What’s Next in Outdoor Living?

Top 10 Trends for 2020

WINCHESTER, Va. – The popularity of outdoor living spaces has never been higher, and the appeal of the great outdoors seems to keep getting greater with homeowners across the country investing more time and money into their outdoor spaces. As the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and railing, and leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products, Trex Company keeps a finger on the pulse of this rapidly growing industry. Based on input from internal experts and insights from dealers, contractors and industry insiders, the company has, once again, compiled its annual Outdoor Living Forecast predicting design trends for 2020 and beyond.

“It’s always fascinating to compare the trends reported by our customers with those projected by the industry at large,” notes Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing for Trex Company. “This year, we added insights from two high-profile design and lifestyle experts – Alison Victoria and Evette Rios – to the mix. Their perspectives helped to reinforce our predictions and take our forecast to a whole new level.”

Following are 10 trends that will influence outdoor living as we begin a new decade of design:

1.Mixed Materials

Say so long to matchy, matchy and monochromatic. 2020 is the year to mix it up – both indoors and out. Add visual interest to an outdoor space by juxtaposing materials such as concrete and composite, wicker and aluminum, copper and stone. Integrate nature-inspired materials that maintain cohesion with the natural surroundings, and infuse color and pattern with pillows, cushions, furnishings and decorative accents.

2.Industrial Inspiration

As homeowners increasingly find inspiration for their outdoor spaces in commercial settings, like upscale hotels and restaurants, there is a growing shift toward sleek, contemporary designs and materials, larger expanses of glass, smooth surfaces, and clean lines. Outdoors, this trend is manifesting in more commercially inspired railing styles. Trex Signature® Railing, for instance, features a range of minimalist, yet sturdy, aluminum options, including rod rail, glass panels and mesh inserts – designed to optimize sightlines and deliver a modern, industrial flair.

3.Cladding

Another commercial-to-residential trend is the use of cladding, which is growing in popularity across the country. Functionally, cladding provides a protective rainscreen to a home or outdoor living area, while also improving curb appeal. Modern exteriors with clean lines and simple designs are among those attributes most commonly requested by homebuyers and homeowners with a particular emphasis on wood looks. For those seeking the aesthetics of wood cladding without the hassles of constant upkeep, composite cladding offers a high-performance, low-maintenance alternative.

“Anyone who follows my work knows that I’m all about cladding. I’m also all about the ease and aesthetics of Trex composite boards,” says Victoria, host of HGTV’s ‘Windy City Rehab.’ “I use Trex for all of my cladding applications – and even have it on my own deck at home. It is fresh and distinctive and lends a modern interior aesthetic to an outdoor space.”

4.Outdoor Kitchens

As the foodie phenomenon continues to thrive, homeowners are increasingly making room – both in their budgets and floorplans – for outdoor kitchens. In recent years, outdoor cooking areas have evolved from stand-alone grills to fully appointed spaces with specialty appliances ranging from smokers and side burners to pizza ovens and integrated refrigerated storage. Capturing this trend is the new Trex® Outdoor Kitchens collection. The luxurious lineup features stainless steel cabinetry solutions in color and style options that allow designers and homeowners to create functional spaces that rival interior kitchens – all crafted to withstand and endure exposure to the elements.

5.Vertical Gardens

Among the biggest trends for 2020 is natural greenery. Installing a vertical garden or ‘living wall’ outside your home can give you plenty of extra space for growing your favorite plants while also serving as an attractive, artful addition to your deck. There are numerous plans, tips and tutorials available online for designing and building a vertical garden. For optimal structural support and aesthetics, Trex® Cladding is an ideal choice for these projects, delivering premium aesthetics with all the durability, low-maintenance and eco-friendly benefits of Trex decking.

6.Fire Features

The allure of flickering flames from an outdoor fire are hard to rival or resist, which is why fire features will continue to be ‘hot’ this season. Available in a variety of shapes, sizes and finishes, fire features add warmth, ambience and a touch of drama to any deck or patio. Fire pots, such as those in the new Trex® Outdoor Fire & Water collection, can be positioned almost anywhere to create a cozy gathering spot – or combined in a series to provide an ambient boundary for larger outdoor areas. For even greater visual impact, a fire table can serve as a focal point and elevate the luxury and comfort of an outdoor space. Whether a warm summer evening or a cold winter night, a fire feature can make it feel like it’s a good idea to be outside any time of the year.

7.Soothing Water

Few outdoor elements elicit the same reaction as a well-placed water feature. The soothing sound of trickling water conjures calm and can set a relaxed tone and atmosphere. It can also act as a charming focal point for a backyard and can tie together an entire landscape. In addition to distinctive fire elements, the new Trex® Outdoor Fire & Water collection features a range of water spillways and water bowls made of premium-grade copper and stainless steel, and expertly engineered to ensure smooth water flow and optimal aesthetics to add beauty and tranquility to any outdoor space.

