very strong showing of our Deck Builder members. I want to thank Scott Sheppard and Dave Raught with Great Southern for sponsoring the meeting and for their presentation on Great Southern product offerings with a focus on the Timbertech line and a presentation by Chad Hall.  Our Guest speaker for the evening was Tommy Howard, The President of the North Atlanta Residential Division of the Norton Agency.  Tommy did a great job in presenting an overview of the Atlanta Housing Market and worked his presentation around 5 things that we need to know for the upcoming year.  It was very encouraging information and if all goes well it will benefit our members as we move through the year.

We started off the evening by holding an election for our new Board Position – The office of Treasurer.  Mike Reasons of DeckSouth was elected to the position and we look forward to his input and involvement throughout the year.  I also had an opportunity to present the Committee Chairs for the upcoming year; New Member – Greg Mizerak & Frank Pologruto / Marketing – Scott Sheppard and Bryan Miller / Deck for a Solider – David Tibbetts and Scott McCawley.  There is a lot of work to be done and I appreciate these members taking a lead role in our chapter for 2013.    We had “Five minutes with Frank” and then I had the chance to talk about the upcoming Home Show in March and NADRA Atlanta Chapter’s participation.  Please contact Scott or Bryan if you can help us out during the show.  We want to continue to put NADRA and its members in the public arena and do our best to educate the Atlanta buyer on why they should choose a NADRA member for their outdoor living projects.  This show is a great way for us to accomplish this goal so please help if you can. The show dates are March 22nd– 24th at the Cobb Galleria Center.

Our next meeting will be held on April the 16th at the Ivey  in Buckhead.  I am hoping to put together a unique event.  We are calling it “Speed Dating with Deck Builders”.   There will be an opportunity for Vendors and Dealers to buy time slots so they can present their new product offering s for 2013 to the key Deck Builder members of our chapter.  I have already received a commitment from ten of our Deck Builder members so it should be a very cost effective way to get your message out.  I will be sending more details on this in the coming weeks.  Thanks again for being a part of our Chapter and for all that each of you do to make us successful.  If our first meeting is any indication then we should all have a very successful 2013.

Respectfully Submitted,

Keith Compton / Chapter President

Two Decades of Composite Decking

Two Decades of Composite Decking

Where the industry has been and what’s next

“Plastics.”

That single word was a family friend’s business advice to recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) in the 1967 film “The Graduate.”

If the movie had come out a couple decades later, that one word of advice might have been “composites.”

Market research shows that wood-plastic composites are now one of the fastest growing segments of the North American decking industry, outpacing growth in wood decking by about 11 to 1.

Manufacturers introduced composite building materials made of recycled plastics and wood fiber in the late 1980s. Composite decking followed early in the 90s. By the new millennium, numerous companies were producing composite decking.

Two overarching trends mark the evolution of the composite decking industry over the past 20 plus years: 1) performance and 2) aesthetics.

Performance

With the rapid growth of the composites industry, early on some products came to market that were susceptible to failures – particularly from moisture intrusion. Today, composites’ performance depends to a large degree on how well the individual wood fibers are encased in plastic.

The moisture damage concern has been a key driver of the recent rise of cap-stock composite decking products, in which an outer shell is wrapped around a core.

Moving forward, the next stage in composites’ evolution is boards with caps integrated with the core. Such products hold the promise of enhanced stain resistance, without risk of the cap separating from the core.

Aesthetics

Look side-by-side at composite deck boards from 20 years ago with ones from today, and you’ll notice a marked increase in attractiveness. Composite manufacturers have improved the looks of their deck boards with realistic embossed wood grain patterns, and in some cases with color streaking to mimic the beauty of exotic hardwoods like Tiger Wood.

Even young Mr. Braddock wouldn’t have wanted a “plastic” looking deck. With modern composites, home and building owners can now have the good looks of wood decking with the high performance of wood-plastic composites.

Future aesthetic innovations in composite decking are likely to include an even wider range of colors and textures.

International Builders’ Show and Kitchen & Bath Industry Show to Co-Locate in Las Vegas Beginning in 2014

New mega-event creates nation’s largest gathering focused on all aspects of home design and construction

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 22 — The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) today announced an agreement to co-locate the International Builders’ Show (IBS) and the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas beginning in February 2014.

The two events will remain separate and distinct shows held simultaneously at the Las Vegas Convention Center through 2016, creating Design and Construction Week, one of the world’s largest gatherings focused on new ideas, products and technologies to design, build and remodel homes.

“This new format allows exhibitors to reach a full range of design and construction professionals who buy, specify and influence the products that go into American homes,” said NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg, a home builder from Gainesville, Fla. “For attendees, it means access to two expansive trade show floors and hundreds of additional suppliers to meet.”

“Two shows, two associations and one place to see and connect with every aspect of residential construction and remodeling,” said John Morgan, NKBA 2013 president and president of Morgan Pinnacle, a manufacturer’s representative for cabinetry and technology brands. “We couldn’t be more excited to deliver this special event for the industry.”

The new mega-event will be held Feb. 4-6, 2014 in Las Vegas, with each show occupying a separate hall. Kitchen and bath brands that have participated in both shows can choose to exhibit in the KBIS or IBS hall. One pass will provide access to both exhibits. NKBA and NAHB will continue to produce separate educational programming and special events. Future show dates are Jan 20-22, 2015 and Jan 19-21, 2016 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Design and Construction Week 2014 is expected to draw more than 75,000 specifiers, builders, dealers and suppliers and 2,000 exhibiting brands, based on recent trends for both shows.

