Manufacturers Share Highlights from 2020 International Builders Show

A letter from NADRA’s President, Matt Breyer:

This year’s International Builder’s Show was again held in Las Vegas, and like always it is almost impossible to absorb it entirely! It’s a very well-run event, but the sheer size and scope of what you are immersed in can be daunting.

Part of what I attempt to do is visit with as many of our NADRA members as possible while walking the show. However, due to the 80-100,000+ people walking the show with me, this means I’m not able to physically talk with our members- as there’s a crowd in their booth ahead of me!

It’s been encouraging to see the growth and development with our members- and with the industry segment at large at this show. At the moment they haven’t sectioned us off into our own “wing”, but there is no doubt that the “outdoor living” category is well represented at IBS.
Something else I attempt to do at this show is simply walk through as much of it as possible, looking for design inspiration, subtle market trends, and clues for where consumer preferences are headed. Rest assured, if there’s a kitchen cabinet feature consumers want inside, at some point that’s a detail they will be asking about outside with the grilling station, and I’d like to be informed enough to have that conversation!

Something else I’ve grown to love about shows like this, is the excuse for some “reflection time” away from the “daily grind” back at home/office. Vegas isn’t exactly known for it’s “quiet spaces”, but the dramatically different environment does provide an opportunity to disrupt daily routines, and some personal reflection- and that (at least for me) is extremely rejuvenating!

It looks like we’re headed into another strong year. There’s good pent-up consumer demand, a great overall economy, and we’ve got some of the best materials available to use as we seek to exceed our client’s expectations yet again. Here’s to an AWESOME 2020!

We hope to see you throughout the year at various NADRA events and shows. Please stay in touch! If you’d like to send us photos and a brief recap from your experience at the International Builder’s Show, please send images, links and comments to Info@NADRA.org. We will keep the blog updated with posts from our members!

At your service,
Matt Breyer

We invite you to scroll through the photos & comments from NADRA members that participated & exhibited at the International Builder’s Show last week in Las Vegas:

Screw Products, Inc.:

We had a wonderful time at the International Builders Show this year in Las Vegas. The people who came to our booth were from a good mixture of states, a wide variety of visitors from lumberyards to designers, to contractors, and all were very interested in our new and improved line of Gen II fasteners. We had quality time to explain our Horizon Curve Head and its slight curvature of the head that make for for elegant, professional results. The Finish Ring underneath the head that provides a better finish by cutting the top fibers in the wood for an extra step in countersinking, our Turbine Ribs that cut quickly into the wood, leaving a professional, clean finish with maximum wood contact, our Twin Blade Knurls that cuts fast to dramatically reduce friction and heat on the shank, while reducing load on the drill and we talked about our Fast Start Tip sharp threads all the way to the tip and how the fastener has an immediate grip for a fast start. The inset thread cut drastically reduces splitting effect and minimizes the driving torque needed to engage the wood.

We introduced our new lines at the show that included AXIS™ Structural Wood Screws, EPIC™ Trim Head Screws, PICO™ Finish Head Screws, AURA™ for Cabinetry & More, NOVA™ Structural Lag Screws, YUKON™ Hex Structural Lags and ROCO™.

We were also able to show our new Planograms available to the retail lumberyard, home center and hardware store. Learn more at ScrewProducts.com.

TimberTech:

The 2020 IBS AZEK TimberTech booth was a labor of love with the joint efforts of Minnesota Platinum Contractors Phi Decks and Deck and Basement partnering on the deck build.  The 50×80 deck featured all of the colors in the Legacy and Vintage collections as well as the four colors in the new Reserve Collection. NADRA Members, AGS Stainless:

At IBS this year, AGS Stainless released its newest stainless steel railing system, Cascadia Rail.

Cascadia Rail was designed to provide deck builders with a visually-stunning and cost-effective stainless alternative to aluminum railing systems.