8.Creative Privacy

Urban outdoor spaces and smaller yards will benefit from big imaginations and clever innovations in 2020. Inspired by home improvement TV and magazines, look for design-savvy, yet space-constrained, homeowners to employ inventive uses of screening, fencing, all-weather curtains, and lattice to maximize area and privacy in creative ways.

9.Bonus Space

If you have a raised deck, there is undoubtedly some open space underneath. While, historically, this space has been used for storage, the design trend for 2020 is to turn it into bonus living space by installing a deck drainage system. Designed to divert water away from a deck, systems such as Trex® RainEscape® create dry space beneath an elevated deck that can be outfitted with everything from furniture and accessories to lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and entertainment components. This deck feature allows homeowners to maximize their space and provides convenient cover from the sun and rain.

10.Year-Round Retreats

As outdoor living continues to gain popularity across all regions, homeowners are becoming more willing to invest in elements that will extend the use of their outdoor spaces past sunset and past the traditional outdoor living season. Deck lighting incorporated into railings, post caps and stairs can increase safety and ambience while also extending the time that homeowners can spend outdoors. Pergolas, patio umbrellas and misters offer respite and refreshment on hot, sunny days. When temperatures drop, heating features, cozy throws and protective screens can provide welcome warmth and allow for use and enjoyment of an outdoor space all year long.

TREX BRAND STRENGTH REINFORCED BY TWO HIGH-PROFILE INDUSTRY REPORTS

Decking Leader Sweeps Builder Brand Use Study and Tops Green Builder Media Brand Index

The composite decking category has never been more competitive, but there’s no question as to which brand industry professionals prefer most. Trex, the leading manufacturer of high-performance, wood-alternative decking and railing, surpassed all others in recent studies conducted by two of the industry’s leading media outlets.

For the third time, Trex swept Builder magazine’s annual Brand Use Study, outranking all other brands across every aspect measured in the composite/PVC category. Additionally, in an unprecedented 10-year streak, Trex has been named the “greenest” decking in the latest Green Builder Media Readers’ Choice Awards. The brand also received the best Brand Index score for the decking category – a new addition to the Green Builder program for 2020.

“All of this wonderful recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects the opinions and preferences of trade professionals and industry insiders who not only use our products but who influence the decisions of others,” said Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing for Trex. “For more than 25 years, we have built a strong reputation with the trade community by continually delivering on our brand promise of performance, innovation and aesthetics. We have worked hard to maintain that legacy and are extremely proud to be considered the brand of choice in this category that Trex invented.”

Trex Sweeps Builder Magazine Brand Use Study

Each year, the Builder Brand Use Study gauges the attitudes and preferences of U.S. builders, developers and contractors as they relate to products they recognize, use and trust most. More than 1,000 respondents participated in the latest survey. For the 13th consecutive year, Trex was ranked No. 1 by trade professionals for “brand familiarity,” “brand used in the past two years” and “brand used most.” The brand also earned the highest rating for “overall quality” in the latest study, marking the third time Trex has swept the entire composite/PVC category.

Among the factors influencing brand selection were product performance, warranty, product availability, ease of installation, product price, reputation, manufacturer/dealer relationships and product sustainability. According to the results of the 2020 study, Trex was cited by 88% of respondents as the brand with which they are most familiar. More than two-thirds (69%) indicated that they have used Trex decking over the past two years and nearly half (47%) cited Trex as the brand they specify and use most. In fact, Trex received more than twice the votes of its nearest competitor as the decking brand used most by trade professionals.

The results of the 2020 Builder Brand Use Study are highlighted in the April 2020 issue of Builder magazine and posted to the magazine’s website at builderonline.com.

Trex Tops Green Builder Media Brand Index and Named “Greenest Decking”

For the 10th consecutive year, Trex has been named the “greenest” decking in one of the industry’s most respected surveys – the Green Builder Media Readers’ Choice Awards. Trex is the only composite decking manufacturer to hold this title since the program began in 2009, underscoring the brand’s leadership and strong preference among eco-conscious architects, builders and contractors.

Additionally, Trex received the best score in the decking category in the new Green Builder Media Brand Index. Designed to evaluate brand position in the marketplace, the Brand Index integrates purchase preferences, brand sentiment and reader data merging macro market trends from COGNITION Smart Data with micro user-specific results from the long-running Readers’ Choice survey. Based on these combined factors, the award recognizes the most sustainable, innovative, highest performance brands across a wide spectrum of building product categories.

“The readers of Green Builder are progressive early adopters and influencers in their communities,” noted Adkins. “This recognition reinforces that our products and our company’s core values continue to resonate with those who understand the importance of environmentally conscious building.”

