Decking Industry Pros:
As you all know me, I’ll promise to cut right to the chase and tell you what I’m thinking without adding time consuming pleasantries,

Previously and at my request, Michael Beaudry sent you a letter and presentation on our CPAC program concept (If you can’t find it, let us know). In that letter and presentation there were details of how the CPAC program will take shape and why it is important to our industry. This program stems from a basic discussion at a Principia Conference involving standardizing test protocols. During this discussion, I took on the challenge along with NADRA’s help to begin to develop this program into what it is today. It’s not rocket science, it simply takes what you are doing already, steamlines it for you, put’s it into a nifty program with a big fat rubber stamp from your industry, and allows your customers to see that you are responsible.

As an outdoor living contractor and owner of a retail building supply, I have an understanding of the need to have this program. Guys, when it comes down to your products, there is no program that certifies what you tell us about them is true. There is no way of knowing that the product has met the specs, and there is no way of knowing if what we are repeating to our customer is factual information. I am not implying that anyone here is lying about board performance or test data, but let’s say someone was. How would that have an effect on my business? On yours? On our industry? It has happened before, and all of you have reps who say the other guys stuff is crap because of this, this, and that….. It’s time for those days to end.

Over the years, we have seen a multitude of product enter the industry and fail. We have seen a multitude of “garage extruders” make up their own rules and compete. I have seen decking that came apart, disintegrated, faded to white, or just plain looks like garbage after a few years. All those companies promised me that they had a good product and have good test data. And, yes, I am seeing this today in capstocks.

I am asking YOU to help us. To help yourselves. My committee needs money to get this program off the ground. We need it to pay for Jeri and her work, to prepare the materials to boost the program, to set up the process. Guys, WE (you and us) need this program. Please don’t wait to see who’s in before committing, please help pull the rope and get on board now. I have already pledged money and have pumped time into this over the past 3 years.

I am asking this of you not only as a friend, an industry colleague, or expert in the industry. I am asking this of you as a customer, and most of all, a responsible deck builder.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or to discuss your role in the committee and program. If you are not the right person, tell me who is and I’ll beat their door down. We are going to have a meeting at Deck Expo about this as well. Information will be shared with you so you may attend.

Now you can see why I normally ask Michael to speak for me. He softens it a bit.

Thanks Guys,

David Elenbaum

NADRA August 2015 Atlanta Chapter Meeting Re-Cap

NADRA Atlanta Chapter Meeting Re-Cap

August 2015

Our guest speaker from Constant Contact showcased the third meeting of 2015 taking place at the Ivy in Buckhead, GA.  There were 27 members and guests in attendance.  The meeting was held on August 18, 2015.

During the meeting the previous minutes were read and approved along with the anit-trust statement.  Nominations were made for the new board to include Mike Reasons as President, Joey Matthews for Vice-President, Joel Mooneyhan for Secretary and Kevin Waters for treasurer.  Voting for the new board will take place in the October meeting.

James Gunning spoke about the DeckExpo show and provided class, education and social information.  He also discussed NADRA’s main event and the National Deck Competition.  Several members of the Atlanta Chapter plan to attend.

Joey Matthews gave an update on the Deck for A Soldier project and all material and labor donations were finalized during the meeting.  The build, which is set to happen on Oct 1st, should be another great opportunity for us all to serve.

Main sponsors for the meeting was Southeastern Underdecking and iLighting.  Sean Ryan discussed a very detailed presentation on the new products from iLighting and benefits of their system.  Joey Mooneyhan discussed the benefits of using Southeastern Underdecking to keep a space below the deck dry.  They have many products that can help to finish out the normally unused area under the deck.

Demming Bass from Constant Contact gave us a very informative presentations and discussion on how to use Constant Contact to change the way we do our marketing.  His ideas on how to specifically use the service in the decking industry will prove to be helpful for many of our members.  Demming also discussed the partnership with NADRA and how we can save money.

The next meeting will be held at the Ivy Buckhead on Tuesday Oct 20th.

Respectfully Submitted,

James Gunning, Atlanta Chapter President

July 2015 NADRA New Jersey Meeting Recap

From the NADRA NJ President:

We had a successful meeting on Tuesday night, July 21st. The chapter was well mixed with builders, manufacturers, distributors and lumber yards. Actually, we were skewed higher in builder attendance which was pleasing since it was a concern of some meetings in the past. We had a standard of about 20-25 people in attendance. Following the introductions and reading of the Anti-trust, Judy, the chapter secretary asked for approval of our last emailed meeting minutes and Gus updated the chapter on a treasurer’s report.

A big thanks to Walter & Wendy Jones from Artisan Builders Guild, for sponsoring our July meeting.  They spent time explaining what Artisan Builders Guild offers the market and then spent time reviewing a line they offer called Arcadia Pergolas. They went over the features and benefits of the product and talked about the mechanics and installation of the system. They presented some beautiful pictures to demonstrate some of the opportunities that exist when it comes to louvered pergolas. Great presentation!

