NADRA’s very first sporting clay event on June 29th in Coplay, PA did not disappoint! Although we are all slammed this time of year, we gathered together to blow off some steam with a little gun powder. The gathering began with a few words from our main sponsors, Wolf Home Products and Sequoia Supply. This was followed with an inspiring rules and regulations overview from safety management. From pointers like, “don’t take selfies behind the line of fire” to “although it might be tempting, no shooting live game”. Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays did an outstanding job not only ensuring the safety of our group, but entertaining as well.
The course included 16 stations of side flying, sky high, jumping clay pigeons on 64 beautiful acres of an old quarry. The course was challenging, yet fun and the camaraderie was immeasurable. Here’s what a our members had to say:
“The NADRA event at Lehigh Valley Sporting Clay’s was absolutely PHENOMENAL! What a great event, but even more so- what great attendees! Thank you NADRA for hosting something unforgettable- I cannot wait to go back next time!”
– New Member, Tayler Young, The Falcon Group
“It was a blast! What’s better than driving around shooting guns! Wait.. Driving around shooting guns with old friends and making new ones! That’s even better. It was a great team building exercise for me and my guys and we got to share war stories about the day as well as talk about how business was rolling out this season in our NADRA region with some of the top talent in the country. It was a great day all around. I want to thank everyone at NADRA HQ again for putting it together. Count us in for next year!”
– Builder member, Sean McAleer, DeckRemodelers.com, LLC
The day concluded with prizes for the top foursome and best shooter. Matt Breyer and Ryan Lebron, from Breyer Landscape and Construction, LLC, along with Allen Homan and Joe Dandria from Perma Column East, LLC took first place in highest scored foursome. Stan Hathorn from Royal Building Products took first place for overall highest shooter. Well done! The event was a great success and we look forward to doing it again.
Thanks to all who came out, as well as our sponsors: Wolf Home Products, Sequoia Supply, Trex Company, Inc, and Perma Column East, LLC!
I am extremely pleased to let everyone know that the Northeast Regions Deck for a Soldier® build went very smoothly and was completed in four days. The build started on Monday, January 16th, 2017 with a crew from three separate builder member companies. We installed the Trex Elevations steel framing, along with the help from several Trex and distributor representatives. Tuesday was supposed to be a wash-out of a rainy day, but several of us gathered, installed the stairway platform and cut all of the stair stringers. Wednesday, we had crews from four builder members and we installed the decking, stairways, some fascia trim and the Andersen sliding door. We also had representatives from Fortress Railings, Fiberon, and AZEK helping out. Thursday, we had two crews, plus representatives from Trex, Wolf Home Products, Fortress Railings and Excelsior Lumber, Inc. that helped install the last of the fascia trim and the railings. We were lucky enough to have spiked the interest of a local newspaper and also the TV station News 12, New Jersey. We also received coverage from The Daily Record, you can read more & see photos / video here.
Our Soldier was extremely thankful and really could not believe that a program like ours exists. He was overwhelmed when wheeled out on the deck for the first time and was able to look around his neighborhood. Kyle added: “The Deck for a Soldier® program has been top notch. Really great crew. I couldn’t even imagine something like this existed where people are just giving away decks for people but it does,” Chappell says.
I would like to thank, from the bottom of my heart, everyone involved in this project for their time and materials. Many gave so freely to this project that it was inspiring to all. I continuously heard the following words, “Whatever you need for this project, just let us know”. We certainly could not have gotten this project done without the support of the best team in the decking industry. NADRA Rocks!!

January 18th, 2017 UPDATE:
Well, everything has fallen into place and we were able to start our Deck for a Soldier® build in Boonton Twsp., NJ on January 16th! The Township has waived the permit fees except for the DCA fee. We’ve had a local builder member offer to help out and dig the footing holes on Saturday 1/7/17.
We had a footing inspection on 1/11/17 and we completed the pour right after that along with the bottom of the stairway landing. We have several builders lined up to help out with this build for the four days that we anticipate the build to take, but we can always use more. If anyone else wishes to help out please go online to fill out a pledge form found here, or contact Bruce V. at BruceVerb@njdecksandrailings.com.
Thanks to our awesome manufacturers, distributors and lumberyards, all of the necessary materials have been donated. Be on the lookout for pictures and more on NADRA’s Facebook page.

January 4th, 2017 UPDATE:
We want to start out by wishing everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!!