Built on green values, Trex offers eco-friendly decking and outdoor living products that endure – without leaving a lasting impact on the environment. The entire high-performance Trex decking portfolio – including Trex Transcend®, Trex Select® and Trex Enhance® – is manufactured from 95% recycled materials, making Trex a smart choice for environmentally conscious builders and homeowners. For more than 25 years, Trex decking has been made from a combination of reclaimed wood and polyethylene plastic film (recycled from industrial packaging as well as common household items such as grocery bags, newspaper sleeves and bubble wrap). In fact, Trex is one of the largest recyclers of plastic film in North America, repurposing more than 1.5 billion plastic bags each year in the making of its products.

Last year, this commitment to sustainability earned Trex recognition as an Eco Leader – the highest honor awarded by Green Builder Media, North America’s leading media group focused on green building and responsible growth.

The Green Builder Media Brand Index top brands and 2020 Readers’ Choice selections are showcased in the March/April issue of Green Builder magazine and online at GreenBuilderMedia.com

TREX BRINGS SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS TO HGTV® SMART HOME 2020

Eco-friendly, Low-maintenance Products Create Exquisite Outdoor Living Spaces

WINCHESTER, Va., April 2, 2020 – From the Steel City to a modern city with green spaces, sustainable buildings and vibrant innovation, Pittsburgh offers an ideal location for the HGTV® Smart Home 2020. This year’s home is a natural fit for the city with its industrial aesthetic, neutral finishes and strategically simplistic styling by HGTV designer Tiffany Brooks. With smart living in mind, the home features eco-friendly features both inside and out, including an enviable outdoor living area created with sustainable, low-maintenance products from Trex Company, the world’s leading brand of high-performance, wood-alternative decking and railing.

“This year’s HGTV Smart Home offers an ideal showcase for our extensive portfolio of high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products,” noted Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing for Trex. “From the decking, railing and lighting to the finishing touches like a pergola, lattice and under-deck drainage, Trex offers homeowners everything they might need to create outdoor spaces that are smart, stylish and sustainable.”

The HGTVSmart Home 2020 is cleverly constructed with advanced technology, gadgets and smart solutions to enhance entertaining and everyday living. The one-of-a-kind home features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two half baths, a three-car garage and a luxurious yard outfitted with a two-story Trex deck and other best-in-class products from the company’s industry-leading portfolio of eco-friendly, low-maintenance outdoor living products.

Decking with Unparalleled Beauty and Performance

Trex Transcend® decking in Island Mist sets the stage for the luxurious outdoor spaces. The top-of-the-line Transcend composite deck boards pair a natural wood-grain pattern with rich color and realistic streaking that delivers the look of wood without the hassles of burdensome maintenance. Like all Trex decking, Transcend brings style that can withstand any weather Mother Nature sends its way and is designed to resist fading, staining, scratching and mold. Unlike wood, it won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter, and it requires no sanding, staining or painting. Food and drink spills can be easily cleaned up and an occasional soap-and-water cleaning is all that’s needed to retain a like-new appearance.

Adding to its appeal, the entire high-performance Trex decking portfolio is manufactured from 95% recycled material, making Trex a smart choice for environmentally conscious homeowners.

Railing that Delivers Sophisticated Safety

Trex Transcend® Railing is installed on the second story of the deck, adding both safety and style. Sleek black balusters contrast with Classic White posts and rails to create a distinctive design that complements the home’s modern aesthetic. Boasting unparalleled durability, Transcend Railing won’t rot, warp, peel or splinter and never needs to be sanded, painted or stained – meaning minimal maintenance and long-lasting beauty. Furthermore, Transcend Railing contains a minimum of 40% recycled material and is backed by a 25-year Limited Residential Warranty.

Inspired Illumination

Bringing another green element to the outdoor space are recessed deck lights and stair riser lights from the Trex Deck® Lighting collection. Featuring long-life, low-voltage LEDs from CREE®, the worldwide leader in energy-efficient lighting, the chic, weather resistant deck lights use 75% less energy and are cool to the touch, making them safe for children and pets. The “plug-and-play” components are easy to install on both existing and new decks to enhance the safety and style of any outdoor space.

Ultimate Shade and Style

Just steps away from the Smart Home deck, a sleek white Trex® Pergola Element provides shade and additional space for relaxing or entertaining. The sturdy, low-maintenance, all-aluminum structure features a contemporary design and is accented with column-mounted LED lights for added ambience.

Lovely Lattice

Trex® LatticeWorks is used to conceal a cleverly disguised storage area under the outdoor staircase. Made from durable, lightweight PVC, Trex LatticeWorks is weather-resistant, UV-protected and cleans easily. Nine Trex-exclusive designs ranging from romantic to deco are offered in white or black.

Elevated Protection

To optimize the space below the two-story deck, a Trex RainEscape® under-deck drainage system was installed. This above-the-joist system uses a network of troughs and gutters to divert rain, snow and moisture away from a deck to create useable dry space underneath. Once protected, the space can be outfitted with electricity, water and gas lines, as well as furniture, lighting, ceiling fans and entertainment components. The system also helps to protect wooden substructures from water damage that can lead to rot and decay.