Following the ABG presentation, Tommy Hilcken, owner of Toolbox Talent took the floor. He went into great detail about public speaking and how we can look to enhance our selling abilities on an everyday basis. He asked some great questions like, how do we connect with our customers, how do you become memorable? He mentioned what do you and don’t you like about public speaking.  He did say that public speaking is a learned skill. When speaking publically we need a memorable, compelling presentation that raises peoples’ emotions.  And that public speaking just “is”.

Tina Breen of MRS from our fun committee said she was going to put together a survey regarding fun event ideas and email it over to Judy to send to the group. Judy then discussed the upcoming National Deck Competition and upcoming NADRA events in Chicago.

Our next meeting will be held on September 15th. Thanks again to our sponsor and speaker!

Connecting Deck Ledgers to MPC Wood Trusses

Connecting Deck Ledgers to MPC Wood Trusses

The connection of residential deck ledgers to MPC floor trusses is not covered by the 2012 IRC (Table R507.2 and R507.2.1) that gives fastener requirements for the connection a deck ledger to a solid-sawn house band.  The ledger connection is especially difficult when the deck ledger is attached to the side of the truss because only the narrow edge of 2×4 truss chords and webs are present and not suitable for installing the typical ½-inch lag screws or bolts.  According to Professor Frank Woeste, Virginia Tech University,  it is critically important for contractors to verify the existence of a solid-sawn band joist when adding a residential deck because without verification, it’s possible for the ledger connection lag screws to only penetrate the wood sheathing, typically 15/32-inch thick.  Details for connecting a residential deck ledger to floor trusses have been updated and published by the SBCA(2015). See HERE.

Atlanta Golf Outing Brings Over 60 Industry Pros Together

NADRA’s 2015 Atlanta Golf Outing Brings Over 60 Industry Pros Together

From James Gunning, NADRA Atlanta Chapter President:

I am trilled to recap on Atlanta’s first NADRA golf outing that we had on Monday, June 15th at the Brookfield Country Club in Roswell Georgia. NADRA members showed their support despite the brutal 95-degree temperatures with 100% humidity, on a Monday during the busiest time of year…we still Had 60+ golfers attend what turned out to be a pretty competitive golfing journey.

Festivities began with a shot gun start at 1:00 in the afternoon (peak heat) – so what is the solution to proper hydration supply for the finest NADRA golfers?  20 cases of water and Powerade backed up with plenty of beer and booze of course! I want to give thanks our beverage cart sponsors PMC and Wolmanized Outdoor Wood, as well as all of our official golf outing sponsors:

  • Wolmanized Outdoor Wood
  • PMC Building Supply
  • Boise Cascade
  • Stock Building Supply
  • Screw Products, Inc.
  • Rainaway
  • FastenMaster
  • Trex
  • Fiberon
  • CoolScreens
  • ProWood
  • Metro Building Products
  • Compton Sales
  • MultiView
  • Southeastern Underdeck Systems
  • Decksouth
  • Simpson Strong Tie
  • YellaWood
  • Guardian Building Products
  • UltraLox

Without the support of all our sponsors, local chapter members and the help from NADRA HQ – the Beaudry’s, we could not have pulled off such a fun and well-attended event.

NADRA National Board Member, and active Atlanta member, Heath Bowman said, “The golf outing was great. A lot of us don’t get to see each other outside of chapter meetings. It’s fun to catch up in a different setting and have a good time with friends in the industry. It also helps create awareness. NADRA does a lot for the industry, and many of the guests who played, got a chance to see the benefits of being involved with a group like ours. Obviously, networking is a huge part of it, and all of us work hard to stand out in a very competitive industry. But even more important are the friendships beyond the word. At the end of the day, the work we do is to add enjoyment in the lives of the people we work for. Events like the golf outings are a great reminder that we can have fun while we work hard.”

We finished the evening with a wonderful southern style buffet and awards ceremony.

The blistering weather apparently helped the golf scores heat up. Two teams finished with a score of 55:

  • Team Trex
  • Team Outback

After a scorecard playoff, Team Outback was given the winners trophy with Team Trex as runners up.

  • On Hole # 3 the closest to the pin award was given to Lamar Lea of Decksouth – 20” from the hole
  • On Hole #15 the closest to the pin award was given to Blake Buckler of PMC – 42” from the hole
  • On Hole #18 the long drive award was given to Ty Nowell of Universal Forest Products   – 348 yds ( ouch! )

Several attendees told me that this golf outing was one of the best they have ever participated in; others (even the country club) could not believe that this was our first tournament.  I was so pleased to hear that the common opinion was that the event was ran extremely well and I’ve got to say, we could not have done that without the help of John Lea and Mike reasons of Decksouth. John, thanks for letting us attend your club. It was fun and I am looking forward to the next one!

See you all August 18th at the Ivy in Bulkhead meeting start at 6:00!