We just wanted to let everyone know that we will be starting the Deck for a Soldier® build in Boonton, NJ on January 16th, weather permitting. This project is located a little way off of Route 287 about 10 minutes north of Morristown, NJ. This deck will be built using Trex Elevations Steel Framing, so if any of you would like to learn some of the ins and outs of working with this product, please let us know so we can schedule you to volunteer to frame. Of course we will need help for about 4 days in order to complete this build and help tying up loose end to finish is always needed. If you have already filled out a labor pledge, please let us know what day(s) that week work best for you or your crew. We are also hoping to dig and pour the 10 footings required for this deck either late next week or very early the following week so that the concrete has time to cure before we start building. We would appreciate if we could get a few guys to help dig these footings. We have some builders but can still use a few more to step up and help out with this build. If you are interested in helping and have not notified us or completed an online labor pledge, please email us or click on this link. We will try to keep a steady flow of help on the project so that we do not have too many workers on any given day.
Thanks to all of our manufacturers, distributors and lumberyards, all of the materials have been accounted for. The one thing that has not been supplied yet is a Porta-John.
As we hear back from each of you, we will put together a schedule that best fits the needs of the build and will be back in touch with you soon.
Thank you very much for your support and help,
Judy Verblaauw (on behalf of)

December 2016 UPDATE:
With the holidays just around the corner it is the time of year to think about giving in the old fashioned tradition for the holidays, donating to a great local cause and giving back to the community where we make our living. The NADRA Deck for a Soldier® program is about to kick off it’s Northeastern build on 1/16/17, weather permitting. We are planning to get a start right after the first of the year and install the footings prior to this build date. We have almost all of the materials accounted for except for some concrete form tubes, a Porta-John, and some small hardware. If anyone can help us with these last few things it would be greatly appreciated. Lastly, we can still use a few more builders to step up and help out with the build. If anyone can donate time to help out on this project please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can fill out the online form to make your pledge of material, labor or even a monetary pledge for various unexpected expenses right here.
We will start to send out emails in order to figure out who can help on which day in the near future. This will keep a steady flow to the project and keep from having too many workers on any given day.
NADRA’s 2016 Southeast Regional Golf Tournament Brings Industry Pros Together
What a turnout! NADRA had a successful golf tournament on Monday, May 9th at the Brookfield Country Club in Roswell, Georgia. NADRA members showed their support despite the busy time of year. It was quite the competitive event!
The festivities began with handing out custom NADRA coolers to all attendees and a shot gun start at 11am.
Teams took to the greens to play their best and stopped to see what sponsors had put together at each hole.
NADRA National Board Member, Heath Bowman said, “This year’s NADRA golf tournament brought a lot of familiar faces together for a beautiful day to connect and have a good time together. Even more exciting was seeing a handful of new faces, which were a great reminder why we do this: building our community, sharing resources, and ultimately succeeding in business together.”
Thank You, Sponsors:
Southeastern Underdeck Systems
BMC / Stock Building Supply
Atlanta Home Show- Cobb Galleria
Thank you to all of our friends listed here, we could not have pulled off such a fun and well-attended event without all of your support.
Thank you to NADRA members and the Southeast Regional team leaders, Mike Reasons, Kevin Waters, Joel Mooneyham and Joey Matthews.
Thank you Andy Clements for taking photos throughout the day!
A special shout out to Heath Bowman for taking care of beverages & all of your help setting up. You’re by far awarded MVP of the day!
We finished the day with a wonderful awards ceremony.
Two teams finished with a close score:
First place came in at 55: Team Outback Deck
Second place came in at 58: Team Stewart!
The Closest to the Pin was awarded to Steve Hopson and Longest Drive was awarded by Chris Szemprich!
Another well attended, successful tournament in the books! We hope to add more sponsors next year and really raise some money for NADRA programs. NADRA’s 2015 Atlanta Golf Outing Brings Over 60 Industry Pros Together
From James Gunning, NADRA Atlanta Chapter President:
I am trilled to recap on Atlanta’s first NADRA golf outing that we had on Monday, June 15th at the Brookfield Country Club in Roswell Georgia. NADRA members showed their support despite the brutal 95-degree temperatures with 100% humidity, on a Monday during the busiest time of year…we still Had 60+ golfers attend what turned out to be a pretty competitive golfing journey.