“This year’s Smart Home showcases not only the breadth of outdoor living products available from Trex but also how seamlessly they work together,” noted Adkins. “Tiffany and the team from HGTV have done an incredible job creating a home that is not only sustainable and smart but also extremely livable. We are pleased to be part of this inspirational project again this year and can’t wait to find out who wins it.”

Manufacturers Share Highlights from 2020 International Builders Show

A letter from NADRA’s President, Matt Breyer:

This year’s International Builder’s Show was again held in Las Vegas, and like always it is almost impossible to absorb it entirely! It’s a very well-run event, but the sheer size and scope of what you are immersed in can be daunting.

Part of what I attempt to do is visit with as many of our NADRA members as possible while walking the show. However, due to the 80-100,000+ people walking the show with me, this means I’m not able to physically talk with our members- as there’s a crowd in their booth ahead of me!

It’s been encouraging to see the growth and development with our members- and with the industry segment at large at this show. At the moment they haven’t sectioned us off into our own “wing”, but there is no doubt that the “outdoor living” category is well represented at IBS.
Something else I attempt to do at this show is simply walk through as much of it as possible, looking for design inspiration, subtle market trends, and clues for where consumer preferences are headed. Rest assured, if there’s a kitchen cabinet feature consumers want inside, at some point that’s a detail they will be asking about outside with the grilling station, and I’d like to be informed enough to have that conversation!

Something else I’ve grown to love about shows like this, is the excuse for some “reflection time” away from the “daily grind” back at home/office. Vegas isn’t exactly known for it’s “quiet spaces”, but the dramatically different environment does provide an opportunity to disrupt daily routines, and some personal reflection- and that (at least for me) is extremely rejuvenating!

It looks like we’re headed into another strong year. There’s good pent-up consumer demand, a great overall economy, and we’ve got some of the best materials available to use as we seek to exceed our client’s expectations yet again. Here’s to an AWESOME 2020!

We hope to see you throughout the year at various NADRA events and shows. Please stay in touch! If you’d like to send us photos and a brief recap from your experience at the International Builder’s Show, please send images, links and comments to Info@NADRA.org. We will keep the blog updated with posts from our members!

At your service,
Matt Breyer

We invite you to scroll through the photos & comments from NADRA members that participated & exhibited at the International Builder’s Show last week in Las Vegas:

Screw Products, Inc.:

We had a wonderful time at the International Builders Show this year in Las Vegas. The people who came to our booth were from a good mixture of states, a wide variety of visitors from lumberyards to designers, to contractors, and all were very interested in our new and improved line of Gen II fasteners. We had quality time to explain our Horizon Curve Head and its slight curvature of the head that make for for elegant, professional results. The Finish Ring underneath the head that provides a better finish by cutting the top fibers in the wood for an extra step in countersinking, our Turbine Ribs that cut quickly into the wood, leaving a professional, clean finish with maximum wood contact, our Twin Blade Knurls that cuts fast to dramatically reduce friction and heat on the shank, while reducing load on the drill and we talked about our Fast Start Tip sharp threads all the way to the tip and how the fastener has an immediate grip for a fast start. The inset thread cut drastically reduces splitting effect and minimizes the driving torque needed to engage the wood.

We introduced our new lines at the show that included AXIS™ Structural Wood Screws, EPIC™ Trim Head Screws, PICO™ Finish Head Screws, AURA™ for Cabinetry & More, NOVA™ Structural Lag Screws, YUKON™ Hex Structural Lags and ROCO™.

We were also able to show our new Planograms available to the retail lumberyard, home center and hardware store. Learn more at ScrewProducts.com.

TimberTech:

The 2020 IBS AZEK TimberTech booth was a labor of love with the joint efforts of Minnesota Platinum Contractors Phi Decks and Deck and Basement partnering on the deck build.  The 50×80 deck featured all of the colors in the Legacy and Vintage collections as well as the four colors in the new Reserve Collection. Learn more at: TimberTech.com

NADRA Members, AGS Stainless:

At IBS this year, AGS Stainless released its newest stainless steel railing system, Cascadia Rail.

Cascadia Rail was designed to provide deck builders with a visually-stunning and cost-effective stainless alternative to aluminum railing systems.

Made from 316 marine-grade stainless steel and fabricated to AGS Stainless’ exacting standards, the lineal foot cost of Cascadia is similar to aluminum rail.

Cascadia is easy to install, ships within 48-hours and is is currently the only ICC-ES approved metal railing system with a horizontal infill. This means Cascadia can be installed quickly,  anywhere in the US and Canada, by just about anyone – and without the need for the engineering calculations typically required by local permitting authorities for custom stainless rails.

