GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., October 10, 2018 Deckorators®, a brand of Universal Forest Products, Inc. (Nasdaq: UFPI), has expanded its innovative line of wood-alternative decking with the launch of VoyageTM. This new line of composite decking featuring patented EovationsTM technology was introduced to building material dealers and contractors at DeckExpo 2018 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Like other members of the Deckorators Eovations decking family, Voyage delivers the industry’s best strength-to-weight ratio, absorbs virtually no moisture, and allows virtually no thermal expansion or contraction. Voyage adds to these benefits unique textured embossing for superior traction on the deck surface, along with the bold look of vertical grain variegation.

The textured embossing offers homeowners the enhanced safety of superior traction underfoot in both dry and wet conditions. Deckorators Voyage decking provides 34 percent or greater surface traction than other leading brands of composite decking. Voyage decking was tested against other leading capped composite deck boards in wet conditions by an independent third-party lab under the AS/NZS 4586-2013 standard. The deck boards were tested on Sept. 24-25, 2018.

Vertical grain variegation gives Voyage — an ultra-low maintenance composite — the trend-forward appearance of the highest-quality wood. Voyage comes in four beautiful colors that are the most popular in outdoor living spaces among homeowners: Sierra (dark gray), Tundra (gray), Costa (golden brown) and Mesa (red brown).

“We use extensive input from dealers and contractors to develop products that help them stand out from the competition,” said Chris Camfferman, managing director, marketing, Deckorators. “Our partners have experienced the unique benefits of our Frontier and Vault composite decking with Eovations technology. We’re thrilled to introduce them to Voyage, the best product in a good-better-best Eovations line.”

Voyage will be available for 2019 in 12-, 16- and 20-foot solid and slotted-edge profiles, as well as 12-foot fascia. It is backed by a 25-year structural, 25-year stain-and-fade and 25-year removal-and-replacement limited warranty that covers water and ground contact. Deckorators is one of the only brands in the industry to stand behind installations in, or in contact with, water or ground.

Eovations technology makes Voyage decking strong, lightweight and stable. During the Eovations process, a polymer-mineral blend is extruded and stretched. The result is a fibrous, 7/8-inch-by-5½- inch composite board that looks and works like wood. At the same time, each board is:

  • 35 percent lighter than most wood-plastic composite decking and similar in weight to PVC for easier handling on the job site.
  • Twice as strong as PVC decking in terms of stiffness-to-weight ratio for superior durability.
  • Moisture-resistant because it contains no organic material.
  • Extremely stable with the lowest thermal expansion/contraction of any thermoplastic deck board.

Voyage is capped with durable polypropylene to create a surface that is stain-, fade- and scratch-resistant.

Deckorators® Introduces Fastendry to Pool and Spa Market

Innovative new deck water management system features fastening capability

Grand Rapids, Mich., August 1, 2018 Deckorators®, a leading brand of Universal Forest Products, Inc. (Nasdaq: UFPI), has introduced Deckorators® FastendryTM to the pool and spa market. The exclusive system combines water management and deck board fastening capability in one solution. The product enables contractors to create valuable under-deck dry storage while saving up to 50 percent on installation time and 25 percent on installation cost versus competitive water management products.

Fastendry fits in the slotted edges of Deckorators composite decking, forming a tight seal that prevents water from passing through the spaces between boards. This keeps the understructure dry for longer understructure life, while making dry space for storage of pool toys, supplies and more. The polymer insert has a rigid base plate that fastens decking to joists with a nail gun, allowing for efficient deck board fastening during system installation.

Deckorators Fastendry

In pool and spa applications, Fastendry perfectly complements Deckorators VaultTM composite decking, which was named one of the Top 100 Best New Home Products of 2016 by This Old House magazine.

Made with polypropylene and mineral filler in the exclusive EovationsTM process, Vault decking absorbs virtually no moisture because it contains no organic material. Decking with EovationsTM technology significantly outperformed leading competitive wood-plastic composite decking in recent water absorption testing. Eovations technology also gives Vault unmatched stability: Vault has the lowest thermal expansion/contraction of any competitive deck board.

Vault is backed by a 25-year structural, 25-year stain-and-fade and 25-year removal-and-replacement warranty, which states that the boards “may be installed in contact with the ground or submersion in water.” Deckorators is one of the only brands in the industry to stand behind installations in, or in contact with, water or ground.

“The technology combination of Vault and Fastendry is unlike anything available in the pool and spa market today,” said Chris Camfferman, director of category marketing for Deckorators, the leading brand in composite decking, railings, balusters, post caps and other products. “With Vault and Fastendry, contractors can create beautiful, water-resistant decks with extra storage around pools, spas and hot tubs. And they can do so while realizing significant labor and cost savings.”

Fastendry is available in black 12-, 16- and 20-foot lengths. It is covered by a 25-year limited warranty on manufacturing defects.

How to Participate in Deck Safety Month®

How to Participate in Deck Safety Month®

(Article by Deckorators, Chris Camfferman. First appeared in the May issue of Building Products Digest and The Merchant)

3 ways you can do your part to promote safe outdoor living (and potentially expand sales)

May’s warming weather allows homeowners around the country to start spending extended time outside on their decks. Unfortunately, large numbers of those decks are poorly maintained or unsafe — making the structures vulnerable to collapse and putting homeowners and their guests at risk of serious injury.

Deck failures and resulting injuries can be avoided through regular inspection and maintenance of existing decks, and proper installation of new decks. May is national Deck Safety Month®, and represents a perfect opportunity for dealers to do their part to promote safe outdoor living while potentially growing deck sales.

Following are three ways dealers can participate in Deck Safety Month®:

Serve as a safety resource

The nationwide need for proper inspection, maintenance and remodeling of existing decks has never been greater. According to the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA), an estimated 50 percent of the 40 million residential decks and 10 million commercial decks in the United States are more than 25 years old.

During Deck Safety Month®, dealers can commit to becoming a true safety resource for customers. Make safety a main talking point with contractors and consumers, and be more intentional about making them aware of advancements in building codes and products. Stock the latest deck components — such as decking, railing and balusters — that can bring structures up to code while adding value to homes.

Get the word out

NADRA declared May 2006 the first Deck Safety Month® and is dedicated to raising awareness for necessary deck safety measures. The organization offers members a Deck Safety Month® toolkit featuring a variety of resources dealers can use to promote making decks safe and code compliant.

Promotional materials featured in past Deck Safety Month® toolkits include inspection checklists, a customizable press release template, a customizable video and a social media content calendar. (Visit www.nadra.org for the latest information on promotional tools available for 2016, including a new mobile application for evaluating decks.) Utilize such resources to increase deck safety awareness among customers and show your company cares about the community.

Offer deck inspections

NADRA offers tools to help homeowners perform their own deck checks, but deck inspection demands professional training, know-how and experience. When looking to identify parts of a deck that require attention, there is no substitute for a professional inspection.

During Deck Safety Month®, consider having select staff members undergo training to achieve professional certification in deck inspection. (NADRA offers inspection training and certification for members.) Offering homeowners deck inspection services not only helps ensure that decks are safe and code compliant, it could also lead to new sales opportunities.

This Deck Safety Month®, dealers have an opportunity to help prevent accidents and injuries associated with improperly maintained or unsafe decks. Consider these three Deck Safety Month® ideas — and come up with creative initiatives of your own — to raise awareness for deck safety and possibly tap into a market of decks that need repair or replacement.
