Witt’s Woods & Greens Dock and Deck Projects with CAMO® Edge Fastening System Wins Deck Awards

Jon Witt of deck building firm Witt’s Woods & Greens based in Ontario, Canada, selected the CAMO® Edge Fastening System for two award-winning projects entered in the North American Deck & Railing Association’s 2017 deck competition.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.  January 15, 2018

Jon Witt, owner of Witt’s Woods & Greens, selected the CAMO® Edge Fastening System for the construction of an award-winning two-story boathouse and dock on Sturgeon Lake, in Ontario. The North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA) named the dock the second place winner in the “Best Dock” category as part of its 2017 National Deck Competition. Witt’s crew used Western red cedar decking and fastened the edges with the CAMO Edge Fastening System using the Marksman Pro®-X1. The result is a secure, fastener-free surface solution that emphasizes the beauty of the dock and its rocky, cliffside surroundings.

Witt also won 2nd place in the wood deck category for a 380-square foot Thermory-modified scots pine deck treated with CUTEK Extreme. The multi-tiered deck in Lindsay, Ontario, features CAMO on all deck surfaces, trim and accessories.

“The system allows the beauty of wood such as the red cedar to shine through, without surface screws detracting from the look,”says Witt, who notes they discovered CAMO when they had to return to repair a deck where the surface face screws were out of alignment. “Aesthetics are very important to us as wood installers and we didn’t want to have that problem again.”

Located on Sturgeon Lake, the two-story boat house has 980 square ft. of deck area and sits at the bottom of a 45-foot rock cliff alongside the cliff wall. The upper deck is waterproofed to keep the boat house dry below.

“We had a callback on a leak in the waterproofing system and, because we used CAMO, we easily pulled up several boards and reinstalled them without damage,” he says. “As another benefit, since the edge-fastening system keeps water from resting in the screw holes, it also helps avoid water penetration that splits the wood over time, giving the deck greater longevity.”

Witt’s Woods & Greens, located in Fenelon Falls, Ontario, has used CAMO as their primary fastening system for several years. They rely on the Marksman Pro-X1 with 1/16 of an inch spacing.

With the CAMO Marksman Pro-X1, Witt’s crew can quickly and easily deliver CAMO® Edge Deck Screws into the edge of solid or grooved deck boards for fast installation. It employs a simple technology that is easy to use. The contractors simply load the proprietary deck screws into the hand-held guides that position them to be driven into the edge of the deck boards and provide automatic gapping. Special driver bits are included with the screws to ensure depth of drive.

CAMO offers several guides including the Marksman Pro, Marksman Pro®-X1, MarksmanPro-NB and the no-gap guide, Marksman Edge™ which ranges in cost from $20 to $50. They work with virtually any decking material—composite, PVC, and most soft and hard wood species with variations to accommodate nominal 6-inch boards as well as narrow boards, and offer a variety of spacing choices, including a no-gap option for treated wood decks that can also be used with secondary spacers when wider gaps are desired.

“We use CAMO for house trim fasteners as well and always have it on hand as a standard stock item,” says Witt. “We like the CAMO system for decks because it’s quick and easy to learn, the presets only let it go as deep as it has to go, and it’s very user friendly. I can’t see us using anything else in the future–it’s too beneficial to our business.”

AZEK® Building Products Partners with Dick’s Decks and Docks to Build a Dock Destroyed by Hurricane Matthew for a Deserving Family in South Carolina

Company Gives Back with AZEK Helping Hands Initiative

SKOKIE, IL – AZEK® Building Products, a leader in the development of premium, low maintenance decking, launched the AZEK Helping Hands initiative to give back to a deserving family who could use a new deck or dock after Hurricane Matthew damaged the Southeast Atlantic coast last year. This spring, Heather Doray, a teacher at Beaufort High School was surprised in her classroom, alongside her husband, Rob Kintz, with the announcement that her family was going to get a new dock.

AZEK received submissions from both her aunt and mother, nominating Heather for her charitable personality and dedication to the community. Heather also nominated her husband Rob since the hurricane was a setback for their family and the new dock would be an unbelievable gift for their family. Kintz had been renovating their house on St. Helena Island both before and after the hurricane, even after working long hours as an electrician. After all of the devastation they suffered, AZEK Building Products decided that this family deserved a new dock.

“We were finally able to buy a piece of paradise with a dock, and two years later, hurricane Matthew hit and destroyed it. It was devastating the next day to wake up and see the damage from the storm,” said Kintz. “We did not have the money to pay a dock builder, so the rebuild process would have been a slow one. Not only did AZEK replace the part that was destroyed, but AZEK replaced the entire dock. It means a lot to us that there are still companies out there like AZEK that give back to people in the community.”

AZEK partnered with Richard Knieriem, owner of Dick’s Decks and Docks, to complete the 2,800 square foot dock that features the TimberTech Docksider™ Collection in Gray.

“We’ve been using TimberTech since we started the business two years ago because I like using composite,” said Knieriem. “We love fixing docks and we love using this product – it’s basically the perfect product – and Heather and Rob will really get to enjoy a beautiful, new dock with this material. I am pleased to have been a part of this great initiative. Helping others is what it is all about.”
