We tried something different with our second meeting of the year by hosting the first “Speed Dating with Deck Builders” event at the Ivy in Buckhead. We had over 51 attendees at the meeting which included several first time visitors. I want to thank the following Deck Builder members that agreed to be at the host tables: David Tibbetts, Atlanta Decking, John Harper and Joel Harper with Leisure Time Decks, O.C. & Mary Kirk with Just Decks, Rick Goldstein and Chapin LaChance with the Mosaic Group, Mike Reasons and John Lea with DeckSouth, Frank Pologruto with Decks & More, John Paulin with Tailor Decks, Bryan Miller with OutBack Decks, and Steve Matrangos & Craig Dickerson with DeckSource.
Thanks you all so much for giving your time and giving this new idea a chance. We only have six meetings a year and this format opened up the opportunity for more of our great Vendors to get in front of the deck builder members. I would also like to thank the following Vendor members who bought “dates” for the event: Weyerhauser/ Cox, Tamko, Homeland Vinyl, Trex, Azek, Dixie Plywood, NyloBoard, MoistureShield, Fiberon and Universal Forest Products. We could not have a chapter without the ongoing support of so many members and I want to thank each of you for giving your resources to this meeting and to the chapter.
We had an opportunity to take care of normal business and to discuss forming a local code committee made up of Rick Goldstein, Steve Matrangos and Craig Dickerson. Rick and Steve both spoke to the formation of the committee and invited all members to contact them with ideas and specific topics they may want to cover. We also spoke about the National initiative for Code’s and to remind everyone to fill out the survey that is online and to contact Glenn Mathewson with any information prior to his going to the ICC meeting. We were also able to give away a number of door prizes to the contractor members because of donations from Tamko, Weyerhauser, Cox , Fiberon, Universal Forest Products, and Fortress.
Our next meeting will be held on June the 18th at the Ivey in Buckhead. Our sponsor for the meeting is Fastenmaster and we are currently looking for a guest speaker so please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks again for being a part of our Chapter and for all that each of you do to make us successful.
NADRA Atlanta Chapter – December 2012 Meeting Re-Cap
It was a great Year End event for our Chapter this past Wednesday evening at the Maggiano’s , Cumberland and thanks to all who attended. We had 70+ attendees and several guests including our “Deck For a Solider” recipients – Sergeant Michael Dickerson and his wife Jessica. I want to thank Kirk Hammond with Lonza for sponsoring the meeting and for his comments pertaining to our chapter and his involvement with the National Board. . Our guest speaker was John Gordon, The Director of Strategic Accounts for the Home Depot. John’s presentation was informative and eye opening as he related some principals of operating with Integrity and also gave insight into the current market conditions and an encouraging look toward future market direction.
We started off the evening by hearing from Jeffrey Johnson and David Elenbaum. Jeff shared information on a nonprofit that he is working on and David shared some of the directives and happenings from the recent National Board meeting. I then had the opportunity to review the past year and highlighted many of the activities and events that our Chapter participated in. We had a great year as a chapter and it was a pleasure to review all that we accomplished. I want to thank all of our sponsors during the past year: Azek (Bill Sullivan), Duradek (Norm Shafer), Fiberon (James Gunning), Trex (Larry Pease), and Lonza (Kirk Hammond). We could not have executed our plan this past year without your help and we are all grateful for each of you stepping up and contributing. We celebrated our third Deck For A Solider build and presented certificates to the 27 entities and individuals that participated. We also introduced Sergeant Dickerson and his Wife Jessica and thanked them for their service and sacrifice. I strongly believe that D4S is the best thing we do as a chapter and want to thank all of you for giving so much to this endeavor. We held our first “Toys For Tots” drive this year and it was an overwhelming success. I want to give special thanks to Frank Pologruto for putting this effort together and heading it up. Frank and I delivered close to 200 toys to the center yesterday and I am hopeful that we can make this effort an annual event.