Festivities began with a shot gun start at 1:00 in the afternoon (peak heat) – so what is the solution to proper hydration supply for the finest NADRA golfers? 20 cases of water and Powerade backed up with plenty of beer and booze of course! I want to give thanks our beverage cart sponsors PMC and Wolmanized Outdoor Wood, as well as all of our official golf outing sponsors:
Wolmanized Outdoor Wood
PMC Building Supply
Stock Building Supply
Screw Products, Inc.
Metro Building Products
Southeastern Underdeck Systems
Simpson Strong Tie
Guardian Building Products
Without the support of all our sponsors, local chapter members and the help from NADRA HQ – the Beaudry’s, we could not have pulled off such a fun and well-attended event.
NADRA National Board Member, and active Atlanta member, Heath Bowman said, “The golf outing was great. A lot of us don’t get to see each other outside of chapter meetings. It’s fun to catch up in a different setting and have a good time with friends in the industry. It also helps create awareness. NADRA does a lot for the industry, and many of the guests who played, got a chance to see the benefits of being involved with a group like ours. Obviously, networking is a huge part of it, and all of us work hard to stand out in a very competitive industry. But even more important are the friendships beyond the word. At the end of the day, the work we do is to add enjoyment in the lives of the people we work for. Events like the golf outings are a great reminder that we can have fun while we work hard.”
We finished the evening with a wonderful southern style buffet and awards ceremony.
The blistering weather apparently helped the golf scores heat up. Two teams finished with a score of 55:
After a scorecard playoff, Team Outback was given the winners trophy with Team Trex as runners up.
On Hole # 3 the closest to the pin award was given to Lamar Lea of Decksouth – 20” from the hole
On Hole #15 the closest to the pin award was given to Blake Buckler of PMC – 42” from the hole
On Hole #18 the long drive award was given to Ty Nowell of Universal Forest Products – 348 yds ( ouch! )
Several attendees told me that this golf outing was one of the best they have ever participated in; others (even the country club) could not believe that this was our first tournament. I was so pleased to hear that the common opinion was that the event was ran extremely well and I’ve got to say, we could not have done that without the help of John Lea and Mike reasons of Decksouth. John, thanks for letting us attend your club. It was fun and I am looking forward to the next one!
See you all August 18th at the Ivy in Bulkhead meeting start at 6:00!

Boston Cedar Hosts a Game Changing Event for its Northeast Independent Lumber and Building Materials Dealers
Boston Cedar recently launched its new decking, railing, and trim product line up at its “Game Changer” kickoff event held at the Omni Providence Hotel. With many of the leading northeast independent lumber and building materials dealers in attendance, Boston Cedar Chairman Rob Ankner got things started with an overview of the company and the reasoning behind its updated best-in-class product offering, while company President Joe Cusack emceed the event.
Dealer attendees and industry affiliates attentively listened to business presentations made by owners and key executives of Boston Cedar’s new supplier partners; RDI, KOMA Building Products and Trex Company.
Rob Ankner explained some of the reasoning behind the decision: “RDI, KOMA Building Products and Trex offer everything that Boston Cedar requires of our manufacturing partners: High integrity, financial strength, forward-thinking product innovations, and unbending focus on all aspects of exceptional customer service.” Ankner continued, “By distributing these game changing lines, Boston Cedar continues a near thirty-year tradition of offering best-in-class products, delivered with unrivaled customer service to our highly-valued independent LBM dealer partners throughout the Northeast.”
To quote one the hundreds of attendees: “The product presenters and video lead-ins for RDI, KOMA and Trex were top shelf and eye opening. The positive energy and enthusiasm generated by such a display of professionalism, historical perspective and product knowledge is the “juice” that keeps us all excited about cutting edge products and our place in bringing goods to builders and end users.”
Following the presentations, dealers had an opportunity to meet one-on-one with each of the new supplier partners and then enjoyed a cocktail reception with a real game changer; Boston Bruins legend and NHL Hall of Famer, Bobby Orr. The evening culminated with an elegant group dinner and an inspirational talk by Ed Cooley, current head coach of the Providence College men’s basketball team, who encouraged listeners to always strive to be great and never settle for good enough.
“I’m genuinely excited about the positive reaction by our loyal customer base to these game changing products and programs” stated Paul Colliton, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Boston Cedar.

“Trex, KOMA, and RDI offer everything that Boston Cedar looks for in our manufacturing partners: High integrity, forward-thinking innovations, and unbending focus on customer service,” said Rob Ankner, Boston Cedar’s Chairman. “By distributing these best-in-class product lines, Boston Cedar continues to build on a tradition of offering premium products, delivered with very reliable service to our affiliated independent LBM dealer locations throughout the Northeast. With this as our core mission and tradition, we welcome Trex, KOMA, and the expanded RDI line with open arms.”