Made from 316 marine-grade stainless steel and fabricated to AGS Stainless’ exacting standards, the lineal foot cost of Cascadia is similar to aluminum rail.

Cascadia is easy to install, ships within 48-hours and is is currently the only ICC-ES approved metal railing system with a horizontal infill. This means Cascadia can be installed quickly,  anywhere in the US and Canada, by just about anyone – and without the need for the engineering calculations typically required by local permitting authorities for custom stainless rails.

For additional info or to order Cascadia for your next project, go to: AGSStainless.com

NADRA Members, Versatex:

IBS 2020 in Las Vegas was an incredible time. We had a blast showcasing our products at IBS with new color offerings with our Canvas Series. The best part about the show was conversing with industry professionals all week and learning about their work. This is definitely a show that should not be missed! Plenty of innovative products come up each year and we are lucky to have such great support from the industry. Learn more at Versatex.com

NADRA Members, Armadillo:

Avon Plastics was at the International Builders’ Show (IBS) last week, showing builders how to cut deck installation time by up to 60% just by using TurboClip Hidden Deck fasteners. That’s precious time you can spend elsewhere.

Avon Plastics booth featured all of our building material brands from Armadillo Composite Decking, Grid Axcents Decorative Lattice, TurboClip Universal Hidden Deck Clip and Quix Tile.

We think our Builder Rebate Program is the best in the industry! We had a great response by getting people signed up for the builder rebate program right at the show when they visited our booth.  When you use our brands, we’ll rebate you 3% of your material cost on all Armadillo, TurboClip, and Grid Axcents products. Plus, our Armadillo and TurboClip builders will receive two 192ct boxes of Narrow Gap TurboClip fasteners (enough to install 200sf) simply for signing up! Sign up today at pro.avonplastics.com.  All in all, it was an awesome show!

NADRA Members, MoistureShield:

MoistureShield® made a huge splash with its new booth at the 2020 IBS Show, right on the heels of winning “Marketer of Year” –the highest honor in Hanley-Wood’s Brand Builder Awards.  The winning campaign was highlighted in the booth, with captivating images of underwater scenes on their extremely moisture-resistant composite decking. MoistureShield was also submerged in an actual water fountain and pool, something no other decking would dare to promote!

MoistureShield’s Elevate™ capped wood composite decking, initially offered in select locations in 2019, has now launched nationally at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas. Contractor and lumber dealer interest in Elevate is growing rapidly, as they recognize the need for an attractive capped decking product at an entry-level price point. Elevate decking features a strong, protective cap which shields each board from impact, corrosion and harsh weather.

In addition, Elevate was Finalist in the NAHB’s Most Innovative Products in the Best of the IBS Awards.  MoistureShield also hosted designer and former HGTV host Chip Wade, as he explored the brand’s Solid Core Difference which makes all MoistureShield decking products moisture-resistant enough to be submersible in water.  He also did the “Feel the Difference” comparison the CoolDeck technology, in which you can actually feel the surface temperature difference in CoolDeck compared to other decking brands. And, Chip did a Facebook Live on how seamlessly MoistureShield complements Belgard® Pavers, firepit and outdoor kitchen for a complete backyard experience.  Learn more about Elevate HERE

NADRA Members, Regal ideas:

It was great meeting so many new contractors. Regal ideas products raise the bar when it comes to safety and durability. Our products are made from high strength 100% pure aluminum alloys and engineered to resist the tests of time and weather and proven to outperform vinyl, composite, wood and steel materials.

We showcased our TELESTEPS, a must have item for every contractor, builder and renovator! Here is a special offer to our fellow NADRA members!  Use code TELE10 on telestepsworldwide.com for 10% off the entire store plus FREE shipping!

It was a great show! We look forward to seeing you soon! Check out our DeckStars site to see where we will be on tour next!