For additional info or to order Cascadia for your next project, go to: AGSStainless.com

NADRA Members, Versatex:

IBS 2020 in Las Vegas was an incredible time. We had a blast showcasing our products at IBS with new color offerings with our Canvas Series. The best part about the show was conversing with industry professionals all week and learning about their work. This is definitely a show that should not be missed! Plenty of innovative products come up each year and we are lucky to have such great support from the industry. Learn more at Versatex.com

NADRA Members, Armadillo:

Avon Plastics was at the International Builders’ Show (IBS) last week, showing builders how to cut deck installation time by up to 60% just by using TurboClip Hidden Deck fasteners. That’s precious time you can spend elsewhere.

Avon Plastics booth featured all of our building material brands from Armadillo Composite Decking, Grid Axcents Decorative Lattice, TurboClip Universal Hidden Deck Clip and Quix Tile.

We think our Builder Rebate Program is the best in the industry! We had a great response by getting people signed up for the builder rebate program right at the show when they visited our booth.  When you use our brands, we’ll rebate you 3% of your material cost on all Armadillo, TurboClip, and Grid Axcents products. Plus, our Armadillo and TurboClip builders will receive two 192ct boxes of Narrow Gap TurboClip fasteners (enough to install 200sf) simply for signing up! Sign up today at pro.avonplastics.com.  All in all, it was an awesome show!

NADRA Members, MoistureShield:

MoistureShield® made a huge splash with its new booth at the 2020 IBS Show, right on the heels of winning “Marketer of Year” –the highest honor in Hanley-Wood’s Brand Builder Awards.  The winning campaign was highlighted in the booth, with captivating images of underwater scenes on their extremely moisture-resistant composite decking. MoistureShield was also submerged in an actual water fountain and pool, something no other decking would dare to promote!

MoistureShield’s Elevate™ capped wood composite decking, initially offered in select locations in 2019, has now launched nationally at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas. Contractor and lumber dealer interest in Elevate is growing rapidly, as they recognize the need for an attractive capped decking product at an entry-level price point. Elevate decking features a strong, protective cap which shields each board from impact, corrosion and harsh weather.

In addition, Elevate was Finalist in the NAHB’s Most Innovative Products in the Best of the IBS Awards.  MoistureShield also hosted designer and former HGTV host Chip Wade, as he explored the brand’s Solid Core Difference which makes all MoistureShield decking products moisture-resistant enough to be submersible in water.  He also did the “Feel the Difference” comparison the CoolDeck technology, in which you can actually feel the surface temperature difference in CoolDeck compared to other decking brands. And, Chip did a Facebook Live on how seamlessly MoistureShield complements Belgard® Pavers, firepit and outdoor kitchen for a complete backyard experience.  Learn more about Elevate HERE

NADRA Members, Regal ideas:

Award winning deck builder, Dr Decks, and co-host of the Vanilla Ice Project Wes Kain joined us in the Regal Ideas booth at the International Builder’s Show. It was great meeting so many new contractors. Regal ideas products raise the bar when it comes to safety and durability. Our products are made from high strength 100% pure aluminum alloys and engineered to resist the tests of time and weather and proven to outperform vinyl, composite, wood and steel materials.

We showcased our TELESTEPS, a must have item for every contractor, builder and renovator! Here is a special offer to our fellow NADRA members!  Use code TELE10 on telestepsworldwide.com for 10% off the entire store plus FREE shipping!

It was a great show! We look forward to seeing you soon! Check out our DeckStars site to see where we will be on tour next!

NADRA Members, CAMO® Deck Fastening Systems:

The CAMO booth had an excellent turnout with quality conversations with both new and familiar faces. Every 15 minutes, attendees watched product demos, learning more about CAMO® DRIVE™, EdgeClips and EdgeXClips. Builders were able to try out the products themselves and hundreds entered to win a DRIVE while 15 walked away with a new tool!

The CAMO DRIVE™ Stand-Up Tool features three end guides to fasten CAMO Edge Screws, CAMO EdgeClips or traditional face screws—all using your own drill! CAMO DRIVE is a collated stand-up deck fastening tool designed to save contractors time, get them off their knees, and save their backs. Using the CAMO DRIVE tool can result in a deck installation that is 5X faster than other methods.  And, CAMO® EdgeClip® and EdgeXClip® revolutionize installation of grooved boards, either using CAMO DRIVE or their Never Miss Guide™ for hand-held fastening. Stay tuned for more innovation as warm weather approaches!

CAMO was a Day 2 Product Find at IBS by BUILDER Magazine!

NADRA Members, Feeney, Inc.:

The International Builders’ Show was a fantastic way to reconnect with our reps, dealers, and contractors. This year we debuted our brand new faux wood grain finish top rails for our DesignRail® aluminum railing system. Even our own reps were fooled into thinking it was wood! Our reps were also excited by our new DesignRail® Express program, cutting shipping down on select options to 5-7 days.