Our next meeting will be held in February of 2013 – time, place and date to be determined. We are looking for speakers and sponsors for next year and our Leadership group will be meeting in January to put the plan together so if you are interested in sponsoring or if you have any ideas, speaker thoughts, or anything that you would like for us to focus on please contact me. Thanks again for being a part of our Chapter and for all that each of you do to make us successful.
Hoping that each of you have a Blessed and Happy Holiday Season.
Thanks to all who attended the NADRA Atlanta Chapter meeting this past Monday evening at the Ivy in Buckhead. We had 60+ attendees and many guests from the Principia Conference. I want to thank Larry Pease with Trex for sponsoring the meeting and for a great presentation. Our guest speaker was Ryan Magnon the Senior Manager, Hospitality and Service Design, Chick-Fil-A. Ryan gave us a great presentation and left us with some new ideas on how to brand our companies and provide superior customer service.
I had the opportunity to review the recent Deck Expo Show and highlighted many of the things that went on at show this year including our recent National meeting. Our own Bobby Parks is the new Vice president of the National Board so please congratulate him next time you see him and He can fill you in on any of the “happenings” with NADRA national. We had four Atlanta members that attended the Master Deck Certification classes; David Tibbetts (Atlanta Decking & Fence), Frank Pologruto (Decks & More), John Lea (DeckSouth), and Craig Jacks (Nyloboard). We also had several members that participated and won some of the National Deck Awards; John Paulin (Tailor Decks) won three awards, Rick Goldstein (Mosaic Group) won two awards, John Lea (DeckSouth) won two awards, and Frank Pologruto (Decks & More) won two awards. Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to all who participated
Rich Phillips (Decks By Design) spoke to the group about a HomeAid Atlanta project that we are undertaking in the coming weeks in South Atlanta. HomeAid is nonprofit group that is affiliated with the Atlanta Home Builders association and they provide transitional housing for the homeless in Atlanta. We are beginning to coordinate some of our efforts with the Atlanta HBA and this is the second project that we will be working with them on. Please contact Rich or myself if you can help us with materials or labor.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday– December the 12th. This is our Big Year End Event and we are holding at Maggiano’s – Cumberland Mall location. Arch will be our sponsor and we are still working on our guest speaker. This is our time to look at the year past and to plan for the coming year – we need a big attendance so please put it on your calendars and note that Spouses are encouraged to attend. We will also be putting together a “Toys for Tots” drive at the meeting – details to follow. Thanks again to all the out of town guests that took their time to join us – we loved having you and hope you can join us again anytime you are able.
Respectfully Submitted Keith Compton / Chapter President
June 25, 2012 – Atlanta, GA | I wanted to express my sincere thanks to all of those that came out this past Tuesday evening to the Atlanta Chapter meeting. It was a great success! We had 60 attendees, 21 vendor tables and 19 contractors representing a dozen different contracting companies. I want to especially thank the contractor members for coming out in full support. The vendors that participated were well pleased with the turn out and it would not have been a successful meeting without you. I would also like to report that the meeting was a success in terms of building a financial base. We were able to set aside enough money to ensure the chapter of some working capital as we move forward.
I also wanted to thank Michael Beaudry and Glen Mathewson for their work on the education seminar that took place in Atlanta on May 17th and May 18th. We had several contractor members attend and they all gave strong reviews of the content and the benefit of the course. We will soon have several Master Contractor members as they complete the remaining courses.
As I mentioned during the early part of the meeting we are beginning the process of our “Deck for A Solider” build this year. Scott McCawley (Dixie Plywood) has agreed to head up this effort and will be working with Frank Pologruto to coordinate the build. Please contact Scott or Frank if you are interested in participating. We are looking at the calendar and will initiate the project in late August or early September.
