NADRA Atlanta October 2012 Meeting Re-Cap

NADRA Atlanta Chapter Meeting Re-Cap                                                                                              October 2012

Thanks to all who attended the NADRA Atlanta Chapter meeting this past Monday evening at the Ivy in Buckhead.  We had 60+ attendees and many guests from the Principia Conference.  I want to thank Larry Pease with Trex for sponsoring the meeting and for a great presentation.  Our guest speaker was Ryan Magnon the Senior Manager, Hospitality and Service Design, Chick-Fil-A.   Ryan gave us a great presentation and left us with some new ideas on how to brand our companies and provide superior customer service.

I had the opportunity to review the recent Deck Expo Show and highlighted many of the things that went on at show this year including our recent National meeting.  Our own Bobby Parks is the new Vice president of the National Board so please congratulate him next time you see him and He can fill you in on any of the “happenings” with NADRA national.  We had four Atlanta members that attended the Master Deck Certification classes; David Tibbetts (Atlanta Decking & Fence), Frank Pologruto (Decks & More), John Lea (DeckSouth), and Craig Jacks (Nyloboard).  We also had several members that participated and won some of the National Deck Awards; John Paulin (Tailor Decks) won three awards, Rick Goldstein (Mosaic Group) won two awards, John Lea (DeckSouth) won two awards, and Frank Pologruto (Decks & More) won two awards.  Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to all who participated

Rich Phillips (Decks By Design) spoke to the group about a HomeAid Atlanta project that we are undertaking in the coming weeks in South Atlanta.   HomeAid is nonprofit group that is affiliated with the Atlanta Home Builders association and they provide transitional housing for the homeless in Atlanta.  We are beginning to coordinate some of our efforts with the Atlanta HBA and this is the second project that we will be working with them on.  Please contact Rich or myself if you can help us with materials or labor.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday– December the 12th.  This is our Big Year End Event and we are holding at Maggiano’s – Cumberland Mall location.  Arch will be our sponsor and we are still working on our guest speaker.  This is our time to look at the year past and to plan for the coming year – we need a big attendance so please put it on your calendars and note that Spouses are encouraged to attend.  We will also be putting together a “Toys for Tots” drive at the meeting – details to follow. Thanks again to all the out of town guests that took their time to join us – we loved having you and hope you can join us again anytime you are able.

Respectfully Submitted                                                                                                            Keith Compton / Chapter President

NADRA 2012 Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner Announced

NADRA Announces Biggest Industry Event of The Year to be Held at the American Visionary Art Museum, October 10th, 2012 in Baltimore, MD

August 8, 2012  – Quakertown, PA| Today, The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) launched registration for the 2012 main event being held in conjunction with DeckExpo. The big night includes a cocktail reception, annual meeting, industry awards, silent auction, dinner, deck competition & the well-known after-party with a live performance at the Hard Rock Café. Registration for this ticketed event is now open at www.NADRA.org.

What might seem like a party to some is the most significant fundraiser of the year for NADRA. Much weighs on the outcome of this leading industry event.  Participation from industry professionals is essential to the growth of the association.

NADRA’s main event will take place at Baltimore’s American Visionary Art Museum at 800 Key Highway, Baltimore, MD 21230 at 5:30pm on Wednesday, October 10th, 2012.

NADRA Builder Member, Sean McAleer from Deck Remodelers tells NADRA “My entire team looks forward to this event, especially my lead guys that have some skin in the game. There will be six of us in Baltimore to attend the Awards.  We wait all year for it! Everyone wants bragging rights to having built an award winner!”

During the annual meeting, current members will vote in new directors. You can see and hear the “Year in Review” to learn about the state of your industry and your association’s involvement. Gain important insight into leading industry programs like Deck Safety Month, Deck for a Soldier and NADRA’s Master Deck Professional Certification program.  NADRA will also announce the 2012 recipient of the Terry Award, which recognizes industry leaders for their outstanding contributions to the decking industry and the association.

