On Saturday, June 16th, my daughter and I, along with a few friends participated in the AFSP Out of the Darkness Overnight walk. A special thank you to so many of our fellow NADRA members that have supported our efforts over the years. This year, we walked through the night to raise awareness and funds for suicide prevention. This was our third year participating in this walk and it helps support my daughter with her personal struggles. It is an amazing experience to hear the stories of others and to share our story. This year, I believe that there were over 1700 walkers. These walks are typically 16 – 20 miles long overnight through various big cities, There is always an east coast walk and a west coast walk. This year we walked through the streets of Philadelphia and others walked through the streets of Dallas, TX. We have walked through New York City, Washington D.C. and I believe next year will be in Boston.

November 16, 2016 Deck for a Soldier® Update:
The New Jersey Deck for a Soldier® build is for a young soldier who served in the Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2007 – 2011 and was in the Inactive Reserve from 2011 – 2015. A little over a year ago, he was on his way to work one morning as an electrician apprentice on his motorcycle when he was hit by an elderly gentleman. He was in a coma for 45 days and was left with nerve damage in his eyes and right leg. He lost part of his left leg. His mom had to quit her job to help take care of him. Friends all joined together to donate money to help him buy a house, but it only has a front entrance and no outdoor living space. We are planning on installing a sliding door in the kitchen and a deck on the rear of the home to give them a second entrance, as well as, a place to enjoy the outdoors.
We have the deck framing, decking and railings. We are still in need of:
- A door, The framing, insulation and trim necessary for the door install
- Wood posts to support the deck
- Misc. hardware,
- Monetary donations for small items
If you feel moved to help with this project, please go to the NADRA website and fill out the online pledge form, it would be greatly appreciated.
Here is the design for this project so far:
October 2016, Deck for a Soldier® Update:
NADRA New Jersey volunteers are still looking for additional material, labor and especially, monetary pledges, for the upcoming Deck For A Soldier® project in New Jersey. We do have quite a few decking material pledges but are still in need of some items like hardware, a sliding door, money for permit fees and builders to help with the labor. This build is for a young soldier who did two tours of duty and was severely hurt in a motorcycle accident after he returned home. We are planning to start this build in mid – late December. We are looking for material and labor donations to help with this project. If you would kindly go to the NADRA website and fill out the online pledge form, it would be greatly appreciated.
NADRA Deck for a Soldier®/Deck for a Hero® Committee Chair
Following is a recap of November’s NADRA NJ Chapter meeting. We had a very good meeting and we would like to thank everyone for attending. We had an excellent turn out considering the hardships so many have endured following Hurricane Sandy. We had a few new builders in attendance and we gladly welcomed them. Our speaker, Darren Slaughter spoke about websites. He gave many ideas and suggestions on how to optimize your website and get the most out of it. We discussed where to hold the Holiday party and decided on the Verblaauw’s home. We have a few options for Deck for A Soldier; helping out a Soldier who lost his home in the Hurricane. We also brought up the idea of building a Deck for Recovery for an organization affected by the Hurricane. Our sponsors for the meeting were Trex, Tim Schlosser and Doug Lind. Thank you Tim and it was so nice that Doug flew in from Colorado to talk about Elevations. Tim told us that Trex Accents will be discontinued, showed us the new railing that was introduced as well as a new fascia product. Doug explained the Elevations framing. He explained the Code approvals. He also explained that using Elevations extend the labor warranty from 2 years to 5 years for Trex Pro contractors. He showed us the new stair system that they have implemented for the Elevations framing.
Our next meeting is tentatively planned for Tuesday January 15, 2013.
We hope everyone has a nice holiday season!!!!