IBS is the largest annual light construction show in the world with 50,000 attendees expected at the 2013 show. Builders, remodelers, developers, architects and other industry professionals from more than 100 countries attend to see the latest products and services from nearly 1,000 exhibitors in more than 200 construction categories, attend dozens of cutting-edge education sessions, visit show homes featuring the latest trends and innovations and network with peers. Now in its 69th year, IBS is organized, produced and managed exclusively by NAHB.

Held annually for the last 49 years, KBIS is the largest event in North America focused on the kitchen and bath segment, attracting more than 700 exhibitors. The 2013 show, to be held in New Orleans, April 19-21, is expected to attract more than 20,000 buyers and specifiers from more than 50 countries, as well as 300 members of the media. Attendees include dealers, designers, architects, remodelers, wholesalers and custom builders. KBIS is owned by NKBA, sponsored by K+BB magazine and produced by Nielsen Expositions.

“Co-locating IBS and KBIS will enable kitchen and bath professionals to benefit through a greater understanding and familiarity with related products, such as windows, doors, flooring, and mechanical systems, all of which are critical to overall consumer satisfaction with project outcomes,” Morgan said.

“Consumers are, indeed, the common ground between NAHB and NKBA,” Rutenberg said. “Co-locating our shows and educational conferences brings together every segment of the industry to advance our collective professionalism and expertise in serving home owners.”

In 2015, Design and Construction Week will expand further with the addition of SURFACES and StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas, Jan. 21-23 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. SURFACES is sponsored by the World Floor Covering Association and is the largest floor-covering industry event in North America for retailers, distributors, installers, designers and home builders. StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas is the only show in North America solely focused on the natural stone industry and is sponsored by the Marble Institute of America and the Natural Stone Council. Both events are produced by Hanley Wood. Shuttle buses will run between the convention centers to allow approximately 25,000 additional attendees to tour all three exhibits.

The Power of Thank You

The Power of Thank You: (thoughts from author Job Gordon)

In the spirit of Thanksgiving we would love to share with you the benefits and power of two simple words. Thank You.

They are two words that have the power to transform our health, happiness, athletic performance and success. Research shows that grateful people are happier and more likely to maintain good friendships. A state of gratitude, according to research by the Institute of HeartMath, also improves the heart’s rhythmic functioning, which helps us to reduce stress, think more clearly under pressure and heal physically. It’s actually physiologically impossible to be stressed and thankful at the same time. When you are grateful you flood your body and brain with emotions and endorphins that uplift and energize you rather than the stress hormones that drain you.

Gratitude and appreciation are also essential for a healthy work environment. In fact, the number one reason why people leave their jobs is because they don’t feel appreciated. A simple thank you and a show of appreciation can make all the difference.

Gratitude is like muscle. The more we do with it the stronger it gets. In this spirit here are 4 ways to practice Thanksgiving every day of the year.

  1. Take a Daily Thank You Walk – I wrote about this in The Energy Bus. Take a simple 10-minute walk each day and say out loud what you are thankful for. This will set you up for a positive day.
  2. Meal Time Thank You’s – On Thanksgiving, or just at dinner with your friends and family, go around the table and have each person, including the kids at the little table, say what they are thankful for.
  3. Gratitude Visit – Martin Seligman, Ph.D., the father of positive psychology, suggests that we write a letter expressing our gratitude to someone. Then we visit this person and read them the letter. His research shows that people who do this are measurably happier and less depressed a month later.
  4. Say Thank You at Work – Doug Conant, the CEO of Campbell Soup, has written over 16,000 thank you notes to his employees and energized the company in the process. Energize and engage your co-workers and team by letting them know you are grateful for them and their work. And don’t forget to say thank you to your clients and customers too.

We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We’re thankful for YOU.

NADRA NJ November Meeting Recap

Hi Everyone,

Following is a recap of November’s NADRA NJ Chapter meeting.  We had a very good meeting and we would like to thank everyone for attending.  We had an excellent turn out considering the hardships so many have endured following Hurricane Sandy.  We had a few new builders in attendance and we gladly welcomed them.   Our speaker, Darren Slaughter spoke about websites.  He gave many ideas and suggestions on how to optimize your website and get the most out of it.   We discussed where to hold the Holiday party and decided on the Verblaauw’s home.  We have a few options for Deck for A Soldier; helping out a Soldier who lost his home in the Hurricane.  We also brought up the idea of building a Deck for Recovery for an organization affected by the Hurricane.  Our sponsors for the meeting were Trex, Tim Schlosser and Doug Lind.   Thank you Tim and it was so nice that Doug flew in from Colorado to talk about Elevations.   Tim told us that Trex Accents will be discontinued, showed us the new railing that was introduced as well as a new fascia product.  Doug explained the Elevations framing.  He explained the Code approvals.  He also explained that using Elevations extend the labor warranty from 2 years to 5 years for Trex Pro contractors.  He showed us the new stair system that they have implemented for the Elevations framing.
Our next meeting is tentatively planned for Tuesday January 15, 2013.
We hope everyone has a nice holiday season!!!!
Thank you,
Judy Verblaauw

Update: ICC Action Committee Proposal

The ICC Building Code Action Committee is considering a very large proposal for deck construction provisions to be included in the 2015 IRC.  Anyone is invited to provide feedback, both opponent and proponent, on the proposal.  The committee wishes to work on the document with the industry, prior to the hearings next year.  Take a look at this proposal and see if you want these provisions to become code? Code, such that any other option is an “alternative” that has to be convinced to the building official over “just doing what the code says”.

You decide, NADRA.  What are your opinions about this?

There are some helpful provisions…and some…others.  It’s a long document…but it’s very, very serious. Code that comes out of an ICC Action Committee comes with some serious power.  Get involved and help NADRA represent our industry in the code development process.  We need you.

NADRA is positioned as the voice of the deck, dock and railing industry. Send your input toInfo@NADRA.org.