Following the meeting, guests are invited to tour the exhibits at the museum. Dinner will be served on the 3rd floor of the museum. Before the night ends, NADRA will announce the winners of the 2012 National Deck Competition.

Following the event at the American Visionary Art Museum, and while the night is still young; guests are invited across the water to celebrate like rock stars at The Hard Rock Café with a live performance by The New Romance.

“It’s not often we have the opportunity to get together as an industry” said Michael Beaudry, Executive V.P of NADRA. “The annual meeting is a chance for the industry to come together, meet, greet and motivate each other and to make the spirit surrounding the night last throughout the year.”

Early bird pricing is now available. Go to www.NADRA.org to get in on the action before it’s sold out.  This is an event you don’t want to miss!

NADRA NJ Chapter – D4S Volunteers Needed!

August 1, 2011 | Hello everyone!

I hope you are all beating the heat and having a wonderful summer!

I know a bunch of us had an overwhelming response to helping out a soldier whom lost both legs to a roadside bomb in Afghanistan when we first heard about it at a previous NADRA meeting. Yes, I do know this is our busy time of the year and believe me, I could use an extra few hours, let alone a few days. However, I plan to help out no matter what. This soldier sacrificed his life for OUR freedom. One or two days out of my life fails to compare to what Lt. Colin Pascik (23 years old) gave up to keep America safe.

This time, the build will not be as labor intensive. Homes for our Troops has already poured the footings and framed the 11′ x 32′ deck (not to mention getting all of the inspections, etc). We just need to do the ramp, decking, and railings. Also, this time the ramp is much easier as it is a 30′ straight ramp. We are working on getting the rest of the the material donated. I believe Azek was already at this job site for the decking. We certainly have a lot of railing companies involved with NADRA also (I know Phoenix would love to donate railings and volunteers to install too), so railings will not be a problem. We just need some volunteers!!! Everything is ready to go. The home is in Monroe Township and the official ribbon cutting is in September, so we need to get this completed at the latest by mid August. I would like to schedule our part of the build to start Aug 8th if we can get all of our materials in time.

Here is a tentative list of what we need:
   • Volunteers!
   • Roughly 450 sq ft of decking
   • Fasteners for decking
   • Roughly 110 lf of railing
   • 80 lf of 1-1/2″ round handrail with hardware
   • Possibly some more footings
   • Concrete
   • Possibly some 4×4’s and other pt wood

Please respond to me and let me know if you are still interested in volunteering or donating. This WILL happen but I would love it if the NADRA NJ Chapter can get it done! Remember, this is the first year our chapter has not done a Deck for a Soldier!!!!

It has been one of the most fulfilling and inspirational programs that I have personally ever been involved with. I know those that have already been involved feel the same way. We hope to have some new volunteers this year. This really should be a very quick build. So we are only talking a few days for the build. Will you help? Please spread the word on this. Forward this e-mail to as many people as you can. I have a new hosting service and have not had the chance to update my e-mails to include all of my old NADRA contacts.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Sheridan

Driving Decking Demand in the R&R Market

Hot Topic Session #1 — Monday morning, October 3, 2011

August 1, 2011 | Number of Decks Built or Replaced in 2010 Drops 37% From 2006

The decking and railing industry is hurting. Homeowners are not currently building or replacing decks at levels seen in the mid 2000s. Principia’s most recent report shows the total number of decks built on residential homes decreased from 4.3 million in 2006 to 2.7 million in 2010, a 37% drop. As a consequence, the total demand for decking and railing materials has fallen similarly.

Such a drop in demand affects all companies in the value chain, including:
   • Builders and contractors
   • Dealers and retailers
   • Wholesale distributors
   • Manufacturers of decking, railing, fastener and accessories
   • Raw material suppliers

The decking and railing industry can sit back and wait for some type of economic recovery to occur or the industry can take an aggressive, proactive role in helping to create more decking demand.

How?

One proven way is through consumer awareness of deck safety and aggressive marketing to home owner associations. According to the North American Decking and Railing Association (NADRA), there are 40 million existing decks and the age of over half of these decks is 20 years or more. Many of these are unsafe and need to be replaced.