NADRA Members, CAMO® Deck Fastening Systems:

The CAMO booth had an excellent turnout with quality conversations with both new and familiar faces. Every 15 minutes, attendees watched product demos, learning more about CAMO® DRIVE™, EdgeClips and EdgeXClips. Builders were able to try out the products themselves and hundreds entered to win a DRIVE while 15 walked away with a new tool!

The CAMO DRIVE™ Stand-Up Tool features three end guides to fasten CAMO Edge Screws, CAMO EdgeClips or traditional face screws—all using your own drill! CAMO DRIVE is a collated stand-up deck fastening tool designed to save contractors time, get them off their knees, and save their backs. Using the CAMO DRIVE tool can result in a deck installation that is 5X faster than other methods.  And, CAMO® EdgeClip® and EdgeXClip® revolutionize installation of grooved boards, either using CAMO DRIVE or their Never Miss Guide™ for hand-held fastening. Stay tuned for more innovation as warm weather approaches!

CAMO was a Day 2 Product Find at IBS by BUILDER Magazine!

NADRA Members, Feeney, Inc.:

The International Builders’ Show was a fantastic way to reconnect with our reps, dealers, and contractors. This year we debuted our brand new faux wood grain finish top rails for our DesignRail® aluminum railing system. Even our own reps were fooled into thinking it was wood! Our reps were also excited by our new DesignRail® Express program, cutting shipping down on select options to 5-7 days.

Besides the new products, we connected with editors at LBM Journal and Professional Remodeler magazine, and had delightful visits with Chip Wade and Mike Holmes Jr., and  attended the #bestofsocialmedia awards which highlighted some fantastic contractors on social. Learn more at FeeneyInc.com

NADRA Members, FastenMaster:

This year was FastenMaster’s biggest showing ever at the IBS in Las Vegas.  New to our booth was an interactive framing corner which showed off the FrameFAST tool and all-new NLB Connector.  The FrameFAST system has now expanded from its original configuration which made truss-to-top plate connections easier.  It can now create a continuous load path from the truss down to the foundation using the same 6” FrameFAST screw by utilizing different tool heads.  The new NLB, or Non Load-Bearing Connector, combines a screw with floating sleeve for attaching partition walls – delivering lateral stability while allowing for truss movement above the wall.

Over the three days of this show, our knowledgeable sales, marketing and technical teams engaged with many Pro customers, giving constant demonstrations and answering a variety of product application questions.  For our decking Pros, these demos included our FusionLOC demo deck, showing how to install faster by having collated clips and fasteners in one tool.

Another time-saving product enhancement was our new collated Cortex plugs, allowing the decking contractor to more quickly and precisely align the grain and color of our plugs to match the decking.  No doubt that the few thousand attendees who walked through our booth left with new knowledge of our time and money saving products, and a better sense of why FastenMaster remains Pro Driven. Learn more at FastenMaster.com.

Manufacturers share highlights from International Builders Show

NADRA Vice President, Heath Bowman attended the International Builders Show alongside President, Matt Breyer & several NADRA Committee members and NADRA ambassadors.

“It was great spending time with all of the NADRA members who participated in IBS.  Each booth we visited told stories and showed excitement about growth in sales, as well as, in new products coming.  I am personally excited to have accepted the VP position as it will allow me to be part of the industry in a more hands-on capacity.” Heath Bowman

NADRA Bronze level members, Screw Products, Inc.:

Three days can be a long time to stand on a trade show floor, but this year’s International Builders Show kept a steady pace and truly brought out the “International” for those interested in Screw Products, Inc. With growing interest from South America and even genuine interest with new friends in Africa!

From the moment we left the airport en route to our hotel, we knew this years show was going to be different. Different indeed. The IBS Marketing Team really stepped up their game this year with “Welcome” signage at the airport, as well as billboards along the way to the convention center! Well Done Team IBS!

Attendees were engaged and eager to learn. While we continued to have considerable interest in our overall Fastener line, our C-Deck Composite Deck Screws and DeckLok really caught the attention of many contractors. Several of which were proud members of the Great NADRA Team! Thanks for the continued support!