Our next meeting is scheduled for August 21st – time and place to be announced. Fiberon is sponsoring and we are working on a guest speaker. Also note that Deck Expo will take place in Baltimore from Oct 9 – Oct 12. We usually have a great turnout from the Atlanta Chapter and I hope this year will be the same. Here is the link for those interested: http://www.deckexpo.com/
February 23, 2012 | Thanks to all who attended the chapter meeting on Tuesday night. We had 52 attendees with a large number of first time visitors. We had an opportunity to review our platform for the year, look at the calendar of events, introduce the new committees and of course hear from our sponsor and guest speaker. I am excited about all that is in front of us and I am very thankful for so many of you that are helping move us forward.
Special thanks to Bill Sullivan and Azek for sponsoring the meeting and for introducing their new paver product line. Bill, Mike and Azek have always supported the chapter and have been a part of our group since its inception. I also want to give out a very special thank you to Paul Ivey our guest speaker. Paul is the only guest speaker that we have asked to come back to our meetings and once again he did a great job in relating his experience and expertise to our membership. I did want to mention that I thought it was unfortunate that we had some background disturbance during his speaking time. All of our guest speakers come to our meetings willingly giving their time to help us with informative and helpful information to better our individual business. I hope we will all be more respectful of that in the future and give 100% of our attention during their speaking time.
I learned a lot from my first meeting. First, we need more room and we have already begun looking at new spaces. Second, I will commit to a much tighter time frame for the meetings. The social time will start at 5:30 and I will do my best to start the meeting promptly at 6:00 and end no later than 7:30. I want to continue to give plenty of time to socialize before and after the meetings because that is one of the primary benefits of getting together.
I hope to see as many of you as possible at the upcoming Atlanta Home Show where NADRA will have a booth. If you didn’t get a chance to sign up for the booth time then please contact Scott, James or Bryan.
December 11, 2011 – Atlanta, GA | I sincerely hope all of you enjoyed our event at Maggianos on 12/8/11 as much as I did. We had a total of 85 industry pros in attendance! I thought the food and atmosphere were great and the guest and company that shared the room even better.
Thanks so much to Great Southern Wood Preserving, Timbertech, and Fortress Railing, for their generosity in sponsoring this event. They all stepped up to the plate in a big way for this one to make it possible to celebrate our year -end event as we did. Thanks to Maggianos for providing us Five Star service as well.
I hope all involved realize how fortunate we were to have Mr. Jimmy Rane, the founder and CEO of Great Southern Wood Preserving take the time to attend our event and serve as our keynote speaker.
The story of his and Great Southern’s history are not only extremely interesting but also very inspiring. Success stories of this magnitude are rare and to be in the presence of someone who has started from scratch and taken a business and industry to such a level was a true privilege. His manner of speaking and the humbleness he demonstrates is impressive, admirable, and refreshing. I hope Mr. Rane knows just how much we appreciate him spending the evening with us.
October 25, 2011 | Thanks to everyone that attended last Thursdays Atlanta NADRA Chapter meeting.
Special thanks to Greg Mizerack and PMC Building Supply for sponsoring this event. PMC has been a good supporter of our chapter and this was their second sponsorship in the past two years. Greg gave a nice presentation regarding PMC Building Supply’s services and brought along an associate who made a presentation on Feeney Cable Rail.
Special thanks go to Officer Hudson from the Georgia Public Safety Department who served as our guest speaker. His discussion and insight regarding legalities involved in operating commercial vehicles and the requirements pertaining to such was very interesting and helpful. Officer Hudson handled quite the influx of questions from our members and always had the answers. We really appreciate him taking the time to be with us. Thanks to Ginny Tibbetts for making the arrangements for Officer Hudson to attend.
Chapter business included the final discussions regarding our upcoming Deck for a Soldier effort. Keith Compton led the discussion on this and has since met with the homeowner and finalized our efforts with Operation Homefront.
Several of our chapter members who placed in the National Deck Design Awards were mentioned and recognized.
