NADRA Atlanta Chapter Meeting Re-Cap

August 2015

Our guest speaker from Constant Contact showcased the third meeting of 2015 taking place at the Ivy in Buckhead, GA.  There were 27 members and guests in attendance.  The meeting was held on August 18, 2015.

During the meeting the previous minutes were read and approved along with the anit-trust statement.  Nominations were made for the new board to include Mike Reasons as President, Joey Matthews for Vice-President, Joel Mooneyhan for Secretary and Kevin Waters for treasurer.  Voting for the new board will take place in the October meeting.

James Gunning spoke about the DeckExpo show and provided class, education and social information.  He also discussed NADRA’s main event and the National Deck Competition.  Several members of the Atlanta Chapter plan to attend.

Joey Matthews gave an update on the Deck for A Soldier project and all material and labor donations were finalized during the meeting.  The build, which is set to happen on Oct 1st, should be another great opportunity for us all to serve.

Main sponsors for the meeting was Southeastern Underdecking and iLighting.  Sean Ryan discussed a very detailed presentation on the new products from iLighting and benefits of their system.  Joey Mooneyhan discussed the benefits of using Southeastern Underdecking to keep a space below the deck dry.  They have many products that can help to finish out the normally unused area under the deck.

Demming Bass from Constant Contact gave us a very informative presentations and discussion on how to use Constant Contact to change the way we do our marketing.  His ideas on how to specifically use the service in the decking industry will prove to be helpful for many of our members.  Demming also discussed the partnership with NADRA and how we can save money.

The next meeting will be held at the Ivy Buckhead on Tuesday Oct 20th.

NADRA’s 2015 Atlanta Golf Outing Brings Over 60 Industry Pros Together

From James Gunning, NADRA Atlanta Chapter President:

I am trilled to recap on Atlanta’s first NADRA golf outing that we had on Monday, June 15th at the Brookfield Country Club in Roswell Georgia. NADRA members showed their support despite the brutal 95-degree temperatures with 100% humidity, on a Monday during the busiest time of year…we still Had 60+ golfers attend what turned out to be a pretty competitive golfing journey.

Festivities began with a shot gun start at 1:00 in the afternoon (peak heat) – so what is the solution to proper hydration supply for the finest NADRA golfers?  20 cases of water and Powerade backed up with plenty of beer and booze of course! I want to give thanks our beverage cart sponsors PMC and Wolmanized Outdoor Wood, as well as all of our official golf outing sponsors:

  • Wolmanized Outdoor Wood
  • PMC Building Supply
  • Boise Cascade
  • Stock Building Supply
  • Screw Products, Inc.
  • Rainaway
  • FastenMaster
  • Trex
  • Fiberon
  • CoolScreens
  • ProWood
  • Metro Building Products
  • Compton Sales
  • MultiView
  • Southeastern Underdeck Systems
  • Decksouth
  • Simpson Strong Tie
  • YellaWood
  • Guardian Building Products
  • UltraLox

Without the support of all our sponsors, local chapter members and the help from NADRA HQ – the Beaudry’s, we could not have pulled off such a fun and well-attended event.

NADRA National Board Member, and active Atlanta member, Heath Bowman said, “The golf outing was great. A lot of us don’t get to see each other outside of chapter meetings. It’s fun to catch up in a different setting and have a good time with friends in the industry. It also helps create awareness. NADRA does a lot for the industry, and many of the guests who played, got a chance to see the benefits of being involved with a group like ours. Obviously, networking is a huge part of it, and all of us work hard to stand out in a very competitive industry. But even more important are the friendships beyond the word. At the end of the day, the work we do is to add enjoyment in the lives of the people we work for. Events like the golf outings are a great reminder that we can have fun while we work hard.”

We finished the evening with a wonderful southern style buffet and awards ceremony.

The blistering weather apparently helped the golf scores heat up. Two teams finished with a score of 55:

  • Team Trex
  • Team Outback

After a scorecard playoff, Team Outback was given the winners trophy with Team Trex as runners up.

  • On Hole # 3 the closest to the pin award was given to Lamar Lea of Decksouth – 20” from the hole
  • On Hole #15 the closest to the pin award was given to Blake Buckler of PMC – 42” from the hole
  • On Hole #18 the long drive award was given to Ty Nowell of Universal Forest Products   – 348 yds ( ouch! )

Several attendees told me that this golf outing was one of the best they have ever participated in; others (even the country club) could not believe that this was our first tournament.  I was so pleased to hear that the common opinion was that the event was ran extremely well and I’ve got to say, we could not have done that without the help of John Lea and Mike reasons of Decksouth. John, thanks for letting us attend your club. It was fun and I am looking forward to the next one!