Besides the new products, we connected with editors at LBM Journal and Professional Remodeler magazine, and had delightful visits with Chip Wade and Mike Holmes Jr., and  attended the #bestofsocialmedia awards which highlighted some fantastic contractors on social. Learn more at FeeneyInc.com

NADRA Members, FastenMaster:

This year was FastenMaster’s biggest showing ever at the IBS in Las Vegas.  New to our booth was an interactive framing corner which showed off the FrameFAST tool and all-new NLB Connector.  The FrameFAST system has now expanded from its original configuration which made truss-to-top plate connections easier.  It can now create a continuous load path from the truss down to the foundation using the same 6” FrameFAST screw by utilizing different tool heads.  The new NLB, or Non Load-Bearing Connector, combines a screw with floating sleeve for attaching partition walls – delivering lateral stability while allowing for truss movement above the wall.

Over the three days of this show, our knowledgeable sales, marketing and technical teams engaged with many Pro customers, giving constant demonstrations and answering a variety of product application questions.  For our decking Pros, these demos included our FusionLOC demo deck, showing how to install faster by having collated clips and fasteners in one tool.

Another time-saving product enhancement was our new collated Cortex plugs, allowing the decking contractor to more quickly and precisely align the grain and color of our plugs to match the decking.  No doubt that the few thousand attendees who walked through our booth left with new knowledge of our time and money saving products, and a better sense of why FastenMaster remains Pro Driven. Learn more at FastenMaster.com.

Trex Dream Deck for 2019 HGTV Dream Home

WINCHESTER, Va., Dec. 07, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — A resort town where the mountains meet the sky, Whitefish, Montana is an oasis for outdoor enthusiasts, offering year-round activities and breathtaking vistas. This idyllic mountain escape provides the perfect setting for the HGTV® Dream Home 2019. Perched on a mountainside, the home features many highlights, including spectacular views of the Rocky Mountains and Whitefish Lake – all from the luxury and comfort of an impressive outdoor space outfitted with high-performance, low-maintenance Trex decking, railing, deck lighting and accessories.

The world’s number one decking and railing brand, and leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products, is well represented in the showcase home, which features Trex Transcend® Decking from the newly updated Earth Tones collection, Trex® Signature™ Rod Rail, the Trex Hideaway® Hidden Fastening SystemTrex® Fascia and Trex® DeckLighting™.

“We are thrilled to, once again, be part of the HGTV Dream Home,” said Leslie Adkins, vice president of marketing for Trex Company. “This year’s setting, with its amazing mountain views, makes the outdoor space a main focal point of the home, and the evolved aesthetics of our refreshed Trex Transcend Earth Tones decking offers the perfect complement. The warm brown and realistic wood-grain pattern of our Vintage Lantern deck boards blends perfectly with the surrounding scenery while bringing a feeling of luxury and low-maintenance leisure to the mountain retreat.”

Upgraded Decking Brings Elevated Aesthetics and PerformanceThe updated line of Trex Transcend Earth Tones decking introduces a more natural, refined grain pattern, while still delivering the highest level of performance. Unlike wood, it resists fading, staining, scratching and mold – and won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter. Transcend also is the most scratch-resistant, scuff-resistant and durable decking collection from Trex. Upkeep is hassle-free with no sanding, staining or painting required, and food and drink spills wash off with just soap and water – making it easier to clean. While the grain pattern is new, the Earth Tone boards are offered in the same nature-inspired color palette that homeowners know and love: Vintage Lantern, Tree House, Fire Pit, Gravel Path and Rope Swing.

In addition to enhanced aesthetics and durability, Trex Transcend offers unparalleled design flexibility. It can be bent for dramatic curves and also can be used to create cocktail railing, integrated benches, planter boxes and other coordinated accessories. Further, it is manufactured from more than 95 percent recycled content, making it an ideal choice for today’s eco-conscious homeowners.

Railing as Spectacular as the Views Trex® Signature™ Rod Rail was chosen to bring a modern, minimalist look to the deck while also accentuating the stunning surroundings. The clean, horizontal lines deliver a sleek, sophisticated aesthetic with the superior strength of aluminum for stability and safety. The Charcoal Black finish virtually disappears into the background, creating the effect of unobstructed views. Durable powder-coating ensures the railing will retain its color, resist corrosion and be ultra-easy to clean and maintain.

Finishing Touches for Ultimate Outdoor Living Adding to the appeal and safety of the Dream Home’s outdoor space, the deck was installed using the Trex Hideaway Hidden Fastening System. Fasteners are installed discretely between the deck boards leaving the surface free from visible nails and screws. The resulting surface is smooth, hardware-free and barefoot friendly.

Other finishing touches include Trex Fascia in Vintage Lantern to match the decking, along with integrated Trex DeckLighting, including post cap and stair riser lights, for enhanced safety and ambience. When not in use, the lighting components are designed to blend in with the decking and railing for a clean, unfettered look. In addition, the energy-efficient, low-voltage lights are extremely durable and weather-proof – illuminating the outdoor space for extended enjoyment long after the sun goes down.