One of the most important events of the night included our BOD offices elections. Both president and vice president seats were in play. This chapter is fortunate to have two members with such ability, commitment, enthusiasm, and class as James Gunning and Keith Compton who were the two names submitted as nominees. Both took the floor for a few minutes each to partake in our version of the Presidential Debates. Each shared their thoughts and reasons for wanting to be involved in the leadership of this chapter.
September 14, 2011 | Thanks to everyone that attended [our last] meeting and helped with making it a success.
The turn out was great with 52 signing the registry. The McCormick & Schmick facility was a definite step in the right direction although it’s obvious we still need more space. Our chapter apparently made an impression on the staff there as well as the manager has offered to set up a private bar for us at our next meeting since our members just about ran the legs off the servers… lol.
Special thanks go out to Larry Pease and Kevin Magers of Trex for sponsoring our gathering. Larry gave an update on many of Trex’s new products including the porch boards and steel structure components. The presentation and the support and sponsoring of our chapter are much appreciated and it should be pointed out that Trex has strongly supported this chapter since our inception.
Very special thanks to our State Representative Mark Hamilton who was generous enough to spend an evening with us and serve as our key note speaker. He touched on a number of interesting topics including issues that affect our state economically and on the immigrations legislation that is being passed in Georgia. Thanks to Ms. Ginny Tibbett’s for arranging for Mr. Hamilton’s appearance.
Thanks to one of our founding members Frank Palogruto for giving a presentation on “Synergies”. This type of member participation is both appreciated and encouraged. I hope this is the first of many that will volunteer to share thoughts and ideas with our chapter members.
August 5, 2011 | Hello Atlanta NADRA Chapter Members
Our next Atlanta NADRA Chapter meeting is just around the corner. It will be held at the McCormick & Schmicks at Perimeter Mall on Tuesday the 16th at 5:30. This facility adds a touch of class and provides us more space, privacy, and other amenities. The food line up will be great as well.
This session is being sponsored by Trex. We have quite an agenda headlined by our Georgia State Representative Mark Hamilton who will be our key note speaker. I believe we’ll all find what he has to share interesting.
We’ll have several in- house business items to cover this time around and we’ll also hear from one of our own contributing members giving a short speak on “Synergies”.
I’d like to ask committee members to share any updates on progress or plans regarding their specific efforts. We’re at a point in the year that hopefully some progress has been made in all areas.
Our Deck for a Soldier effort is coming up soon so I’d like to specifically ask that those members who wish to volunteer to assist with this years Deck for a Soldier Program come prepared to commit to whatever aspects they can lend help with.
July 5, 2011 – Atlanta, GA | Thanks to everyone that attended the Atlanta NADRA Chapter meeting in June. The turnout was great with close to 50 in attendance including several visitors. I hope that each of you enjoyed yourself and that the guest will consider joining our association and becoming active members.
A special thanks to June’s sponsor, Guardian Building Products www.guardianbp.com and their team which included David Elenbaum (seen below) and Trey Cawthon. David gave an informative presentation regarding Guardian products. Guardian has some great looking products available with numerous decking options. The highlight for me personally was Guardians willingness to introduce a “Labor Warranty” for their decking products. This is a huge deal in my eyes and Guardian along with only a couple of other manufactures appears to be offering this at this point. Guardians program sounds strong and would provide protective insurance for our consumers and our reputations as contractors. The benefits of this program are obvious and it’s my hope that others will follow Guardian and others who are making these programs available.
Special thanks go to Lindsay Ranly and Stefanie Kane from Timbertech who gave a great presentation on “Social Media”. They shared a lot of good information regarding the social media trends and benefits. Like most successful marketing campaigns it involves a multi speared effort. Social Media is an important and inexpensive element that we all need to utilize to provide company exposure, name brand recognition, and LEADS.
Huck DeVenzio of Arch Chemicals announced that they are accepting entries for those of us that use Womanized lumber for a drawing that will result in a FREE NADRA Membership along and a paid trip to Chicago to attend the Deck Expo.