With hundreds of solid leads from contractors, dealers, distributors and fellow manufacturers, we are poised for a great 2018 at Screw Products, Inc. You won’t want to miss it! In fact, I hope they add an extra day to next year’s IBS! See you in Vegas!

AZEK® Building Products, NADRA Gold Level Members:

AZEK Building Products had a great showing at IBS with a stunning new booth, showcasing more than a dozen new products.  AZEK® and TimberTech® each released three new colors to their premium decking lines.  AZEK’s Vintage Collection® launched Coastline™, English Walnut™ and Weathered Teak™ while TimberTech added Sequoia™, Espresso and Whitewash Cedar™ to its Legacy Collection.  TimberTech also announced an upgrade to its warranty, growing from a 25-year to a 30-year limited lifetime warranty.

CAMO Fasteners, a Bronze member of NADRA had a great show at IBS.  We interacted with a lot of fabulous deck builders and demoed our CAMO products.

The International Builders’ Show is THE trade show of the year — and a great way to start 2018 says NADRA members, Feeney, Inc.! This year was especially big for Feeney, as we unveiled our new brand evolution: new logo, new booth, all new packaging, and new literature! We got great feedback from contractors, architects, retailers, and other vendors. Folks were WOWed by our new look! We also unveiled two new products:

DesignRail® Kits: a complete modular aluminum railing system

CableRail Conceal Kits: a low-profile alternative to our original CableRail Kits

Optimism was high at the show, folks were positive about the year ahead in the building and remodeling industries. We noticed more VR games and displays in booths: you could tour a model home or a sustainable quarry in Brazil, and even smash up an old water heater with a lightsaber! We had a great time touring the show, talking to folks at Therrawood (who had our CableRail on display in their booth!), Camo Deck Fasteners, Home Advisor, Houzz, Use Natural Stone, Architectural Grille, and 84 Lumber. We even did some live streaming on Facebook at our booth on Day 3. Thank you to all who stopped by!

Heather Marchand, NADRA’s National Programs and Marketing Director, walked the show visiting members.

“I so enjoyed walking the show floor and having the chance to stop and speak to as many members as my feet would allow! The IBS show is gigantic! I needed more time! It was a blast getting to sit down with so many familiar faces- and new ones. The weather was beautiful for the outdoor exhibits. Bob Heidenreich and The Deck Store crew did an outstanding job! I loved the little touches – such as the custom picnic tables. The highlight of my trip was probably the warm, welcoming running hug I received from our members at AZEK. I love my job! I loved having the chance to see our members hard work pay off at this fast-paced, packed show. You all put a lot of time & resources into coordinating booth personnel, Facebook Live events, the displays, handouts, trinkets & novelty items & so much more. It showed! Job well done, friends! Now let’s get to work building, and get folks playing outside more… one deck at a time!”  Heather Marchand

FEENEY, INC. TAKES FIRST PLACE IN NADRA DECK COMPETITION

FEENEY, INC. TAKES FIRST PLACE IN NADRA DECK COMPETITION FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW

Cable railing provider takes home top honors in manufacturer category

OAKLAND, Calif. – Nov. 21, 2017 – For the second consecutive year, Feeney, Inc. has been awarded first place in the Manufacturer Project category of the 2017 National Deck Competition. Feeney won for its deck railing on a Connecticut home designed to emulate the look of a boat. The awards, which are hosted each year by the North American Deck and Railing Association (NADRA), were presented last month at the 2017 Remodeling Show/Deck Expo held in Nashville.

“NADRA is proud to have Feeney as part of its membership roster. The winning project sets the bar high in creativity through the unique and distinctive architectural design, which incorporates multi-level decks throughout the home,” said Mike Beaudry, executive vice president of NADRA.