See you all August 18th at the Ivy in Bulkhead meeting start at 6:00!

NADRA Atlanta Chapter Meeting Re-Cap

February 2015

The year started off with a successful meeting this February despite power outages and ice storms in the area with the first Atlanta NADRA chapter meeting of 2015 on February 17th held at the Ivy in Buckhead.  There were 36 members and guests in attendance. Thank you Nyloboard and Joey Matthews for sponsoring this meeting!

During the meeting we caught up on the minutes from the last two meetings due to postponing minutes in December at our Christmas Dinner.  We were able to get an update from some exciting things going on at our National level from national board member Bobby Parks.  Time was spent discussing our upcoming chapter meeting schedule for the year and planning for our Deck for a Soldier project as well as our first annual Golf Tournament.  Joey Matthews will be chairing the build for Deck for a Soldier and is currently looking for an optimal candidate that we can serve.  Mike Reasons gave a brief overview of the details for the golf tournament on June 15th at Brookfield Country Club.  Currently we are looking for hole sponsors from vendors and companies who want to participate.  This will be our main fundraising effort for 2015.

Financial Progress as of 1/31/15:

  • Income: $0
  • Expenses: $600.20
  • Balance: $3104.79

A special thanks to Joey Matthews of Nyloboard for sponsoring this month’s meeting.  Joey gave an interesting presentation on the history of the company as well as what makes Nyloboard unique in the market of alternative decking.  He also reviewed the product line and its features and benefits.

Brian Pierce of Catalyst Wealth management gave a very practical presentation of some helpful financial tools.  He was able to speak to some key action items that each of us should be doing with our financial plans and ways to set our business and family up for success.  He also provided leave behind material and some takeaways to follow up on.

Our next meeting will be held on:

  • Tuesday – April the 21st at the Ivey  in Buckhead.
  • Our sponsor for the meeting is Tailorwood and our guest speaker will be from Houzz.

We had a great turn out last night at The Ivy in Buckhead Georgia.  As the crowd of 40 plus people shuffled in we had some time for to socialize and gather our food and beverages. The meeting started at 6:15 and it was so nice to see our members as well and a few new faces!

We started by going over the Anti-trust Statement. Ginny Tibbets then went over the minutes and we got down to business with the evening sponsor Weyerhaeuser. Mark Barbour talked briefly about his company and then talked about a new product Resysta that they have had some great success with. Jan Spittleburg from JSphotoFX was our guest speaker; Jan gave our members a great schooling on photography.

We quickly went over chapter business, and then the night took a different turn form our usual meeting. Mike Reasons our Atlanta Vice President and I participated in NADRA’s first Deck for a Soldier Ice Bucket Challenge. I challenged Kirk Hammond, Mike Beaudry, and Bill Ross from the National Board. Mike Reasons Challenged: Kevin Waters, Heath Bowman, and David Elenbaum from our local chapter.  The time is ticking and I look forward to seeing how viral this Challenge gets!

NADRA Atlanta Chapter Meeting Recap                                                                                              February 2014

We opened up the New Year with our initial meeting held at the Ivy in Buckhead last Wednesday February 26th.  It was a great turnout; we had 39 attendees sign in and it was a very strong showing of our Deck Builder members. I want to thank Jon Bailey (Vice President) and Bill Nugent (Director) with Wahoo Decks (www.wahoodecks.com ) for sponsoring the meeting and for their presentation on wahoo’s offerings with a focus on the Dry Joist and Wahoo Rail, with a presentation that showed local jobs and various install applications.  Our Guest speakers for the evening were Debbie Fitzgerald; President of Fitzgerald PR Inc. (www.fitzgeraldpr.com), and Sandy Barth; President of High Profile Group LLC. (www.gohighprofile.com). They did a great job in presenting an overview of how public relations and marketing go hand in hand.  It was very good information and our members will benefit from what we learned as we move through the year.

We started off the evening calling the meeting to order and Mike Reasons read our anti-trust statement. Ginny Tibbets then read the previous meeting minutes and we had a vote. Then we officially announced the 2014 Atlanta Chapter Committee’s:

Membership includes Ginny Tibbets, Greg Mizerak, and Dave Raught

Deck for Solider includes Scott McCawley and Dave Tibbets

Deck Safety/Code includes Mike Reasons, Steve Matrangos, and Kent Fairchild

Marketing includes James Gunning, Bryan Miller, and John Gwaltney

We look forward to our committee’s input and involvement throughout the year.  I also had an opportunity to present the 2014 board members for the upcoming year;

Mike Reason- Vice President

James Gunning- President.

There is a lot of work to be done and I appreciate these members taking a lead role in our chapter for 2014.