Trex Unveils Top Trends in Outdoor Living for 2018

Trex Unveils Top Trends in Outdoor Living for 2018
www.trex.com
Desire for Personalization and Year-Round Enjoyment; Ushers In New Approaches to Design and Materials.

With the popularity of outdoor living expected to hit its highest peak yet this year*, homeowners across the country will be going all-in for the outdoors in 2018.

Once again, Trex Company, the world’s #1 brand of premium decking and railing, has gleaned insights from contractors, homeowners and industry experts to compile its annual outdoor living forecast.

“Among the biggest trends we are seeing is a shift away from seasonality as consumers adopt more of a year-round mindset regarding their outdoor spaces,” said Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex Company.

“Outdoor living is no longer restricted to spring and summer nor reserved for certain parts of the country. Thanks to new high-performance materials and innovative design approaches, homeowners everywhere are transforming their outdoor spaces into multi-seasonal extensions of their homes.”

Following are some of the other top trends that will be dominating the outdoor living landscape in 2018:

Minimal Maintenance, Maximum Enjoyment

Just because people are spending more time outdoors doesn’t mean they’re willing to put in extra hours for care and maintenance. In fact, high-maintenance materials, such as wood, are seeing a decrease in demand as people are opting for lower-maintenance offerings that deliver better performance and sustainability.

Wood alternatives, particularly composite decking, are expected to experience above average annual gains in demand through 2020. Analysts predict this segment of the decking industry will grow at a faster rate than traditional wood** – and for good reason.

Unlike wood, high-performance composites, such as Trex, resist fading, staining, scratching and mold – and won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter.

No sanding, staining or painting is required, and food and drink spills wash off easily with just soap and water. Additionally, Trex decking is made from 95 percent recycled material, making it an environmentally friendly choice for eco-conscious consumers.

Comfy Cozy

Among the hottest design influences right now is “hygge” (pronounced hoo-gah) – the Scandinavian term for a feeling of coziness and comfort. This season, outdoor spaces will beckon homeowners and their guests to relax and rejuvenate with hygge-inspired accents, from plush cushions and throws to protective pergolas and cozy warming features.

Trex contractors also have reported an uptick in requests for its RainEscape® deck drainage system by clients looking to add multi-seasonal living space underneath an elevated deck.

Residential Goes Commercial

With the heightened focus on creating “outdoor rooms,” railing is finally getting the attention it deserves as homeowners recognize its role as not only the functional frame of their space but also one of the most visually prominent design elements.

While railing matched to the decking remains perennially popular, an increasing number of homeowners are taking advantage of the complementary decking and railing pairings afforded by new railing materials in modern, metal finishes, as well as sleek designs inspired by commercial architecture.

“Our contractors are seeing more homeowners being inspired by outdoor spaces they find in commercial settings, such as hotels and urban rooftops, and wanting to replicate those looks in their homes,” noted Zambanini.

A prime example of this commercial-to-residential trend is the growing popularity of horizontal railings such as rod rail – a sleek, sturdy look that’s ideal for customers who like the view-optimizing aspects of cable railing, but with a modern, industrial touch.

Hide & Chic

With the increased usage of outdoor living spaces comes higher demand for chic storage options and privacy.

“Nothing can dampen the view of a gorgeous sunset or the enjoyment of an elegant al fresco gathering quite like unsightly plastic storage, trash bins or scattered tools, lawn equipment and toys cluttering the scene,” Zambanini said. “Today’s homeowners are interested in both function and design, with solutions that add ambiance rather than detract from it.”

Adding beauty to any outdoor space, lattice panels are perfect for enhancing privacy and concealing storage areas or unsightly views.

With styles ranging from romantic to deco, lattice panels can easily be integrated into both new and existing outdoor living spaces and applied to structures such as arbors, trellises and gazebos, or used as decorative wainscoting or deck skirting. It’s a clever – and easy – design trick that adds both personal style and functionality to any outdoor living space.

Customized outdoor cabinetry and storage solutions also are available in designs that integrate seamlessly with popular decking finishes. These functional and fashionable components include built-in trash bins and ice chests, as well as sink cabinets and grill bases to hide plumbing and gas hook-ups for a completely finished look.

Fun & Games

Kids are not the only ones who enjoy playing outside! Outdoor play spaces for all ages are on the rise, including everything from swimming pools and embedded sandboxes to regulation cornhole courts, horseshoe pits and dedicated spaces for volleyball, badminton and bocce ball.

Beyond yard games, outdoor entertainment has reached a whole new level thanks to advancements in both equipment and equipment storage. Electronics manufacturers now offer televisions and entertainment systems specifically designed for the outdoors, taking into consideration differences in lighting and outdoor acoustics.

