Dec. Meeting Recap From Atlanta Chapter President

Excerpt taken from the weekly NADRA Industry Brief

December 21, 2010 | Thanks to everyone that attended Tuesday night’s Atlanta NADRA Chapter meeting at the Soho.

Special thanks go out to Timbertech for their generous sponsorship of what I believe to be one of our best meetings to date. Bill Georgelis and James Gunning teamed up to make a very informative presentation of their decking products and market forecast.

We had a full house which included several very special guests. Terry and Diann Dempsey, the founders of Deck Expo and Professional Deck Builder Magazine were in attendance. John Mortimer, the first President of NADRA was present along with our 2010 “Deck for a Soldier” customers, Captain Don Thompson and his wife Dana.

Michael Beaudry, NADRA’s Executive Vice President of NADRA was our keynote speaker and gave a great presentation and really helped strengthen the local and national membership connection.

Ginny Tibbetts, of Atlanta Decking and Fence Company, who has been the secretary and treasurer for our chapter since it’s inception, received a recognition award for her valuable contributions to the Atlanta Chapter. Ginny has devoted countless hours to our cause and has provided a lot of behind the scenes leadership. Her enthusiasm, willingness to help, and general wisdom have served this chapter beyond what any can realize. Keith Compton, who headed up our 2010 Deck for a Soldier campaign, was recognized for his contributions as well. Keith has been a valuable asset for our chapter and has put in a tremendous amount of time and effort to complete our first DFS effort.

NADRA Georgia Chapter Christmas Party a success!

Excerpt taken from the weekly NADRA Industry Brief

Decmeber 15, 2010 | In total, close to 65 NADRA members, wives and family were in attendance at the Soho Atlanta Restaurant in Vinings for the Georgia Chapter’s Christmas Party. Among the guests were Michael Beaudry, NADRA’s Executive Vice President. Mr. Beaudry passionately introduced several very special guests of the night, including our very own Terry and Diann Dempsey – founders of DeckExpo and PDB Magazine, along with NADRA’s very first President, Mr. John Mortimer. As if the guests couldn’t get any better, the Georgia Chapter Board of Directors arranged for Srgt. Thomas and his wife, recipients of this years Deck for a Soldier project to attend the event so that the local members could thank them just one more time!

The event wouldn’t have happened without the support from NADRA member, TimberTech – thank you for sponsoring a great night!

The local chapter took this time to award two very special NADRA members. The first, Ginny Tibbetts for her time, passion and effort with the local chapter. The second was Keith Compton, who was thanked for the time and energy he put in to spearhead the Chapters 2010 Deck for a Soldier project.

A special thanks goes out to Bobby Smith, NADRA Georgia Chapter’s first president – for without his extraordinary efforts in developing one of NADRA’s most successful chapters, the evening would not have been possible. Thank you, Bobby for getting us to where we are today!

In the end, the entire room was filled with the spirit of Christmas, thanks for what we can all accomplish together, and roughly 4-5 brand new distributor members of NADRA! Wow!

We feel very blessed to have so many great people involved with our industry association!

Please look forward to a full recap and photos in the weeks ahead!

A Surprise Gift for a Soldier’s Family

Originally posted on 11Alive.com

Altanta, GA – October 16, 2010 | It’s the story of the beautiful harmony between a husband and wife who have handled adversity with the utmost grace – and the people so inspired by it that they helped bring this family a wonderful surprise. Dana Thompson will be the first to tell you: it’s never been easy keeping up with four kids while her husband serves in the army.

“My grandfather was in World War II,” said Captain Don Thompson. “Actually, both grandfathers were. My dad was an Air Force captain.”

Don felt the same calling and enlisted just in time to be sent to Iraq in 2004; he so appreciated the experience that he decided to go into a military career. He served another tour last year, this time in Afghanistan, and now works in Macon; he commutes two hours each way from Cumming every day. And it’s obvious why.

“When he comes home, it’s just, ‘Aaaah!'” says Dana Thompson. “Utter excitement …”

It’s hard for Don to be away, as well as for Dana to handle the home — or, at least, it should be. But the couple has stuck to the belief that the bonds of family beat the strains of distance every time.

“If I’m not in the field or completely indisposed and can’t talk, I call her every night,” Don says. “It doesn’t matter where I am; I’ll find a way.”

It’s why they made a tape of Don reading bedtime stories, so his kids could still hear his voice when he was overseas. And it’s why, a few months back, Dana wrote an essay whose voice would carry far wider than she ever expected. It was an essay for a contest run by “Operation Homefront”, a non-profit out of Marietta that supports veterans and their families. They been had approached by NADRA, the North American Deck and Railing Association, for a new campaign called “Deck for a Soldier”. In Georgia, they all read Dana’s essay and found their soldier. So for a week-and-a-half, they got to work, building a front porch and a two-level deck, with 32 local companies volunteering to help.
