CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR INDUSTRY’S 2016 NATIONAL AWARD WINNERS!

Mr. Hammond presented NADRA’s 2016 Recognition Award to Andrew Clements with BrightClaim. Andy commented on his recognition: “For over a decade BrightClaim’s Warranty Services has assisted the exterior building product industry by providing cost effective third-party warranty services. This provides the opportunity to work closely with a wide variety of industry leaders and associations.  NADRA represents an association driven to assist members and the betterment of the industry. It is BrightClaim’s privilege to be a part of the NADRA family.  We are  honored to receive a recognition award to assist the decking industry with the Consumer Product Awareness Charter.  The NADRA CPAC program’s goal is to assist consumers, manufactures, resellers, and installers.  It’s a great honor and privilege to assist NADRA help the decking industry. At BrightClaim our goal is to be your third party warranty services resource partner.” Andrew Clements, National Account Executive, BrightClaim

The 2016 Terry Award was presented to Bill Ross, Fiberon. Bill was unable to make it this year, but James Gunning was present to accept the award on his behalf. “ find it somewhat ironic that the one year (since the inception of DeckEXPO) that I was not able to come to the show or the NADRA Big Event, that this is the year I get the much respected Terry Award.  If I was a little paranoid I might wonder if it’s a payment for not showing up…, but I am not paranoid.  I am honored and humbled and joy-filled. As I said, I don’t wonder if it was a payoff, and if I didn’t wonder about that, I certainly don’t wonder whether or not it was time well invested.  My association with the NADRA has been a fantastic growth experience,  working not just for the company,  Fiberon, in which I earn my living, but  for the greater industry in which I thrive and gain great satisfaction.  It has been a lot of hard work at times and a whole lot of fun almost all the time. One thing that would make it all much better was if my peers stepped up to fill board leadership roles.  The industry needs you! Your time, talent and a little bit of your treasure.  My guess is, that you will get more than you give and have a great time making things better! Thanks again to all members.  Wishing you continued success.  Bill Ross, Fiberon

AWPA and ICC Approve New Treated Wood Standards

AWPA and ICC Approve New Treated Wood Standards

ICC-ES AC326 – The  ICC final effective date of implementation is July 15, 2016.

Quakertown, PA (February 16th, 2016) Many of you may or may not be aware of the discussions that have been taking place regarding potential changes to Treated Wood Standards moving many structural and critical items to a Ground Contact treatment retention level.

Those New Standards have now passed the AWPA (American Wood Protection Association) and the ICC (International Code Council). The ICC final effective date of implementation is July 15, 2016.

NADRA’s mission is to provide a unified source for the professional development, promotion, growth, and sustenance of the Deck and Railing building industry in North America so that members can exceed the expectations of their customers.

This mission includes the promotion of proper deck construction, deck safety and ultimately serving the best interest of the consumer. While the Association is made up of professionals from all industry segments, we are aware that consumers use a significant amount of treated wood in DIY projects. The consumer is usually not knowledgeable enough to be able to know the proper uses for which treated wood product they are buying and therefore misuse and misapplication can occur.

Ground Contact treatment is necessary for physically above-ground material when:

  • Soil or other debris may build up and stay in contact with the wood
  • There is insufficient ventilation to allow air circulation around the wood
  • Material is installed <6 inches above the ground
  • Material is installed in contact with non-durable untreated or older construction with any evidence of decay
  • Wood is subject to frequent or recurring wetting
  • Wood is used in tropical climates
  • The wood is both:
    • Difficult to maintain, repair or replace and
    • Critical to the performance and safety of the entire system

Joists and beams for decks and docks fit both of these final criteria and therefore require Ground Contact treatment. Other Ground Contact applications include Ledgers, Posts, Step Stringers and Decking used at Ground Level and on Walkways.

ICC-ES AC326 Sample Table - The ICC final effective date is July 15, 2016

NADRA looks forward to the implementation of the New Standards as a step forward in the industry to providing those who enjoy Outdoor Living with a better, safer improved product and experience.

NADRA Atlanta Chapter – December 2012 Meeting

NADRA Atlanta Chapter – December 2012 Meeting Re-Cap

It was a great Year End event for our Chapter this past Wednesday evening at the Maggiano’s , Cumberland and thanks to all who attended. We had 70+ attendees and several guests including our “Deck For a Solider” recipients – Sergeant Michael Dickerson and his wife Jessica.  I want to thank Kirk Hammond with Lonza for sponsoring the meeting and for his comments pertaining to our chapter and his involvement with the National Board. .  Our guest speaker was John Gordon, The Director of Strategic  Accounts for the Home Depot.   John’s presentation was informative and eye opening as he related some principals of operating with Integrity and also gave insight into the current market conditions and an encouraging look toward future market direction.

We started off the evening by hearing from Jeffrey Johnson and David Elenbaum.  Jeff shared information on a nonprofit that he is working on and David shared some of the directives and happenings from the recent National Board meeting. I then had the opportunity to review the past year and highlighted many of the activities and events that our Chapter participated in.  We had a great year as a chapter and it was a pleasure to review all that we accomplished.  I want to thank all of our sponsors during the past year:  Azek (Bill Sullivan), Duradek (Norm Shafer), Fiberon (James Gunning), Trex (Larry Pease), and Lonza (Kirk Hammond).  We could not have executed our plan this past year without your help and we are all grateful for each of you stepping up and contributing.  We celebrated our third Deck For A Solider build and presented certificates to the 27 entities and individuals that participated.  We also introduced Sergeant Dickerson and his Wife Jessica and thanked them for their service and sacrifice.  I strongly believe that D4S is the best thing we do as a chapter and want to thank all of you for giving so much to this endeavor.  We held our first “Toys For Tots” drive this year and it was an overwhelming success.  I want to give special thanks to Frank Pologruto for putting this effort together and heading it up.  Frank and I delivered close to 200 toys to the center yesterday and I am hopeful that we can make this effort an annual event.

Our next meeting will be held in February of 2013 – time, place and date to be determined.  We are looking for speakers and sponsors for next year and our Leadership group will be meeting in January to put the plan together so if you are interested in sponsoring or if you have any ideas, speaker thoughts, or anything that you would like for us to focus on please contact me.  Thanks again for being a part of our Chapter and for all that each of you do to make us successful.

Hoping that each of you have a Blessed and Happy Holiday Season.

Respectfully Submitted,

Keith Compton / Atlanta Chapter President