The “Boat House”, which overlooks the Niantic River in Waterford, Connecticut, utilized Feeney’s DesignRail® aluminum railing with stainless steel CableRail infill for the deck railings, highlighted with Feeney LED Rail Lighting under the top rail. An ipe wood top rail was used to create a more authentic boat look while also matching the decking for a seamless appearance. Feeney worked very closely with the general contractor, Jonathan Laschever of Laschever Building Company LLC, and others to create a railing solution that accentuated the unconventional shape of the home, including the curved bow at the top – one of the standouts of the design.

“The Boat House project was truly a work of art created by the home’s owner and Jonathan Laschever, and Feeney was honored to be involved,” said Andrew Penny, vice president of marketing and advertising, Feeney, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high quality stainless steel and aluminum railing systems. “We regularly receive photos of decks featuring our DesignRail® and CableRail railing products, and it is exciting to see the beautiful and creative spaces in which the railings are used. We are proud to be recognized by NADRA with such an important award.”

Prizes are awarded in a number of different categories, such as Wood Decks under $25,000, Porches, Illumination and Manufacturer Projects, to name a few.

Projects were judged on the following criteria:

Use of Space / Functionality

Creativity / Innovation

Evidence of Craftsmanship / Degree of Difficulty

Overall Visual Appeal

The panel of judges included: Katy Tomasula, “Content Builder”; Andrew Clements of BrightClaim WarrantyLink Solutions; Patrick Adams, publisher of Deck Specialist, Merchant, Building Products Digest and building-products.com; Andrew Wormer, editor of Professional Deck Builder; Victor G. Faggella of Centurion Home Inspections, Inc.; and Corban Quigg of NTA, Inc.

All entries were judged anonymously, and no identifying information could be included in the project photos. The contest was open to current NADRA members, and submitted deck projects had to be completed during 2017.

May Member Spotlight Winner – Andy Penny

Member Name: Andy Penny

Company Name:  Feeney, Inc.

Position: VP Marketing & Advertising

Member Category: Manufacturer

Location: Oakland, CA

When did you first get involved with this industry? It’s been about 30 years…ouch!

What inspired you to join NADRA? Our company had been working with contractors, carpenters and deck builders for years providing our CableRail products, so when NADRA approached us we thought it’d be a great way to support the industry and keep informed. We were one of the charter members of NADRA.

What was the first thing you ever built? I built this really cool coaster with a 2×4 frame, rope steering, and thin ball-bearing wheels held on to 1/2″ rod axles with cotter pins. Completely dangerous but totally fun. I’ve never built a deck, but I’d like to.

We want to get to know you, please tell us a little about your business: Feeney’s been around since 1948. They started as a small, family owned wire, rope, and rigging supply company serving the San Francisco Bay Area maritime and industrial communities. In the late 1980’s I joined the team to manage the marketing of a new line of stainless steel cable assemblies that was soon to become our CableRail product. Since then, the company has grown exponentially, and while we still do some industrial rigging, our main business is architectural products. We obviously still have CableRail going strong, but we also have our DesignRail aluminum railings, stainless steel structural & decorative rods, as well as a line of rod & cable garden trellises. We distribute throughout the USA and beyond and have worked on thousands of deck and railing projects spanning commercial, institutional, and residential applications. I still head up the marketing and advertising, and it continues to be busy, crazy, fun (and sometimes not-so-fun) and rewarding.

How do you define success? Personally, I’d say happiness is my primary measure of success. Professionally, building a profitable company/business while treating people (employees, customers, vendors) honestly and respectfully.

What advice would you like to share with fellow members that you have learned in your career? A lot of people don’t know what they’re talking about but pretend otherwise, so as my wise old Nicaraguan media director boss used to tell me, “follow your gut, man; follow your gut.”

Why do you support NADRA’s Deck Safety Initiative? Given the nature of our deck and railing products, Feeney, Inc. has always been committed to deck safety, and we’re proud to partner with NADRA during May’s Deck Safety Month.  Deck safety hits close to home with our Feeney family, especially when the safety of a deck and railing can depend on how we develop and explain our products.  We strive to ensure that all of our products, when installed properly, exceed code safety standards, and we proudly support an organization like NADRA that shares our standards and values.  This month we’re supporting the cause with social media promotions as well, utilizing our Facebook and Twitter feeds to share information about NADRA and our industry’s Deck Safety Month efforts.

