International Builders’ Show and Kitchen & Bath Industry Show to Co-Locate in Las Vegas Beginning in 2014

New mega-event creates nation’s largest gathering focused on all aspects of home design and construction

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 22 — The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) today announced an agreement to co-locate the International Builders’ Show (IBS) and the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS) in Las Vegas beginning in February 2014.

The two events will remain separate and distinct shows held simultaneously at the Las Vegas Convention Center through 2016, creating Design and Construction Week, one of the world’s largest gatherings focused on new ideas, products and technologies to design, build and remodel homes.

“This new format allows exhibitors to reach a full range of design and construction professionals who buy, specify and influence the products that go into American homes,” said NAHB Chairman Barry Rutenberg, a home builder from Gainesville, Fla. “For attendees, it means access to two expansive trade show floors and hundreds of additional suppliers to meet.”

“Two shows, two associations and one place to see and connect with every aspect of residential construction and remodeling,” said John Morgan, NKBA 2013 president and president of Morgan Pinnacle, a manufacturer’s representative for cabinetry and technology brands. “We couldn’t be more excited to deliver this special event for the industry.”

The new mega-event will be held Feb. 4-6, 2014 in Las Vegas, with each show occupying a separate hall. Kitchen and bath brands that have participated in both shows can choose to exhibit in the KBIS or IBS hall. One pass will provide access to both exhibits. NKBA and NAHB will continue to produce separate educational programming and special events. Future show dates are Jan 20-22, 2015 and Jan 19-21, 2016 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Design and Construction Week 2014 is expected to draw more than 75,000 specifiers, builders, dealers and suppliers and 2,000 exhibiting brands, based on recent trends for both shows.

IBS is the largest annual light construction show in the world with 50,000 attendees expected at the 2013 show. Builders, remodelers, developers, architects and other industry professionals from more than 100 countries attend to see the latest products and services from nearly 1,000 exhibitors in more than 200 construction categories, attend dozens of cutting-edge education sessions, visit show homes featuring the latest trends and innovations and network with peers. Now in its 69th year, IBS is organized, produced and managed exclusively by NAHB.

Held annually for the last 49 years, KBIS is the largest event in North America focused on the kitchen and bath segment, attracting more than 700 exhibitors. The 2013 show, to be held in New Orleans, April 19-21, is expected to attract more than 20,000 buyers and specifiers from more than 50 countries, as well as 300 members of the media. Attendees include dealers, designers, architects, remodelers, wholesalers and custom builders. KBIS is owned by NKBA, sponsored by K+BB magazine and produced by Nielsen Expositions.

“Co-locating IBS and KBIS will enable kitchen and bath professionals to benefit through a greater understanding and familiarity with related products, such as windows, doors, flooring, and mechanical systems, all of which are critical to overall consumer satisfaction with project outcomes,” Morgan said.

“Consumers are, indeed, the common ground between NAHB and NKBA,” Rutenberg said. “Co-locating our shows and educational conferences brings together every segment of the industry to advance our collective professionalism and expertise in serving home owners.”

In 2015, Design and Construction Week will expand further with the addition of SURFACES and StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas, Jan. 21-23 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. SURFACES is sponsored by the World Floor Covering Association and is the largest floor-covering industry event in North America for retailers, distributors, installers, designers and home builders. StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas is the only show in North America solely focused on the natural stone industry and is sponsored by the Marble Institute of America and the Natural Stone Council. Both events are produced by Hanley Wood. Shuttle buses will run between the convention centers to allow approximately 25,000 additional attendees to tour all three exhibits.

New Jersey Deck Association Seeks Award Entries, Sponsors
The New Jersey chapter of the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) has announced its annual Deck Competition and Awards ceremony, to be held February 21, at Ariana’s Grand, in Woodbridge, New Jersey.
Chapter President Martin Coffey has issued a call for entries for the 5th annual awards, which recognize deck builders in a variety of categories, including natural and alternative decking, deck illumination, and special deck features. To be eligible for awards, a builder need only be a member of the non-profit association. All entries must have been completed in New Jersey within the last two years. You can enter the competition by downloading and submitting the forms found HERE.
Coffey said the chapter is currently seeking sponsors for the ceremony. Sponsor benefits include many levels of marketing opportunity, and recognition at the event. The Power of Thank You

The Power of Thank You: (thoughts from author Job Gordon)

In the spirit of Thanksgiving we would love to share with you the benefits and power of two simple words. Thank You.