We tried something different with our second meeting of the year by hosting the first “Speed Dating with Deck Builders” event at the Ivy in Buckhead. We had over 51 attendees at the meeting which included several first time visitors. I want to thank the following Deck Builder members that agreed to be at the host tables: David Tibbetts, Atlanta Decking, John Harper and Joel Harper with Leisure Time Decks, O.C. & Mary Kirk with Just Decks, Rick Goldstein and Chapin LaChance with the Mosaic Group, Mike Reasons and John Lea with DeckSouth, Frank Pologruto with Decks & More, John Paulin with Tailor Decks, Bryan Miller with OutBack Decks, and Steve Matrangos & Craig Dickerson with DeckSource.
Thanks you all so much for giving your time and giving this new idea a chance. We only have six meetings a year and this format opened up the opportunity for more of our great Vendors to get in front of the deck builder members. I would also like to thank the following Vendor members who bought “dates” for the event: Weyerhauser/ Cox, Tamko, Homeland Vinyl, Trex, Azek, Dixie Plywood, NyloBoard, MoistureShield, Fiberon and Universal Forest Products. We could not have a chapter without the ongoing support of so many members and I want to thank each of you for giving your resources to this meeting and to the chapter.
We had an opportunity to take care of normal business and to discuss forming a local code committee made up of Rick Goldstein, Steve Matrangos and Craig Dickerson. Rick and Steve both spoke to the formation of the committee and invited all members to contact them with ideas and specific topics they may want to cover. We also spoke about the National initiative for Code’s and to remind everyone to fill out the survey that is online and to contact Glenn Mathewson with any information prior to his going to the ICC meeting. We were also able to give away a number of door prizes to the contractor members because of donations from Tamko, Weyerhauser, Cox , Fiberon, Universal Forest Products, and Fortress.
Our next meeting will be held on June the 18th at the Ivey in Buckhead. Our sponsor for the meeting is Fastenmaster and we are currently looking for a guest speaker so please let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks again for being a part of our Chapter and for all that each of you do to make us successful.
Thanks to all who attended the NADRA Atlanta Chapter meeting this past Monday evening at the Ivy in Buckhead. We had 60+ attendees and many guests from the Principia Conference. I want to thank Larry Pease with Trex for sponsoring the meeting and for a great presentation. Our guest speaker was Ryan Magnon the Senior Manager, Hospitality and Service Design, Chick-Fil-A. Ryan gave us a great presentation and left us with some new ideas on how to brand our companies and provide superior customer service.
I had the opportunity to review the recent Deck Expo Show and highlighted many of the things that went on at show this year including our recent National meeting. Our own Bobby Parks is the new Vice president of the National Board so please congratulate him next time you see him and He can fill you in on any of the “happenings” with NADRA national. We had four Atlanta members that attended the Master Deck Certification classes; David Tibbetts (Atlanta Decking & Fence), Frank Pologruto (Decks & More), John Lea (DeckSouth), and Craig Jacks (Nyloboard). We also had several members that participated and won some of the National Deck Awards; John Paulin (Tailor Decks) won three awards, Rick Goldstein (Mosaic Group) won two awards, John Lea (DeckSouth) won two awards, and Frank Pologruto (Decks & More) won two awards. Congratulations to all of the winners and thanks to all who participated
Rich Phillips (Decks By Design) spoke to the group about a HomeAid Atlanta project that we are undertaking in the coming weeks in South Atlanta. HomeAid is nonprofit group that is affiliated with the Atlanta Home Builders association and they provide transitional housing for the homeless in Atlanta. We are beginning to coordinate some of our efforts with the Atlanta HBA and this is the second project that we will be working with them on. Please contact Rich or myself if you can help us with materials or labor.
Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday– December the 12th. This is our Big Year End Event and we are holding at Maggiano’s – Cumberland Mall location. Arch will be our sponsor and we are still working on our guest speaker. This is our time to look at the year past and to plan for the coming year – we need a big attendance so please put it on your calendars and note that Spouses are encouraged to attend. We will also be putting together a “Toys for Tots” drive at the meeting – details to follow. Thanks again to all the out of town guests that took their time to join us – we loved having you and hope you can join us again anytime you are able.
Respectfully Submitted Keith Compton / Chapter President