What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this? Good question. You, know, it’d have to be something outdoors. I could see being a carpenter or contractor, and then I could also see being a river raft or backpacker guide somewhere. Hmmm… now you got me thinking.

A little more about Andy:  Born and raised in Oakland and still not a Raiders fan. No pets, married with one 14 year old daughter who is the love of my life even though she drives me crazy sometimes. I enjoy biking, both road and mountain, skiing, golfing, kayaking, building/repairing stuff around the house, BBQing, and drinking beer.

CABLERAIL STAINLESS STEEL CABLE ASSEMBLIES IDEAL FOR RAIL APPLICATIONS WITH A VIEW

Distinctive weather-tough railing infill alternative favored by architects,

builders, homeowners and commercial property owners

LAS VEGAS (January 22, 2013) – Today at the International Builders Show, Feeney, Inc., a leading manufacturer of high quality stainless steel and aluminum railing systems, features its inventive CableRail line including a wide selection of both standard and custom fabricated stainless steel cable assemblies. Made of beautiful, weatherproof 316-grade stainless steel with over 70 percent recycled content, these cables and components are suited to any railing application and offer a low maintenance, environmentally friendly, and visually unobtrusive alternative to commonly used wooden or metal picket infill.

Now celebrating 65 years in business, the company first introduced CableRail stainless steel cable assemblies in 1988 in response to a growing interest by architects and builders for modern, discreet railing infill products. The product line caught on quickly and expanded significantly. In fact, cable rail was named one of the 15 products that architects can’t live without in the May/June 2012 issue of Residential Architect magazine.  According to Taal Safdie of San Diego-based Safdie Rabines Architects, “Cable rail creates a delicate, transparent guard rail that doesn’t rust. It’s ideal for use with nice views, because it virtually disappears and is more affordable than glass. All the houses we did around our canyon have it, and we even plan to use cable rail in our own new home.”

CableRail Standard Assemblies are Feeney’s most popular cable product. They feature special field-installed Quick-Connect® cable fittings with patented automatic-locking jaws that make installations very fast and easy. These standard assemblies are available in pre-cut lengths from 5 feet to 70 feet for easy ordering and come in three cable sizes. The pre-cut lengths help save time by eliminating the need to take precise railing measurements. Installers simply select assemblies that are longer than needed and trim any excess in the field during construction.

“Simplicity of design, clean lines, ease of installation, and low maintenance set our distinctive CableRail infill cable system apart,” said Del Leutbecher, Director of Business Development at Feeney.  “Perfect for almost any exterior or interior application in residential or commercial settings, CableRail offers an innovative railing solution that creates an appealing design aesthetic wherever it is used.”

CableRail assemblies are perfect for applications where the view is all-important. The clean, finished look of these strong but slender cables is enhanced by special end fittings that are easily concealed into wood or metal posts. The result is a railing infill that is not only durable and attractive but also virtually invisible, creating an unimpaired view.  Feeney provides a 10-year warranty on CableRail cable and hardware. An experienced staff can provide assistance with product selection and technical support.

If you are attending the International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas on January 22 – 24, 2013, please be sure to stop by the Feeney Booth #N1331 and see the CableRail line of standard and custom fabricated stainless steel cable assemblies and other Feeney products.

Feeney offers an extensive line of Quick-Connect fittings to meet their needs, and we are continuously expanding the options available,” said Andrew Penny, Vice President of Marketing and Advertising. “All fittings feature the gripping power of Quick-Connect® jaws for quick, easy installation. No crimping tools or time-consuming wedge-type compression fittings are required, and there’s no need to wait for factory-made assemblies.”