They are two words that have the power to transform our health, happiness, athletic performance and success. Research shows that grateful people are happier and more likely to maintain good friendships. A state of gratitude, according to research by the Institute of HeartMath, also improves the heart’s rhythmic functioning, which helps us to reduce stress, think more clearly under pressure and heal physically. It’s actually physiologically impossible to be stressed and thankful at the same time. When you are grateful you flood your body and brain with emotions and endorphins that uplift and energize you rather than the stress hormones that drain you.

Gratitude and appreciation are also essential for a healthy work environment. In fact, the number one reason why people leave their jobs is because they don’t feel appreciated. A simple thank you and a show of appreciation can make all the difference.

Gratitude is like muscle. The more we do with it the stronger it gets. In this spirit here are 4 ways to practice Thanksgiving every day of the year.

  1. Take a Daily Thank You Walk – I wrote about this in The Energy Bus. Take a simple 10-minute walk each day and say out loud what you are thankful for. This will set you up for a positive day.
  2. Meal Time Thank You’s – On Thanksgiving, or just at dinner with your friends and family, go around the table and have each person, including the kids at the little table, say what they are thankful for.
  3. Gratitude Visit – Martin Seligman, Ph.D., the father of positive psychology, suggests that we write a letter expressing our gratitude to someone. Then we visit this person and read them the letter. His research shows that people who do this are measurably happier and less depressed a month later.
  4. Say Thank You at Work – Doug Conant, the CEO of Campbell Soup, has written over 16,000 thank you notes to his employees and energized the company in the process. Energize and engage your co-workers and team by letting them know you are grateful for them and their work. And don’t forget to say thank you to your clients and customers too.

NADRA NJ November Meeting Recap

Hi Everyone,

Following is a recap of November’s NADRA NJ Chapter meeting.  We had a very good meeting and we would like to thank everyone for attending.  We had an excellent turn out considering the hardships so many have endured following Hurricane Sandy.  We had a few new builders in attendance and we gladly welcomed them.   Our speaker, Darren Slaughter spoke about websites.  He gave many ideas and suggestions on how to optimize your website and get the most out of it.   We discussed where to hold the Holiday party and decided on the Verblaauw’s home.  We have a few options for Deck for A Soldier; helping out a Soldier who lost his home in the Hurricane.  We also brought up the idea of building a Deck for Recovery for an organization affected by the Hurricane.  Our sponsors for the meeting were Trex, Tim Schlosser and Doug Lind.   Thank you Tim and it was so nice that Doug flew in from Colorado to talk about Elevations.   Tim told us that Trex Accents will be discontinued, showed us the new railing that was introduced as well as a new fascia product.  Doug explained the Elevations framing.  He explained the Code approvals.  He also explained that using Elevations extend the labor warranty from 2 years to 5 years for Trex Pro contractors.  He showed us the new stair system that they have implemented for the Elevations framing.
Our next meeting is tentatively planned for Tuesday January 15, 2013.

Update: ICC Action Committee Proposal

The ICC Building Code Action Committee is considering a very large proposal for deck construction provisions to be included in the 2015 IRC.  Anyone is invited to provide feedback, both opponent and proponent, on the proposal.  The committee wishes to work on the document with the industry, prior to the hearings next year.  Take a look at this proposal and see if you want these provisions to become code? Code, such that any other option is an “alternative” that has to be convinced to the building official over “just doing what the code says”.

You decide, NADRA.  What are your opinions about this?

There are some helpful provisions…and some…others.  It’s a long document…but it’s very, very serious. Code that comes out of an ICC Action Committee comes with some serious power.  Get involved and help NADRA represent our industry in the code development process.  We need you.