Meanwhile, new storage options include durable wall-mounted television and entertainment centers that beautifully protect pricey electronics from the elements, while concealing all of the unsightly – and potentially unsafe – cords and cables.

Trex Commercial Products Debuts Custom Railing Solutions at IBS

PRESS RELEASE

“From stadiums and large public works to universities and hospitals, no two commercial projects are alike – and their railing systems shouldn’t be either,” noted John Lewis, president and CEO of Trex Commercial Products. “Instead, Trex Commercial Products takes an individualized approach by designing, engineering and manufacturing custom railing solutions tailored to each specific project.”

Trex Commercial Products will showcase several of these solutions within the Trex Company booth (#W3440) at this year’s show, including:

  • Tensiline Cable Rail – A popular look at stadiums and other settings where sightlines are paramount, TCP’s Tensiline Cable Rail system is designed and constructed using stainless steel cables and a selection of stainless steel fittings and turnbuckles. The use of stainless steel cable allows for minimal sightline obstruction, while a variety of materials, finishes and colors are available to create the desired look for any project.
  • Gridguard™ Rail – An industrial look that offers strength and security, TCP’s Gridguard™ Perforated Rail and Mesh Rail systems are available in a variety of wire mesh panels and other infill materials, with flexible mounting methods that allow for use in nearly any location. A variety of materials, finishes, colors and infill attachment styles are available to meet specific facility requirements.
  • Line Rail – A sleek, contemporary style that offers the luxurious look of glass infill, the Line series is characterized by the clean, modern rod style standoff and glass mount. Builders can choose between top rail and handrail options, determine top-mount or fascia-mount surface attachment, and specify infill glass material, thickness and orientation for complete customization.
  • Track Rail – A popular interior look, Track Rail with glass infill provides a bright, airy atmosphere to any setting. The beauty lies in its subtlety, as the system is designed and constructed without the use of vertical balusters or posts between glass infill panels for high visibility throughout the space. The Track Rail system can be customized with multiple cladding options and glass types, including tempered, laminated, low iron, fritted, PVB interlayer, SGP interlayer, colored interlayer and patterned interlayer.
  • Dot Rail – The most distinguishable feature of the Dot Rail series is its unobtrusive circular glass mounts attached to TCP’s trapezoidal posts. Both handrail and top rail choices have three distinct rail standoff options creating more design flexibility – a rectangular base plate side mount for a clean mounting solution, a node-style side mount for a minimalistic installation look and an oval side mount base plate for a more linear, compact look.

“The Trex Commercial Products team has supplied railing for some of the largest projects in the country, and this wealth of experience provides us with the ability and expertise to achieve unrivaled customization and customer service,” said James E. Cline, president and CEO of Trex Company. “Through Trex Commercial Products, we aim to expand the relationship with builders and architects across the category. We’re thrilled to make our debut with such a strong line-up of core products that lay the foundation for future innovation within the commercial railing industry.”

NADRA Sporting Clay Tournament, a Success!

NADRA’s very first sporting clay event on June 29th in Coplay, PA did not disappoint! Although we are all slammed this time of year, we gathered together to blow off some steam with a little gun powder.  The gathering began with a few words from our main sponsors, Wolf Home Products and Sequoia Supply. This was followed with an inspiring rules and regulations overview from safety management. From pointers like, “don’t take selfies behind the line of fire” to “although it might be tempting, no shooting live game”. Lehigh Valley Sporting Clays did an outstanding job not only ensuring the safety of our group, but entertaining as well.

The course included 16 stations of side flying, sky high, jumping clay pigeons on 64 beautiful acres of an old quarry.  The course was challenging, yet fun and the camaraderie was immeasurable. Here’s what a our members had to say:

“The NADRA event at Lehigh Valley Sporting Clay’s was absolutely PHENOMENAL! What a great event, but even more so- what great attendees! Thank you NADRA for hosting something unforgettable- I cannot wait to go back next time!”

– New Member, Tayler Young, The Falcon Group

“It was a blast!  What’s better than driving around shooting guns! Wait.. Driving around shooting guns with old friends and making new ones! That’s even better. It was a great team building exercise for me and my guys and we got to share war stories about the day as well as talk about how business was rolling out this season in our NADRA region with some of the top talent in the country.  It was a great day all around. I want to thank everyone at NADRA HQ again for putting it together. Count us in for next year!”

– Builder member, Sean McAleer, DeckRemodelers.com, LLC

The day concluded with prizes for the top foursome and best shooter. Matt Breyer and Ryan Lebron, from Breyer Landscape and Construction, LLC, along with Allen Homan and Joe Dandria from Perma Column East, LLC took first place in highest scored foursome. Stan Hathorn from Royal Building Products took first place for overall highest shooter. Well done! The event was a great success and we look forward to doing it again.

Thanks to all who came out, as well as our sponsors: Wolf Home Products, Sequoia Supply, Trex Company, Inc, and Perma Column East, LLC!