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – National Nail Corp.’s CAMO Hidden Deck Fasteners were used in the construction of two decks that took first place in NADRA’s Third Annual National Deck Competition in the 2012 Best Dock and the 2012 Best Covered Deck categories.

NADRA hosted their Third Annual National Deck Competition Awards Ceremony on October 10. Attendees included NADRA members and guests, NADRA’s National Board of Directors, local Chapter Directors, along with many other industry professionals. The competition was open to NADRA builder members from across the United States and Canada. Finalists were selected by an elite panel andjudged on creativity, use of space and functionality, use of materials, andoverall visual appeal.

“From reading the descriptions that accompany the entries, it’s clear that these NADRA members put a tremendous amount of planning and thought into each project,” said Rick Schumacher, one of the panel judges and Publisher of LBM Journal. “I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again–there are a lot of Associations that serve the residential construction industry, but few if any can match NADRA’s energy, passion and commitment. It’s a great thing to be a part of.”

The 2012 Best Dock was submitted by Jon Witt of Witt’s Woods and Greens in Ontario, Canada. The dock was built using CAMO Hidden Fasteners and a variety of materials including Douglas Fir, Hemlock, Cedar and AZEK® PVC decking. The dock curves out from the shoreline in a wave-like pattern, and the deckboards are laid in a beautiful 45-degree angle pattern.

The 2012 Best Covered Deck was submitted by Rick Goldstein of the Mosaic Group, Inc. in Georgia. The project involved removing an existing deck and building a larger deck that includes a screened in porch, outdoor kitchen and living area. This deck was built using CAMO Hidden Fasteners and Gossen® Passport PVC decking.

At DeckExpo Memphis in 2006 I accepted the responsibility to become a member of the board of directors. Looking back now, I realize that I had no idea what was involved but I was honored to represent you and give back to this industry that has done so much for me and my family. There were times for me early in this business where people would question the idea of a company that specialized in decks. I saw NADRA as a way to show that our industry was truly professional and a good career choice. As I look back over the past 7 years I can see that NADRA has come along way and accomplished what many thought was not possible. There has been some ups and downs with learning along the way but NADRA has truly stood on the shoulders of those before us and without the work of previous board members and the efforts of Michael and his family, NADRA would not be where it is today.

I leave you with a challenge… to say the same thing only different. Our businesses, our industry, and this association are in a position to take ourselves to a whole new level but it is up to each of you to make that happen. We need new words to reach consumers and show them the value of NADRA. Can you imagine the power we could have if the homeowner sitting across the table starts asking if you are a NADRA member or if you are selling NADRA approved products? This has always been my view of how NADRA can best help the industry and you can really see the pieces coming together…the work NADRA is doing in codes, accreditation classes, material testing, Check Your Deck, Deck for a Soldier…these are all tools that are in place and give us the words to say the same thing only different to better reach the home owner. Just think of the difference for us all if we make that happen. If you noticed in the video it really wasn’t a beautiful day…street was wet, they were wearing jackets but the message was right. It is time for NADRA to become more – not only for ourselves but for the industry as a whole and for the consumers who want more out of a contractor. The consumer who deserves to get what they paid for and are willing to pay more when they see the value. Now that you are home from Baltimore back to your families and your work I want you to answer the call like I did 7 years ago to go out and say the same thing only different…it is time to make a difference

Remodeling Projects Are Back!

February 2, 2011 | After years of shelving projects and doing only improvements deemed absolutely necessary, more homeowners are dusting off their remodeling plans this year as they grow more hopeful about the economy.

And given that many contractors are still willing to slash their prices to get new business, it could be a good time to get projects done for a low price.

For remodeling, it’s a buyer’s market, says Paul Zuch, president of Capital Improvements, a remodeling firm in Dallas, and president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.

During the downturn, Mr. Zuch’s company lowered profit margins in order to stay competitive with not only other established remodelers but also home builders who began to dabble in remodeling when demand almost completely dried up for new homes.

In fact, 80% of the 554 home-improvement contractors who participated in a recent Angie’s List survey said they would slash prices to win a bid — with some saying they’d drop their price by as much as 20%.
